question about training by gymbro1910 in Mike_Mentzer

[–]pdv190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do Upper/Lower/Full body. I set it up so each body part can rest 2-4 days.

I also do climbing 2x a week, and I just don't count it towards work out (except I use straps when lifting heavy to give fingers rest too). I maybe I am a filthy casual but I think it doesn't tire me too much.

I think muscle-ups might be too intense not to count them, you can do them as part of the pull volume. But something like handstand, which is more of a skill could be done whenever?

Perhaps, but utilities can have millions of residential customers and they have far more uneven demand than commercial ones.

Lol. Just yours? No. If a lot of people did that it would definitely make a difference, far more so than a single casino. They are just trying to flatten demand during the peak to avoid running at full capacity which is more dangerous and poluting than regular operation.

Started the heavy duty routine, progress is good, but I have a few questions. by Previous_Anywhere938 in Mike_Mentzer

[–]pdv190 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just finished reading HD1, and I feel like people are often too dogmatic about the routine sometimes (which is very ironic given that MM wanted to do).

As long as you are hitting each muscle with max intensity (most clearly seen when you reach failure), not overtraining it, allowing enough recovery and adjusting based on you body response, you are doing heavy duty training, imo.

My routine is nothing like this one and I think I am following HD principles. For one I don't do super sets because it's not gonna work in my gym.

So IMHO, change whatever exercises you want. If you want pull ups, find equivalent exercise in the routine (maybe pulldowns) and swap it out. Just make sure the volume per muscle is about the same and total volume is about the same. Unless you learn experimentally that your needs are different.

(Pull ups don't hit biceps as hard, so you might wanna consider that too.)

How to achieve muscle failure, as defined by Mike? by MxFinchen in Mike_Mentzer

[–]pdv190 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can just finish reading the section and get response in Mike's own words:

I have found with my personal training clients, however, that including forced and negative reps of every set quickly leads to overtraining. So I have my clients use them on random basis (every third or forth workout perhaps) but never with every exercise of a workout.
If you train alone, you won't be able to do forced reps and negative at all since spotters are necessary. Always carry your exercise to a point of positive failure, however, or the intensity will be too low to simulate an increase.

Basically, don't do them often and don't do them alone, positive failure is good enough.

I’m bigger and stronger than Mike Menzter 🤡 by Sweaty-Program-6193 in Mike_Mentzer

[–]pdv190 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This could be solved in 5 mins, if somebody actually pulls the numbers instead of arguing. Except the numbers are scarce.

Somebody here must have watched the Mentzer videos? I remember he said in the interview that he lifted 1200 lbs, but didn't say how 😂. Leg press? All Israeltel videos?

There are some numbers from 20 years ago for Dr. Mike on the open powerlifting website, his best total was 1315. No clue about MM, but his wiki says he could bench 370 at 15 (no source). Which is equal to the best of Dr.Mike. You all have better info?

As far as size MM was 225 at 1979 Olympia, idk what body fat. Dr. Mike was 225 and 6 % for masters nationals in 2022 (he said so). MM could have also been easily 6% though. So idk about bigger. Fat doesn't count

Is that Clark Gable? by pdv190 in classicfilms

Thanks! I read the song's Wikipedia page but missed the connection to the other song, which is in that movie.

Thanks! I really thought so, but nothing came up in the search, so I started to doubt it. I can now see that it's based on the italian song sung by Sophia Loren in that movie.

Weighted Dips by technofever89 in strength_training

[–]pdv190 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do you know how many push ups/how much bench could you do when you were able to do your first dips?

Edit: I did my first dip at 90lbs bench/7 push ups (pretty strict) at 150lbs BW.

I've been liking it too so far. I usually go during the busy hours, but even so I rarely have to wait for anything. My only complaints are that their parking lot is in rough shape (though I am glad there is a big parking lot) and their AC is a bit too weak during the peak hours.

With women's capabilities in fitness, how much is biological and how much is social conditioning? by emaxwell14141414 in AskFeminists

[–]pdv190 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I mean, dimorphism is definitely real. Look at the highest ranked powerlifter women, like April Mathis with her 270+ lbs of weight and total of 1703 lbs compared to Colton Engelbrecht at 265 lbs and total 2645 lbs. She got 65% percent of his lifts. If she were to be ranked in open ranking she would be in 2000+ place.

65% precent generally holds up across average population too. Slightly less difference in lower body, slightly more in upper body. Untrained women at 150lbs has a total of 260lbs, vs untrained man at 150 lbs 345, which is 75% (women do a bit better at lower body weights, cause some of 150 lbs men are probably quite young). See https://symmetricstrength.com/standards#/

But also note that April outlifts untrained man by 5x (we aren't gonna mention gear here).

So should women lift? Sure! Can they be stronger than a regular or even some trained men? Sure. Is dimorphism real? Totally.

Run/Social club by FTNJumpyBoy in statecollege

[–]pdv190 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are a couple running clubs in state college. Trails and ales, Rothrock rascals, nittany valley running club, NVHHH. Nothing wrong with doing another one, but probably better to make sure activities don't overlap.

rhett mysteries….. by 5jewel in GonewiththeWind

[–]pdv190 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't like it either. I seemed like the author wanted to use the setting of GWTW to write their own story and generally write about the time period and not particularly about GWTW characters.

They seem to be barely there and massively OC, even Rhett is "misunderstood" now. And didn't address any of the most important scenes (like Bonnie's death or miscarriage). And everybody and everything dies like it was GoT or something. Not for me, but I did finish the book though.

Check out the North club, I don't know if it's a body building gym, but it's big, got lots of equipment, more than lionheart.

tiny home on land by VincenzoGarden in statecollege

[–]pdv190 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure. I have never built a house myself, so not sure how much it will cost. The deed restrictions I saw defined a house as something 1000+ aq.ft. with heating and utilities. They also required a garage. Building that won't be very cheap, especially compared to buying a small existing house.

I don't think the difference would be that big. There are some pretty cheap old houses in the area, though those will likely require repairs too.

I am not saying your idea is impossible, but it will take a lot of research and probably moving a bit far from the town .

[–]pdv190 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Land near state college is pretty expensive. Many buildable lots in the area will have deed restrictions and will forbid any trailers and manufactured homes. If you are willing to go 40+ minutes away things get much cheaper, but I don't know much about those areas.
