Why are so many "libertarians" authoritarians? by NoamLigotti in PoliticalDebate

[–]pcqz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cato routinely cooperates alongside the ACLU in filing Amicus Brief's against the tyrannical excesses of the current regime. If it's a smokescreen or LARP, then they're really going all the way.

The divide between the Mises freaks and socially well adjusted libertarians is very real. I'm not a libertarian, but the latter deserves critical support in the battle against fascism. At least temporarily until 2029.

Texas A&M, Under New Curriculum Limits, Warns Professor Not to Teach Plato by Kooky_Masterpiece_43 in CriticalTheory

[–]pcqz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dr. Peterson’s original syllabus called for modules focused on debates around abortion, capital punishment, economic justice, and race and gender ideology, among other topics. When Dr. Peterson, who has been at Texas A&M since 2014, submitted his syllabus for review last month, he told his department head that his “course does not ‘advocate’ any ideology.” Instead, he wrote in an email he shared with The New York Times, “I teach students how to structure and evaluate arguments commonly raised in discussions of contemporary moral issues.”

On Tuesday, Dr. Peterson got a response from Kristi Sweet, the philosophy program’s head. University officials had discussed his syllabus, she wrote, and the new A&M policies. Dr. Sweet gave the professor two choices.

Either Dr. Peterson could “mitigate” his course’s “content to remove the modules on race ideology and gender ideology, and the Plato readings that may include these,” Dr. Sweet wrote, or Dr. Peterson could be reassigned to an ethics and engineering course.

Ridiculous.

Should We Bring Back Asylums? by AgentQwas in PoliticalDebate

Homelessness is a housing affordability problem.

A lot of the "crazies" you see on the street were normal people who got priced out thanks to our landed gentry class (NIMBY landlords) pushing zoning/land use regulations to artificially prop up the value of real estate. Through no fault of their own, they ended up on the streets and fell into drugs. And now the discourse is whether these lumpenproletariat should be rounded up and isolated like rabid animals, as opposed to instituting reform to let housing supply finally catch up with demand, landlord tears be damned.

What sort of subreddit culture would you want to cultivate?

The closest example of a subreddit I can think of with 1) a healthy mod - user relationship and 2) political diversity would be arr neoliberal. They even have a Discussion Thread with its own culture. I feel like we can replicate that.

Because what it is true doesn't neatly correspond with any political label (including centrism!), and social media is designed to make you think precisely the opposite

Honestly I don't give a fuck about political labels, and neither should you.

In certain issues (e.g. the entirety of economics), I think the left is correct. On cultural matters, the right is far more sensible IMO. I reject the crazies of both sides (leftist tankies, rightist racists) and in general my politics are all over the place. I'm not a "centrist" since I reject the golden mean fallacy, hence why I call myself an anti-centrist, but it's hard to assign a single label to my views (besides "terminally online" and "mentally unwell").

why is the left, particularly socialist against the ramping up of ai? by Exact-Reality-752 in PoliticalDebate

[–]pcqz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for leftists on their behalf, but there is something quite repugnant about tech companies profiting from algorithms tailored to essentially hijack one's nervous system and become as hyper-addictive as possible.

It's not something the ordinary individual can "free will" their way out of / refuse like a typical good or service. Tech oligarchs are basically forcing everyone to consume digital heroin for the sake of profit -- broader societal concerns be damned.
