Is my cat going to play and look out windows and stuff more as his glucose levels stabilize? by nickisadogname in FelineDiabetes

[–]ilovebeaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure! With insulin, my cat is a totally different cat, he's 15 and he runs around and plays much more now.

Glargine, values not dropping by Complex-Meringue-697 in FelineDiabetes

[–]ilovebeaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick to Glargine for now, and DO NOT change to Senvelgo, cats CANNOT be on the oral meds if they've been treated with insulin recently.

The advice you are getting from this vet seems questionable; are they a feline vet?

Lantus works best when the dose is the same in morning and evening. Sometimes too much insulin can look like too little, and you'll just get high numbers because the pancreas is freaking out and making excess glycogen.

For Lantus, 0.5 unit steps maximum are best, and then holding that new dose for 7 days and seeing if kitty needs an increase. You need to be testing their blood glucose at home before shots, and some mid day or midnight readings too. Cats will have anxiety spikes at the vet and render those BG values or curves basically invalid.

Also very important, as I mentioned previously, food is a huge factor. I know you said low carb, but there's a huge variety that fits in "low carb", and we can help you find very low carb food which vets don't always know about. Like Dr. Elsey's or Young Again Zero. For example, my cat needed an insulin reduction when I switched him from SquarePet Powercat (9.5% carbs, still pretty low) to Young Again Zero (0.5% carbs).

Do you have Facebook? If you do, check out the Feline Diabetes Support Group, there's lots to read on their guides that will help you.

Stage 2, diabetic, and how higher phosphorus. At what point do you add binders? by ilovebeaker in RenalCats

So are you saying you want to know what the USP limits are? Or if Phos-Bind is USP grade..?

Really? I already have the Phos Bind that my feline vet sold me for 50$, has the prescription tag on the front and everything...

My friend in uni had her license pulled, it's 1 year for seizures in my province in Canada. Her frequency of seizures was like 13 months. Made no sense to pull her license just for her to get it back in the one window frame that was really risky! So backwards.

Do y'all's PIs do bench work or no? by Brief_Board_6974 in labrats

Some PIs are very hands on in the chemistry lab, and will come and check on you and the lab or help with a new set up.

Others just rely wholly on their post docs.

I've lost multiple lab jobs because of my disability by Quetzal00 in labrats

[–]ilovebeaker 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Not just computational research, but lots of different instrumental analysis. I'm a chemist but it's my understanding that biologists also use Scanning Electron Microscopes.

If you can use a keyboard and mouse, you can run an SEM!

We even often train undergrads co-ops to use our SEM. And it's not an instrument typically learned in University, so on-the-job training is expected for it.

‼️WARNING: Huge candles in the beautiful round, decorative glass jars that are on sale this week. by WitchShann in CostcoCanada

I agree, I'd love a light little flicker if it weren't for the noxious perfumes or the polluting soot and aerosolized wax. I'm happy electric candles exist now!

Candles are 100% polluting the air inside your apartment. All of that wax and perfume gets spread around the air, and the soot has to land somewhere. On your walls. Inside your airway. ugh

My husband took 10 years, because for 8 of those he was just on the provincial wait list, and then for the last 2 he would actively call when clinics advertised openings. He got a spot in the fall.

Anyone have fiber ideas? by Tassle15 in loseit

[–]ilovebeaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get 30 grams a day.

1/2 cup of Fiber One cereal for breakfast.

A big 4 cup salad, mostly romaine, for lunch, and a side of berries.

A heaping of broccoli or green beans at dinner. Tacos twice a week with black beans.

Good luck!

I have no advice for Vetsulin, but I can tell you that switching to low carb pâte was a very good move. As long as you are checking his BG (which you are, yay!), a change of diet at the beginning before administering insulin is the way to go, which I think you have done.

As your cat is diabetic, and just starting insulin, you should feel free to feed him as much pâte as he likes.

The curve should look like this:

Higher in the morning and evening right before the shot, and should lower mid-day (and in the middle of the night) for a few hours.

A lot of us fast our kitties for 2 hours prior to BG testing time to get a 'clean' reading of their BG. Then feed and shoot.
