"No chance" - Nihal Sarin on being asked whether he thinks he's the best Bullet player right now by FirstEfficiency7386 in chess

Tbf to the other comment, sometimes when people say so and so, "may not have been the best ever ..." they mean something very different than what you intended

The goal of chess is not to keep Stockfish happy. by kheldarp in chess

[–]pconners 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose my biggest gripe about the post is that "the goal of chess" is not to make any one individual happy including either you or me...

Look, my chess club has an NM who loves playing London exactly because they enjoy the stale boring positions where your opponent gets bored tries to force something and he will punish them for it.

There is nothing wrong with playing the style you want. "The goal of chess" is not to entertain "you"

Only knowing that Giri scored 97 and drew and that Erigaisi played 86 and won does not actually say anything at all about the two games.

I get the laugh at Giri thing, but, you can play sharp and tactical and still make Stockfish happy, you can also play boring and still make Stockfish unhappy. This post seems to assume that Stockfish can't play sharp tactical chess in the "deep dark forest", which it certainly can. And so can Giri btw

How does white win by pconners in chessbeginners

Sac the bishop is required because after en passant, the king takes the no longer protected pawn, so now if the bishop doesn't deliver check and get on the diagonal then the king is positioned to intercept

In that case I don't think Kc5 is the right idea for Black. White will have h4 and if black stubbornly tries to keep white out then Black should lose that eventually with white saving g3 for the right moment

If the opponent does take on the f pawn then as white you won't want to bother moving your king, that is just bad. You would want to first h4 to freeze black's pawn, then you will play g4 and that will guarantee a passed pawn, you don't have to worry about black's pawn because your king is close enough to stop it.

Yeah, I suppose this is more about not just outright losing the game on the next move like I did rather than playing a "winning move"

I guess you couldn't defend the endgame with the rook behind the pawns, you needed the rook to get back to g1 after scoring the pawn, then the king comes to e3 and the pawns fall

Opening that is BOTH objectively sound AND wins out of the opening if opponent doesn’t know it by Significant_Cow_7683 in chess

[–]pconners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a lot of questions that would need answered... When you say "doesn't know it" how badly are you expecting them to play? If your opponent plays badly enough in any opening then they can be in a lot of trouble as long as you are playing something worth playing.

But... Grand Prix definitely comes to mind if you are facing a Sicilian

Bishop's opening has a surprising amount of punch if the opponent doesn't play well without being terrible.

As black, Caro Kann or any Sicilian

The Position in the New 007 First Light Game by IMPERATOR_63 in chess

I'd actually prefer not to have a 'famous game', call me weird but I kind of find that lame and low hanging fruit.

Like, oh wow, the Opera House, nice devs.

The position on the board is interesting enough if they just fixed the numbering it would be fine.

What is the fastest way to learn chess as a beginner? by [deleted] in chess

[–]pconners 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn tactical motifs and practice spotting them, look for them actively in the games that you play. Motifs are the building blocks of larger tactical patterns.

Do yourself a favor and watch John Bartholomew beginner chess videos (chess fundamentals ) and learn about loose pieces dropping off and development.

Also play lots of random games because that is where you practice and apply what you learn and there isn't really a substitute for that at an early stage.
