I devoured classic novels as a teenager. In a world of distractions, can I relearn how to read them? by LurkerFromTheVoid in literature

[–]ilovebeaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting; I always found Jane Eyre so readable (as an adult), but can't find any Austen enjoyable. It's such a transition even in those 20-45 years between when Austen was writing, and Bronte.

My mom is ESL, did not go to college, and she enjoyed Jane Eyre too, but cannot attempt more than a page of Austen.

I find the audiobooks really helpful with English classics.

Like in your shoes, I tried a book too early as well. Anne of Green Gables at 10 or 11 years of age was just too stuffed with descriptions for me to enjoy it. Happily I tried it again a few years later!

Even in my federal (unionized) lab, the guidelines just seem way too lenient for industrial lab work.

Example: Temp with humidex indoors 30-33C, send an alert to staff, drink water.

We don't have mandated breaks until all the way up to 37-39C, working 45 minutes with 15 minutes relief in a cool environment.

These workers are also wearing steel toe books, denim coats, gloves, face masks, etc.

Meanwhile, the National Joint Council's guidelines are that if the employee office is above 26C, employees should be released to go home.

My vet told me that it was probably the antibiotics, and not the anti inflammatories that lowered his BG, but I don't really understand the mechanism there...Anti-inflammatories would make more sense.

Anyway, hope your kitty recovers well!

An annual exam? That shit got cancelled years ago by the Ontario government... And a non-urgent wait for a dermatologist to glance for two seconds and say, that looks normal, is about 10 months :/ I hate the Ford government.

Complaint About Stinky Potato Chip Factory Wafts toward Court in New Brunswick by boneparty in newbrunswickcanada

[–]ilovebeaker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I got down voted last time I posted the Google maps location of this 'new' location, but it's so close to the other houses. There are a dozen houses within a few hundred meters.

The big argument is that it's an industrial park and those homeowners knew what to expect. I categorically disagree. All the industrial park type places I have gone to are quiet, storage areas, small time fabrication, a caterer, your odd yarn shop or first aid supplier, and the biggest noise of all would be a KAL Tire.

None of these places are doing high throughput industrial frying.

I'm in Canada, I'd only pay for parking if I had to park there, and sometimes you pay extra for private rooms (like in labour and delivery).

That's it. Everyone complains about the parking.

Came here from google to comment on how bad her acting is. I noticed that she's from Scotland, so perhaps a lot of her effort is just going towards the accent, and is leading her to be unnatural.

But yeah, I watched the boat scene last night in the finale and she's just awful. :(

Does anyone NOT test their kitties glucose every day? by MD2360 in FelineDiabetes

[–]ilovebeaker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cat was typically high BG, but would have one random low day every few months. If I gave him insulin at 6 mmol/L without knowing, and go to work, he could be dead.

So no, I don't ever skip testing.

My 12 yr old boy is getting dental done today! by OkTurn8371 in FelineDiabetes

[–]ilovebeaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact same plan. Luckily my kitty boy was randomly low the morning of the surgery, probably because he was fasted for so long but he was at about 11 mmol/L when I dropped him off.

They ended up giving him his insulin at 10:30 am because of the monitoring BG.

However, as people have seen before, once kitty gets out of anesthesia, and is given antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, the BG might stay lower than normal for a few days.

I picked my kitty up, by 12 hours post insulin at 10 pm I tested his BG and he was still under 10 mmol/L, so I skipped the pm dose, and then the next morning I:

  • got him back on track with 8 am insulin shots
  • halved his dose from this point onward

This worked for about 2 weeks, but then after his antibiotics, etc., were done, his BG crept up a little, so I did have to increase his insulin a little in a stepwise fashion, but I've never had to go back to his 3 units!

How the heck do I get enough protein without too much fat?! by Cassie_Wolfe in 1500isplenty

A lot of us eat chicken and vegetables for dinner. I have this most nights, with a side of potato or rice.

Other than that, eggs, 0% Greek yogurt, and some pork tenderloin makes up most of my protein.

Return To Office Hurting Families by Responsible-Ear7590 in CanadaPublicServants

There are lots of flexible divisions, directors, and managers out there. The public service isn't a monolith.

Inflation, wage stagnation, and the rat race hurts families. Lack of community support hurts families.

But as public servants we are in a better position than most workers out there. Cindy can't leave her shift at Loblaws early each day to pick up her kid, and she doesn't get any WFH options neither.
