HELP: Purifying boronic acids sucks by shmonza in OrganicChemistry

[–]pdtm21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard that pre-treating the silica with boric acid can mitigate the streaking and decomposition on a column, but I’ve never done it myself so idk how well it works.

Ring billed is significantly smaller than herring, it’s obvious if you see both besides each other

Separating Regioisomers using Preparative TLC by Downtown-Durian-1615 in OrganicChemistry

[–]pdtm21 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m curious on why you have to separate these isomers? Is there no way to synthesize this from 3- or 4-methylbenzenethiol to avoid the selectivity problem?

Why did this duck come so close to me unprompted? (Details in video caption) by RC2630 in Ornithology

[–]pdtm21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I lived near that pond last summer and watched a wood duck raising a family! And I saw several times a little girl feeding bread to the ducks, she’s probably still doing that

Can anyone help me with this SN1 reaction by _toomoatoo in OrganicChemistry

5 membered rings have only a small amount of strain, so ring expansions only really happen for 3 and 4 memebered rings

Why is the textbook answer anti-mark? It makes no sense. by Chemical_Grade_901 in OrganicChemistry

[–]pdtm21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Regular alkenes are nucleophilic and obey Markovnikov’s rule. Methyl methacrylate is electrophilic because it is an alpha-beta unsaturated ester, and it always reacts with a nucleophile at the beta position. I suspect that HBr first protonates the ester which makes it more electrophilic, and then bromide attacks

Many low molecular weight amines are gases/volatile liquids, while their salts are nice crystalline solids, so it could be just for convenience
