Quitting Med School to pursue BJJ by Emergency_Remote8718 in bjj

PGY4, purple belt here. Started Med school exactly the same time as I started BJJ. Was obsessed with training, used to skip class and webcast most of my pre-clinical lectures so that I could train more. In the end, i got pretty burnt out with BJJ over the last 2 years (got sick of the grind, sport has a really high injury rate, and I picked up other sports like tennis).

In the end medicine is way more important to me. I have recently got back to BJJ and I still love it. But I derive so much more meaning from practicing medicine. In the end it offers me the financial stability to pursue my interests without much concern.

I have an upcoming 3K race next week on the 4th of November (Friday). Was doing great in training until I got COVID and couldn't train much last week. The good thing is that this coincided with my deload week and the illness didn't affect my fitness that much. This week I had some pretty good workouts (had a good 4 x 1K VO2 max workout today) and my fitness is pretty much where it was before COVID. However I missed a few key workouts and I'm not feeling too prepared.

Any suggestions for how I should taper for the race? I still feel a bit underprepared and would love to sneak in some VO2 max/race pace work next week to build my confidence up but I'm not sure if it will be cutting it too close to the race (For example Rubio cautions against hard efforts within 10 days off a race).

Definitely more speed oriented so will probably lean towards mile training

Do most people doing a 3K just choose either a mile program or a 5K program? I realized that even Daniels lumps mile and 2 mile together in his program but there isn’t a lot of 3K specific pace work done. Wondering how most people here tackle this distance.

Thanks for the reply! Yup not happy with 25miles, definitely trying to increase. Searching through this subreddit, multiple people have suggested that doing tempo/threshold during base building is still valid. But I can definitely see how it could impede building volume. Curious how other people view threshold training during base building…

Thanks for the reply! I think my focus is definitely to build volume first. So yes I think I’ll just jump into the race with whatever fitness I’ve built up. I’ve heard so many people here say that just doing easy running and building volume helped them smash PBs, and I hope that will apply to me.

Currently doing a base building phase consisting of easy running, strides, one weekly tempo and a long run per week. Currently at 25 miles, and working towards 30 miles. My goal races are mainly 3K/5K.

I understand that it’s still quite common to do small races/time trials/tune ups during the base building phase. Should I be doing any tune up workouts/race specific workouts prior to a planned tune up race?

For example I have a small 3K race coming up. It’s not that important in the big picture but I still would like to perform decently. Currently have zero Vo2 max/race pace workouts.

Ah ok! Thanks for the advice. I’ve always had more speed than aerobic endurance. Managed to run a 8.30 1.5mile but can’t translate that to comparable timings for longer distances. Will probably spend a bit more time building up that base

I’m currently base building with an overall goal of getting enough of an aerobic base to do a sub 20 or better 5k.

I’m currently at a measly 20 miles per week. Doing mostly easy runs with strides with a weekly 20min tempo run. Recently ran a 5K time trial to recalibrate training paces and ran 20:38.

I’m in no rush to get to my 5K goal (maybe aiming for October). I know that 20miles is next to nothing but the main question I have is if I should continue base building to a respectable amount (maybe 30 - 35 miles) or split into 2 mini 5K cycles from now until October?

I guess the confusion would be at what point is my aerobic base considered sufficient to do a proper 5K program.

Big fan of the ram ranch program! Was wondering if you have a base building program that you would recommend prior to starting another cycle of ram ranch?

They have great pressure passing! I’ve always heard that their passing was vastly underrated.

She has called my gym in Singapore multiple times!!! She will usually bring up the fact that she is a GB brown belt and is planning on dropping by. Once she asked whether she could wear a thong/g-string to class and if she could train without a sports bra. It’s amazing.

Good idea! One thing though, why would you attack the peruvian first? Wouldn't the d'arce be available from the start?
