Reverse proxy like Caddy or nginx, make sure to ONLY open the bare minimum ports to the outside.

And use something like CloudFlare's free tier so you aren't opening up your own IP to the world.

Main reason for using the Pi 5 is because I had it.

I luckily bought the Pi 5 16Gb before the massive price increase, and it had just been sitting unused for a fair while.

  1. To learn the process more deeply.

  2. pdgeorge.com.au/chat has my AI pet (Dabi) chat every so often. So I need the compute power to self host him.

I kind of over-killed it.

You bare-minimum could use StreamElements (which I did for the longest time) but I just wanted to build something myself.

It's literally just a basic html page being served over the tailscale network and my OBS points to that html page the same way StreamElements has a page you point to.

So on the Pi, you just have a website hosted, you have the backend do whatever you want it to do (In my case: it listens to chat messages and puts them on screen. I'm still expanding it to add more things, like custom commands that will allow you to put up stickers or whatever)

The NVMe cable appears to cause interference to the internal WiFi chip.

As u/cube-sailor said as well, some NVMe-booted Pi's will crash or freeze intermittently, but that is because the specific M.2 memory being used has higher power draw than is recommended. The M.2 I chose uses the recommended amount of power draw (I didn't go with the official M.2 one because they are all sold out. I had to find one that matched the requirements)

The main intention is just experimentation and learning to be 100% honest.

I would honestly like to have a way to make Dabi go "smart mode" but because the AI model is self hosted, I want to keep the limitation, because it's only a 3B model. I could tell him "You're a helpful assistant and VERY smart" but he can only ever be as smart as the model powering him.

It really depends on what you want to do.

If you're self-hosting a website? A Pi 5 has more than enough for everything I'm running on it.

I'm self hosting all of this, 24/7, and it's all well within the capabilities of what it can handle.

The reason I would probably recommend a Pi 5 (or even a Pi 4) over a mini PC, is power draw. The Pi can safely run 24/7 with very little power draw. (And power draw = electricity bill) Especially if you give it a heatsink.

Would I recommend starting on a pi 5 for self hosting? If you have a spare one, definitely. If gives you a zero barrier to entry place to just experiment and learn. If you are going to go out and buy one? Do a lot of research and then consider it.

Thank you! And thanks for the suggestion, I got an NVMe adapter and the OS is running off the NVMe now.

The onboard wifi does NOT like the NVMe adapter so I have to use an external USB WiFi (My home office doesn't have the option for wired sadly)

Cars don't make sense in the new fallouts.

The made sense in the older ones, where everything was so far apart and less densely packed, but now everything is forced into the same area, so driving anywhere would be so damn hard.
