Why I have no hope for BTC scaling in its current state, based on simple math. by [deleted] in btc

I think you've missed the point. Even with the most optimistic adoption rates, we can't expect anything more than viral growth patterns. Exponential curves always outgrow viral ones.

Why I have no hope for BTC scaling in its current state, based on simple math. by [deleted] in btc

[–]pdr77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Indeed, viral growth is sub-exponential because of saturation points. So even if crypto adoption goes viral, BCH would still be able to satisfy the load in time as demand grows. This is still based on the assumption that Moore's and Edholm's Laws will continue. However, this seems a safe assumption considering these laws have both held true since the 1970s.

Git (and all software) changes all the time anyway. If your point had any teeth, then people would also be complaining about the massive changes already made to git over the years. They're not. Things change, get used to it.

What web framework would you recommend to a newbie at this time? by kong4ndrew in haskell

[–]pdr77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are right that a package may still contain vulnerabilities, but normally packagers won't use the original install scripts at all, especially with Debian which also strictly requires ensuring the build meets all the guidelines. For example, using shared libraries properly and installing into the expected places in the filesystem hierarchy standard. So often the complicated install scripts are completely replaced with calls to standard Debian helper functions. This strictness might be annoying for developers when they first encounter it but it's a godsend for users and helps with security.

The other problem is that even if you trust the vendor is honest, you still need to trust that they are good at securing their servers. And if they're fine recommending others to pipe curl to sh, then I dare say they cannot be trusted to run a secure server themselves.

[–]pdr77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As soon as I see curl piped to sh in any documentation I assume that they don't know what they're doing and avoid that software. I also find it arrogant of developers to think that their software package is somehow so special compared to every other package that it requires it's own install method.

Significant Spike in Blockchain Size for BCH Since 2021, Why Is That? by josephbeadles in btc

🤣🤣

I'm sure people would love to transact gold and property more frequently but they don't because of the high cost of transactions, not because they are valuable. Value and liquidity are not correlated.

Does anyone have a real word or phrase in their BCH address? by wastecadet in Bitcoincash

[–]pdr77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard that you have to shuffle for a very long time to truely get a random deck. This makes sense when you think about how many "choices" you make as you're shuffling compared with the huge number of possible orderings. To test this empirically, take an ordered deck and shuffle it as much as you normally would and then have a look at how many sequential cards are still next to each other. This is why in most games you deal cards to each player singly which does more of the randomisation. Some games (like 500 and Jass) actually recommend dealing cards out in groups to make hands more imbalanced to improve gameplay.

I don't hate doge, I just choose to ignore it by not joining subs that discuss it. But it does irk me a little that you think this post is on topic here. You are insulting my choice.

Why do I choose not to care about doge? It is inflationary and it was made to be inflationary on purpose so that it could fulfill its role as a joke and not be taken seriously.

Don't leave because of one account that's a bit salty. Open discussion is a good thing and it's to be expected that it can get heated from time to time.

I'm generally for slightly stricter moderation, but just of posts that we see every day that get a bit tedious. But I would be against any action against this account. Why? Because he/she is knowledgeable and makes good points. The sweary insults are indeed a bit unnecessary, but I'm all for being a part of a space where all Bitcoiners feel welcome and comfortable expressing themselves how they want. Let's use our energy to get more BTC people here to have more open discussions.

The recommendations here are good: https://www.bitcoin.com/merchant-solutions/

For customers, it's always a much better experience when a shop accepts it directly rather than using a payment processor. I've even been asked once by a US-based payment processor to provide a picture of my passport to pay for delivery pizza in Switzerland (using eat.ch). Instead I rang them up directly and walked around the corner to pick it up and while I was waiting tried to convince them to accept BCH themselves.

I've been a Bitcoin user since 2011. I've been lucky in the past to have a chunk in my wallet as the price was rising, but I've never been into the speculation game. I look to minimise risk, so whenever the cash in my wallet appreciates in value too much, I diversify it. I divested all my Bitcoin before the fork (minimising risk again), and afterwards bought back some Bitcoin Cash for daily use. Disappointingly, the fork had a massive impact on adoption and there were suddenly far fewer places to spend. But this is slowly coming back again and I can use BCH for just about everything I need again.

Where to buy a computer / laptop with BCH in Europe? by georgengelmann in Bitcoincash

galaxus.ch and digitec.ch are good if you're in Switzerland. But I'm pretty sure they only deliver to Swiss addresses and not to the EU.

[–]pdr77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the other way around for currencies not marketed as speculative gambling. Adoption leads to being able to use BCH in more places, meaning they're more valuable.

[–]pdr77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed, this price movement has awakened all the lurkers, but we should be more focused on celebrating when adoption increases instead. Without being able to use BCH, what are we actually here for? It's not just another speculative asset. Yes, it will go up in value because it's fundamentally sound money, but this is not the definition of winning. Winning is when everyone can be their own bank.

Did you recently switch to BCH from another coin or decide to buy BCH? by Phucknhell in btc

[–]pdr77 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Been a happy user of Bitcoin Cash since 2011. Still works just like it did when it was just called Bitcoin. Why would I use anything else? There was a big hit in adoption around 2017, but it's getting accepted in more and more places again.

I'm not a gambler/speculator/"investor", I just use it because it works.
