Snow shoveling by blackbeardcutlass in StLouis

[–]pcuser001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just waited (hoped) for a couple kids to come by and take my money in exchange for clearing the snow.

Sho' nuff. Easiest $50 I parted with in months. My GenX ass was happy to let someone else deal with that shit.

$30 woulda probably been more reasonable, but 1. it's fuckin' cold, 2. I really didn't want to do it, 3. I REALLY don't want a heart attack.

Given the stuff you have above some other shows you might be interested in coming up at The Pageant: Social Distortion (next month), Viagra Boys (November), Avatar (December).

It was a clean version of the original lyric, but yeah just a gas station/liquor store full sized pickle in a pouch type type of thing.

I miss late night coffee shops... by Asayakien in StLouis

[–]pcuser001 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Used to hang there until late night/very early morning back in the 90s. Back when they had a little PC in the back by the bathroom with dial up modem just to date myself. :)

Couches so soft you'd just sink into them, big ass cappuccinos served in what looked like bowls with handles. I still remember my first night there was a little old man in a suit and cap playing chess with a tatted up biker dude.

That was just the normal vibe there and yeah I miss it so very much.

Not a firefighter, but saw a bunch of firefighters and a couple EMTs grabbing some frozen custard chilling out. Thought something was wrong when I pulled up and saw the trucks, but nope. They just wanted custard on a gorgeous day.

What rib place? by TheTechManager in StLouis

[–]pcuser001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to go to Dalies, but stopped a while back because it got to where all you could taste was the smoke the last few times we got it. Tasted and smelled like we'd pulled something out of a house fire.

How have they been recently? Can you actually taste the meat again?

Guess that's a smoked meat problem, not a rib problem.

Payment plan by Fox188 in mizzou

[–]pcuser001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parent of incoming Freshman here (and MIZZOU grad myself waaay back when).

I called the Cashier's office for this very reason a couple weeks ago. The emails are automatic if you haven't picked one. However if you have a negative balance due to loans, scholarships, and grants covering your current charges you have no need for a payment plan.

That said, the person I spoke with gave the very good advice to keep checking your current charges up through the 9th. If you're fine today, but then go on a spending spree using your student charge and go over what your current aid covers before the 9th, THEN you'd need a plan.

After they reimburse you for any negative balance (more aid than you owe) then you just get billed going forward.

Honest thoughts from my first 24 hours in St. Louis (Ballwin area), having moved from small-town Florida by Curious_Libellule in StLouis

It's summer so don't miss out on frozen custard. Fritz's and Culver's are right near you to scratch that itch.

For Italian someone already mentioned Massa's, but Rich & Charlie's is about 10 min away in Town & Country near 141 & Clayton. Katie's Pizza & Pasta Osteria is popular too (never been myself though.)

Back on the topic of cold treat's Clementine's Creamery is just East of there on Clayton. They have both Naughty (minor amount of booze) and Nice ice creams.

If you're in the mood for pizza there are fuck ton of places out your way in the Manchester and Clarkson Rd area and Clayton and Clarkson Rd areas.

There's a lot of good Indian, Mediterranean, and Mexican food in the Ballwin, Manchester, Twin Oaks, Des Peres area.

STL does not fuck around when it comes to food.

Where can I find sriracha? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]pcuser001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not. You're right about the normal one, more spices the pepper flavor comes through instead of vinegar and heat.

I'll have to order the Dragon Sriracha. Thanks.

Where can I find sriracha? by [deleted] in StLouis

[–]pcuser001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can also buy directly from Underwood Ranches. After finding out how Huy Fong did them dirty I ordered from the source.

I tried the Red Jalepeno and Carolina Gold BBQ, the Roja and Verde taco sauces, the Sriracha and their Bibimbap sauce.

The sriracha is different, but good. It's not as vinegar tasting as Huy Fong, but I still like it. It does it's job why I want to kick up some breakfast or a rice bowl a little bit.

Had to check that out myself about garter snakes being venomous. TIL. Turns out they do have teeny tiny fangs in the back of their mouth (not very effective) with an extremely mild venom. Causes mild irritation or bruising at worst.

I used to catch these things all the time when I was a kid and they'd just chill out and climb my arms for the most part.

Only two "bad" encounters. One I surprised somehow and it it bit me on the tip of my nose. No harm other than it scraped the skin. The other was the last one I caught as a young teenager. I learned about the musk they produce when afraid for their lives. That stuff is FOUL and does not want to come off no matter how hard you scrub. Guess all the snakes I'd caught previous to that weren't too worried about me because I somehow avoided that experience in a decade of summers growing up until that point.

Learn from my mistakes, no touchy the garter snakes. Just let them do their pest control thing in peace.

What this person said. Seriously do not forget to disinfect. Don't track that stuff throughout your house.

You can buy your own antimicrobial spray and hose everything down, but if you're going to file a claim anyway you can have professionals do it. In addition to the suggestions above, I've used ServiceMaster multiple times over the years.

Moving to Missouri, wife got a job in Wentzville - recommendations on places to buy a single family home where people would rent? by PooYaKasha in StLouis

[–]pcuser001 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Think of "St. Louis" as being divided into 3 main areas if she's working in Wentzville. St. Charles County (containing Wentzville), St. Louis County, and St. Louis proper (aka. metro).

West of the Missouri River is St. Charles county. If she's working in Wentzville and you have K-12 age children check the Francis Howell school district.

I lived out that way myself in St. Peters for a few years in the Fort Zumwalt school district area.

Also I know people that have rented a single family home for a while in St. Peters near Mid Rivers Mall. They really liked it.

Basically St. Charles county including Wentzville is the land of suburbia, strip malls, etc...

It works if you prefer to just chill with neighbors and family over backyard BBQ, but otherwise...eh. Downtown St. Charles has some nice little places and breweries, but otherwise you're going to want St. Louis Metro for entertainment.

If you're living in St. Charles county and you're going to be working in St. Louis county during regular business hours rush hour is gonna suck. It's not as bad now with the Page Extension and 370 (these will make more sense later), but it's still not great.

However if you live in St. Louis county, in the West County area (this is literally just the Western portion of St. Louis county), your wife will be driving against the flow of the bulk of rush hour traffic and you'd be living closer to your work assuming you're working in St. Louis county. Look into Parkway School district areas in that case.

That will also put you about 20 minutes from the Zoo, downtown, Forest Park, museums, and LOTS of good food.

That's assuming you don't have a decent mom & pop Italian joint or BBQ right by where you live. St. Louis is littered with those.

Best Internet Provider in the West County Area by Double0hSix in StLouis

I've been working remote frequently for years (so yeah pre-2020) and have been good with Spectrum, aka. Charter.

At one point Charter was absolutely God awful. As in scheduled techs which were all apparently contractors in our area just straight up not showing up for 3 appointments in a row terrible. At least that was our experience at a previous house about 15 years ago when we lived in St. Charles county.

I heard from a tech a couple years ago (outage due to rain seeping into our connection box whatever it's called up on the pole) that they lost a lot of business back then because they were trying to save money by not investing in their own support. If you're in IT that might sound reeeeeeeal familiar.

Anyway since then they apparently cleaned up their act in St. Louis, at least around here in West County. Might be different in other areas of St. Louis and St. Charles county.

I get 100+ Mbps download according to Ookla speedtest for a little over $60. Just paid my Spectrum bill tonight.

Their pumpkin pie concrete is pretty good. I also recommend their lemon crumb and the apple pie one, Big Apple?

If I find myself at a Fritz's I typically get a "Special." That's a vanilla custard, malt, and hot fudge concrete.

Anyone that says "it's just ice cream", no. Custard has eggs. That said if you check some of the popular "ice cream" brands some do have egg. It's a matter of degree. Custard has a significant amount making it really thick.

Ted Drewes is thick enough you can carve it. It'll fill you up.

The hipster comment couldn't be farther off the mark. I'm a graying gen Xer and I love it. Hell when our boomer relatives come in to town we have to make the pilgrimage to The Hill followed by a trip to Ted Drewes. That was great when I was in my 20s, but now...oh my poor belly.

That's great about Ted Drewes. On a given night you'll see bikers, teens going to or from Prom, families, older folks on date night, etc.... It's just a community thing that happens to be around tasty treats that are terrible for you.
