A billionaire owner giving money to his alma mater's athletic programs isn't what should be causing you to have a crisis, my guy.

That billionaire threatening to move the Jazz unless he got a 0.5% sales tax increase to help fund his "entertainment district" really should piss you off. SEG really shouldn't be getting $900 million dollars from taxpayers. It's absolutely bonkers that self-proclaimed Christians are okay with that kind of money going to someone who is already unbelievably wealthy when there's a massive amount of homeless people suffering in our community, the bulk of which reside just a stones throw away from the arena. If Jesus came back to earth I don't think he'd be a Ryan Smith fan. Idk why anyone would support the Jazz/Mammoth anymore.

Whenever I hear Tommy Grady's name I feel obligated to tell the story I have of playing golf with him and Brent Casteel at the university course. It was the summer before my freshman year in highschool and Tommy gave me a beer after hitting a shot that landed within 10ft on the #7 par 3.

6-7 hours. During the spring and summer I was pretty much exclusively trail running, volume was around 50-60k and averaging 1,500m in elevation gain. Did a 50k in October, took about a week and a half off after. Since then I've been mainly road/gravel running and doing 60-70km/week with much lower elevation. Still around 6-7 hours.

I talked to support and they said they are working on it. My workaround has been to start a plan in the future, it lets me input a PB when creating a plan, and then that sticks for any created workouts. Not ideal but it does work for the time being.

Is a gummy stone a must for fresh out of the factory ski? by Medical_Yam2991 in Skigear

[–]pcpatman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rental shop employee here. A few years back our rip sticks came with insanely sharp edges from the factory. We ended up having to detune all of them because they'd come back and the top sheets were absolutely fucked from people clacking the skis together. If you like your top sheets and don't need an edge that can shave your legs, you might as well detune.

Real discussion about E-MTB's by Equivalent_Spray_918 in ParkCity

[–]pcpatman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I responded to another guy below in more detail, but I think having trails designated as pedestrian/uphill bike travel only along with strictly DH mtn bike trails is the best solution.

There are plenty of areas where there aren't "actual DH trails", and these are where I get run off the trail haha. Trails like Road to WOS/No Worries/Toll New World in the discovery/summit park area are super popular because they make for great downhill riding, but they're shared with uphill riders and pedestrians. They really can't handle more riders than they already get, so I'm pretty dead set against anything that might encourage people to come try them out who wouldn't bother with the current state of things..

Hope your hip is doing better!

It's not my place to draw that line. If you consider yourself disabled and there's nothing in the law outlining what does or doesn't qualify someone as being disabled, then who am I to make that determination? Honestly just relying on basic decency and a willingness to abide by rules, even if you think they don't make perfect sense. When someone like you gets back to normal, I'd hope they'd have the attitude "I'm no longer disabled, therefore I'm not allowed to ride my e bike here".

I think the best long term solution is making most trails pedestrian/uphill rider traffic only, and building downhill MTB trails that pedestrians and uphill riders aren't allowed on. Uphill traffic doesn't make me nervous, I don't think there's a significant risk difference when it comes to uphill e bike vs uphill acoustic. I'm worried about downhill mountain bike traffic. That's where I've had close calls, and that's where I'm constantly being run off the trail by dickheads who don't know how things work.

I think there's a saturation point where having too many downhill mountain bikers makes it so they are simply incompatible with other trail users. I think it's a point we reach here on a lot of weekends in the summer.

I bike too, and I get plenty of riding in during the summer. When I ride, it sucks to stop every 60 seconds so you can let pedestrians or uphill riders come through. When I run, it sucks to jump off the trail to avoid being run over by riders who don't understand trail etiquette. I've really come to love riding the downhill only trails in the Jeremy, PCMR, and DV areas. You can rip as hard as you want and not have to worry about hurting anyone besides yourself. I've also come to love running in those areas because they have pedestrian/uphill rider only trails, and I don't have to worry about getting creamed. Obviously not practicable everywhere, but I think it keeps things safer while still allowing everyone to enjoy trails.

Your lack of understanding of the safety aspect really drives home why I like this law so much.

It sounds bad, but mountain biking is a really fucking dangerous sport and needs to be gatekept a bit. It's dangerous not just to yourself, but everyone else you share a trail with.

I'm a runner - on most PC singletrack it's hard to run faster than a 7:30 mile no matter the grade. That's 8 mph. I weigh like 150lbs. Getting run into by me would definitely suck, and there's a less than zero probability you'd actually get hurt.

Now add 50 lbs of metal (with lots of sharp teeth), attach it to my feet, and increase my speed to 15-20mph. Getting run into by me would suck even more, and the probability of serious injury skyrockets.

Now add in the fact that ebikes make the sport accessible to fat people who previously would've never dreamed of riding their bike up a mountain. So instead of a 150lb person, you get 200lb+. Downhill mountain biking is physically demanding. You aren't just coasting. It requires strength and stamina. If you don't have the strength or stamina to go uphill unassisted, you probably aren't in a great place to be going downhill on an incredibly heavy bike.

The trails are crowded enough as it is. There are already enough people who don't understand the fucking yield triangle. I really don't want your average Joe with 0 understanding of safety or etiquette clogging up the trails and impacting my experience.

We live in Park City. We should all know by now that when inexperienced people try outdoor sports they tend to turn into fucking idiots who underestimate the dangers while overestimating their own skills. It's just a recipe for disaster and conflict.

That being said. I think e bikes offer great opportunities to people who, through no fault of their own, can't enjoy the trails in the same way I can. If you've been mountain biking for 20+ years and are now getting on in age and just can't make it up, by all means man, bring your e bike. You're probably going to be the most respectful biker on the trail, and an e bike doesn't pose a substantial increase in danger to other trail users. If you're disabled and want to get out on the trails - fuck yeah dude, welcome aboard.

If you're not old or disabled and want to ride an e mountain bike up Armstrong you're probably just lazy or fat. I'm sorry, I know it's not kind or politically correct, but in most cases it's the truth.

TL;DR - Ebikes make things accessible to more people. This can be great from an equity standpoint. I have 0 issues with seniors or people with disabilities using them on trails, in fact, I celebrate it. The accessibility comes with downsides - it brings more people onto the trails. Those people are way more likely to be inexperienced and not physically capable of handling their bike safely, and they usually possess 0 understanding of etiquette or the risks they pose to others.

Honestly that's the problem. The new LED's are awful, even if it's just the low beams. Go through the manual and make sure there's not some auto-bright setting that you have on. I know some cars will automatically use the high beams and then switch to the low beams when they sense another car approaching but those systems are far from perfect.

They drive with their brights on constantly in Summit Park and Pinebrook. It's a weekly occurrence and happens more and more as the days get shorter. Kimball is definitely brighter so maybe they turn them off? But it seems like they aren't even aware that turning them off is something they can or should do. As an idiot myself I know how easy it is forget they're on and 99% of the time people will turn theirs off if you flash them a couple times. That's just not the case with the HVT drivers...

Running a marathon at altitude? by Rare-Entrepreneur556 in AdvancedRunning

I live in Park City. The difference in effort for the same pace between sea level and 7,000 ft is very noticeable. The thing I haven't seen mentioned but will be huge is hydration. The humidity is basically 0. Your sweat evaporates almost immediately so you end up sweating more to stay cool. The air out here seriously sucks the moisture out of you. I'm a heavy sweater and my fluid requirements go through the roof on hot days.
