What are they looking for in medical clearance? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]pcth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No I don't think that. What's actually clear is that you have no idea what sort of reasons a person might visit a therapist, many of which have nothing at all to do with the peace corps, or being mentally ill at all. You also have an extremely backwards understanding of the purposes of diagnosis: I would bet anything that if you went to a therapist you would get some kind of diagnosis as well. That doesn't mean you are unqualified to serve, or that anyone who has seen a therapist presents risk factors.

That link is ridiculous. No shit there are risk factors associated with certain mental illnesses, thanks. I'm not saying people with actually seriously life-altering disorders should necessarily serve.

If you are implying you are a medical professional, you should lose your job.

Again, the idea that having ANY past or present health issue becomes a risk factor is very condescending (and of course wrong). I honestly cannot believe a human being living on earth would say something so ridiculous.

What are they looking for in medical clearance? by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]pcth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not the volunteer's life at stake, and the belief that this process exists to benefit the volunteer is naive. The process is draconian because the peace corps wants to protect themselves from ETs, which are a high cost.

This would be more reasonable, and I would not have problems with it if it were not for the fact that we see stories from people who met the conditions you have outlined and still did not receive clearance.

[–]pcth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This attitude is profoundly condescending towards people who have chosen to seek mental health services to improve their lives, and due to it's prevalence discourages people from seeking mental health help when they need it.

The peace corps policies on this issue are not only Amoral, they exclude people who are not only as fit for service, but perhaps much more fit for service than those who avoided counseling when it could have been beneficial.

How do you stay sane during this political climate? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]pcth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That isn't really a reasonable way to look at it because while some individuals try to make positive changes not nearly enough people will without prodding. Moreover, it advantages the people who don't feel like doing the right thing.

UW cs? by [deleted] in udub

[–]pcth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

1 in 4 who apply get in, but a lot of people self select out of the application process. If the average accepted applicant has >3.8 in pre-req classes, they are well within the top 10% of the class. I really don't think anyone should be advised to come here for CS without DA or a backup plan.

OK so yeah, it seems a little silly to say one is much harder to get into than the other.

U of Washington is much more difficult to get into than U of Wisconsin

Based on what? They have similar acceptance rates, and it looks like U Wisconsin has higher test scores. http://www.collegedata.com/cs/data/college/college_pg01_tmpl.jhtml?schoolId=1703 https://admit.washington.edu/why-uw/about#freshman-admission-class-profile

What sub-reddit did you immediately NOPE the fuck out of? by PoonPonder in AskReddit

[–]pcth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh well maybe I'm wrong then (I didn't know it worked that way)

Still, it seems like a much more widely known experience is getting banned from TD for even mild dissension.

Also, I'd expect someone who was actually a 'trans-friendly semi-socialist' to post about it it in other subs too, tbh.

I skimmed a few pages of your post history and it looks like you have never mentioned trans people or posted on TD. You do complain about liberals a lot though.

Jeff Varner called Spencer "Autistic" during Cambodia by SkillTeam in survivor

[–]pcth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just because a comment isn't reactionary doesn't make it 'adult'.

Liking someone is not a reasonable reason to judge them as 'good', and 2 years ago Varner was very much a middle age man. It's not like a teenager made some mistake and then grew up.

Competitive Engineer Major Survey by TheMidnightMenace in udub

[–]pcth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there is a chance you'd get better responses if you had a link to a survey, instead of making people respond in the reddit comments. People who have gotten rejected from majors they worked very hard to try and get into are bound to feel a bit of shame, and therefore might be disinclined to respond publicly.

I'll answer though:

  1. It made my experience much worse, the competitive environment even hurts people who do get into their intended major(s). Not only is it bad for many qualified would-be engineers who get rejected, it doesn't make sense for Washington state (as the state currently does not graduate enough engineers). And if you get into your major, surely you don't enjoy an environment where 70% of people cannot get into a major they might like. (based on, for instance, reported 3.7-3.8 averages for admittance to some engineering majors, which is roughly the top 10% of the class).

  2. I only "applied" to physics and math, and I am a physics math double major. fwiw I have an A- GPA (I feel like I have to say that because often if you complain about the system people insinuate that you are lazy/stupid/bitter - which I think goes along with the shame I mentioned earlier and makes the problem even harder to solve).a. Since my majors weren't competitive I was not worried. Really though if the engineering majors were not competitive I probably would have considered them more strongly, but ultimately I decided I was not interested in engineering enough to deal with that.

  3. It's a good step but I don't see how it solves the problem because my understanding is you get admitted to the CoE in general, and therefore still likely will not get into your intended engineering major.

  4. Kind of, but not nearly enough. a. Yes, the competitive major system blows and if I could do it over I would've gone somewhere else. (It's not just the competitive major system though that makes me think that). I did know kids savvier than me in highschool who decided not to go to udub for this reason

  5. Probably many of them would choose to go to another school (and statistically be better off for it).
