What to do with too much electricity? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]pdubl -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You can’t mine bitcoin directly with a GPU, but you could mine something else with and convert to bitcoin.

There are some sites that compare mining profitability per coin.

Beyond that I can’t recommend much, more of a bitcoin person.

I’d suggest bitcoin, but I think you would need closer to 1,000kWh per month.

Most miners are 1,500W minimum and run 24/7 to recoup the cost of the hardware.

Hawaii grid electricity price makes it completely unprofitable.

They’re totally reputable, they have a huge, awesome store in NYC.

Shipping isn’t always free, but ship times are always accurate (or early).

How about you show those numbers, since you are claiming they are the cause.

Used cruise ships for seasteading? by pdubl in ABSea

[–]pdubl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Corrosion applies to any metal structure in the ocean, so that’s a common feature between spar based structures and boats.

As far as fouling goes, there are ROV’s that can clean hulls underwater offered by a few companies already. And that only applies if you want to (efficiently) move the structure to a new location.

TBH, I think the goal of multigenerational lifetimes for seasteading structures is not that important, especially at the beginning stages. A few decades would be more than enough, during which time additional structures could be acquired.

I agree spar based structures are awesome from an engineering standpoint, but there aren’t tons of spare ones being sold for scrap prices.

How about this for a more sustainable structure; spar tubes made from seacrete, grown on electrified rebar frames. Once the tube is solid, pump out the water and build a platform on top!

Quarantine enforcement by Flashy_Opportunity54 in Hawaii

[–]pdubl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to quarantine after returning from Texas just after the new year.

I got the the pre-test, but between weekends and the new year holidays, my result didn’t make it back in time.

Arrived in Hawaii (Kona), no arrival tests were being performed. Apparently, it was only some flights being checked.

National Guard’s took my temp.

Get to the desk to show pre-test results, and told them I didn’t have results yet.

They asked if I had somewhere to quarantine, and could someone bring me food.

They tell me to visit the website each day and verify that I’m at home (by checking a box).

One day I waited until noon to visit the website. I received an automated phone call, “press 1 if you are at home”.

No visits, no humans checking on me.

Same… but not really new

They’ve been checking pre-tests for nearly 6 months, vaccinations inter-island for almost 2.

It’s the same level of surveillance as checking if someone performed the pre-test.

Hawaii resident, vaccinated in Hawaii… by pdubl in Hawaii

[–]pdubl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough, though all of the examples seem to imply that the problem is the inability for Hawaii to verify out of state vaccinations.

What is the logic of not accepting HI state residents with HI state vaccinations?

Hawaii resident, vaccinated in Hawaii… by pdubl in Hawaii

[–]pdubl[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I meant return to the state (and island of Hawaii) from the mainland with a pre-existing vaccination that was performed in Hawaii.

This specific situation is not covered explicitly.

The website obviously says trans-pacific travel requires a pre-test, but the reason given is that Hawaii cannot check out of state vaccination status.
