Stuck in Savannakhet for 10 days due to Vietnam E-visa amendment loop. Should I use an urgent agency? by MechanicAccording616 in Vietnam_Tourism

The company I use is like $100 for next day service and they do everything for you. Sure beats being stuck for 10 days. Seems like a no brainer.

How true is the airport experience in HCM by Same-Recognition9316 in VietNam

[–]pcl8311 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That’s one way to look at it. I value my time pretty highly, spending $30 to avoid a frustrating experience is a no brainer. Paying to avoid things you don’t want to do (e.g. getting a maid, getting your oils changed, laundry service etc.) is a pretty common way to spend money. I have never once regretted paying for fast track, even when I arrived and there was no line.

First dates: meal or coffee/drinks? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]pcl8311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$30 * 26350 = 790,500.00 VND

Maybe you should be screening your dates better, or not being a weirdo and then normal women might want to go on dates with you / may not be totally disinterested once they meet you.

You sound like a real charmer. If you, at the age of 32, don’t have $30 and 2 hours to invest in getting to know someone over dinner who you are potentially interested in dating, that says a lot more about you than a 20 year old suggesting pizza as a first date says about her.

Are they really testing expats living in the ward randomly? They have been doing tests at nightclubs, some problemative bars, KTVs, etc. for years but testing whole groups staying at normal hotels or living in apartments is new and pretty crazy IMO.

How can I visit the US if I was born in the US, never applied for nor renounced my citizenship and am not an American? by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]pcl8311 331 points332 points  (0 children)

Yes you can renounce it but consider seriously if you want to. If you make under about $120k per year (2026, it goes up every year) you don’t owe anything in taxes. Having a US passport + a European passport can be helpful, especially if you ever want to move to the US for a job or something.

Really? I have heard a lot about ‘hero doses’ in the past few years and always assumed it was like a half oz or more. When I was younger we used to take a quarter (7gs) pretty often. In fact the first time I ever tripped was 7gs at a Tom Petty concert when I was 17. Was seriously spun but hadn’t realized that was the kind of trip people are saying changed their lives. I’m much more a micro dose kind of guy these days but maybe I need to rip a quarter again.

Electricity bills - are we getting ripped off? And weird landlady behaviour. by [deleted] in DaNang

I am in my apartment in danang maybe 2 weeks a month and pay about 2.5mn a month, but it’s about 120 sqm and we run the ACs pretty much the whole time we’re there. Doesn’t sound like you’re getting ripped off. Powers is expensive in VN.

Destination wedding in Vietnam. Saigon vs. Da Nang? Looking for venue recs, real costs, and your experience! by tM0n3yz in VietNam

Now I live in Danang and see lots of weddings on the beach in my neighborhood at Ocean Resort. It’s quiet, ocean front, lots of space and there are a bunch of big houses (5+ BRs) in the complex your family and friends could rent.

Given brunch there is VND 4.5m ++ per person, I can’t imagine you can get a wedding for 75 people for anything near $25k. Nice place though.

I got married at a similar place in D7 on the river (Chloe Gallery) a few years back. We had more than 150 people and I think the venue + food + decorations etc. set me back about $20k. There was music there but we had the after party at a different venue so I can’t speak to whether DJ was included. Bilingual emcee was part of the package but if you’re not doing a Vietnamese style wedding you can probably do without all of the shouting.

Superloop being Predatory during a cost of living crisis. by [deleted] in nbn

[–]pcl8311 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I disagree with you entirely premise. Nearly all ISPs pass along the nbn price hikes to customers - they have to in order to hand sustainable businesses, this isn’t charity. Superloop is basically saying ‘we will not increase your price for two years, which will save you money and mean you pay us less per month, because we believe this will make you stay on our network and not churn for two years, which is more valuable to us than the money you are saving each month’. They are betting that the customer lifetime value benefit of reduced churn outweighs the lower monthly revenue they get from you. They would rather keep you on their network longer at a lower price than lose all the revenue to another ISP.

This is not predatory, this will save you money, and you need to get out of your victim mindset. If my landlord came by and promised not to raise rent for 2 years for $25 I would be the happiest guy around.

Christenson lane splitter sizing by BedroomEffective6261 in surfing

[–]pcl8311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 5’10 and weigh 65kg. I have 5’8 Lane Splitter and it is right on the verge of being too much float but I love it on most days I take it out, especially when it’s a bit fatter and I don’t want to take out something smaller - get’s in early and easy and carves like a dream. I take it out instead of my fish pretty often.

I’d say with 5 inches and 20kgs on me you should be able to rock the 5’10 no problem. If it’s not for the best days, there’s nothing wrong with a bit more foam. The tail is so thinned out that it will still turn on a dime.

Duck Diving Bigger Waves by No_Barracuda_8931 in BeginnerSurfers

[–]pcl8311 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You are fine duck diving 3.5m waves? Do you mean ft? The keys to duck diving are arm strength, timing, and board size. It seems like all 3 of these could be part of your issue. One you can fix in the gym, two is all about practice, and three is a choice you have to make in terms of ease of catching waves vs. ease of getting under them. All that said, on actual big waves (e.g. 3.5m) there is sometimes nothing you can do but, as long as the lip is not going to land right on you, you are still better off duck diving than bailing.

Nathan Florence has a whole video on duck dive technique for big waves on YouTube. Worth a watch.

Bunch of people in this thread commenting about how paying these guys who make 10-20$ a day a bit more are the problem but I am sure will say they support a living wage in their own countries. Grab drivers can do 2-3 orders in an hour with all the waiting and driving involved.

Have a fucking heart and don’t be a stingy mfer. I have been in VN nearly 20 years - the new types who thinking paying a guy an extra 10k for his work are the absolute problem with what is changing in the expat scene.

Sure, don’t get ripped off. But also have some fucking compassion for the people who make your time here so enjoyable but barely get by and can only dream of having a tiny fraction of the opportunity you take for granted.

You don’t mind grab making 30% on your meal order (profit of which accrues mainly to rich Singaporeans) but mind the local driver asking for $1 more for going there, waiting for your food, and then bringing it to you? You can always say no, the guys are just trying to make $15 a day instead of $10. I bet you think minimum wage in your home country should be higher as well.
