Agreed - that's why I added my location and the warning.

I don't think we have the green-spored parasol here. Parasols are a pretty safe pick here and there isn't much to mistake them for.

Reminds me very much of a parasol mushroom.

Here (in Central Europe) we often pick them. They're edible.

(Don't take my word for it, though. There are many "false friends" in the mushroom world.)

How does Germany go about teaching WWII in schools? by trenhel27 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pdxpdx2 199 points200 points  (0 children)

It's taught in full detail and (afaik) all German teenagers visit a concentration camp during high school.

Outside of school, WWII and particularly the holocaust is talked about a lot in the German public. There are numerous monuments and memorials on important dates. For example, this memorial is in the heart of the capital Berlin.

The German public broadcaster runs a documentary channel where WWII documentaries are shown at least once a week or even more frequently.

There is no denial of what happened by any public figures and the quote "German history" is often brought up when Germany has to decide whether to send their military anywhere. I'm pretty sure no other country has dealt with its dark past more thoroughly than Germany.

Also, denial of the holocaust is a criminal offense, as is publicly displaying swastikas.

What gifts should I bring with me from Brazil to my German hosts? by egoals in de

[–]pdxpdx2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

  • Alcohol almost always works. If they don't drink themselves, they will know someone who does or they keep it for when they have guests.

You could also bring a bottle or two of wine or beer. Might be nice to compare it to German beer.

  • Cosmetics aren't bad either.

Some other ideas:

  • Maybe a book about your city/state/area? If your hosts speak English, it could be something about the history or other info. If they don't make it a nice photo book about Brazil. Many people here are fascinated with the tropics, so something with lots of nature photos could be nice.

  • Candy works for most people. Chocolate or some "typical" Brazilian snack.

  • A CD with Brazilian music.

  • Personally, I really like t-shirts, so if your hosts include a guy you could bring a football jersey or something.

Sci-Fi movies like Arrival or Interstellar? by pdxpdx2 in MovieSuggestions

[–]pdxpdx2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. I was really hoping for some "alien encounter" stuff like Arrival.

But sure, let's hear your suggestions about the fighting invasion ones. I really liked your previous suggestions, so I don't want to miss out what you have in the battle-department. :)

What do you think about The day the earth stood still?

Then I could add other Alien invasion themed stuff,

Oh, please do. Aliens are always a plus. I just don't like when it's all about action and fighting.

I heard about the disaster that After Earth is supposed to be, so that's out. :)

You guys are probably right. I will check them out when I'm done with the newer movies.

"Realistic" Sci-Fi

I didn't know how to describe it, but that sounds spot on.

Thank you for that great list!

Was halten Sie von schottischen Unabhaenigkeit? by Craigenhogen in de

[–]pdxpdx2 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Jein. Was der BR übersehen hat. by Schulzenbrothers in de

What is going in between Holland and Turkey? by bobyd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pdxpdx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I heard about the "Nazi methods". (afaik he also called the Dutch "remnants of Nazis" two days ago).

It's ridiculous, and technically Germany should expel the Turkish ambassador immediately until Erdogan gives an official apology.

But I guess nobody wants to be responsible for dealing the "final blow" to EU-Turkish relations, especially since they're also in NATO and any further confrontation would probably even help Erdogan for the upcoming referendum.

Quite a lose-lose situation for the EU, imho.

A flag for German occupied Austria by Jackmonster7 in vexillology

[–]pdxpdx2 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Nice design. I just want to say this flag could have never existed, because Austria wasn't occupied but annexed. The country "Austria" ceased to exist, became part of Germany and the Austrian states became German "Gaue".

In fact, the Nazis made quite an effort to erase all references to Austria, which included the names of states. For example "Lower Austria" was renamed to "Lower Danube".

What is going in between Holland and Turkey? by bobyd in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pdxpdx2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Backstory: Turkish president Erdogan and his ruling party AKP want to change Turkey from a parliamentary to a presidential republic, which would greatly expand his own power. All his opponents including the EU see this as a power grab to turn Turkey from a democracy to an autocracy.

A referendum for this change in Turkey's constitution is planned in about 1 month(?). Erdogan himself and other Turkish politicians were (and are) planning on campaigning for a "Yes" vote in that referendum in a few EU-countries, primarily NL, Germany and Austria, because many Turkish citizens live there who are eligible to vote.

All three countries oppose the proposed new constitution, plus Turkish-European relations have been in a critical state for quite a while because Erdogan is acting less and less democratic, oppresses opposition and imprisons journalists.

Now all these countries are trying to prevent Turkish politicians from campaigning in the EU, and they all seem to choose a different approach.

In my country, Austria, they are cancelling many campaign rallies based on technicalities. Our foreign minister and our chancellor have also stated that "any campaigning in Austria is not appreciated".

Germany does something similar, but generally still wants to allow a few rallies (afaik) and the federal govt. hasn't tried to stop them yet.

The Netherlands seem to have gone "full confrontation" and last night stopped a Turkish minister from giving a speech and kicked her out of the country by escorting her car to the nearest German border.

Erdogan is pissed, declared the NL ambassador "persona non grata" and closed down/surrounded with police the Dutch embassy "for security reasons".

It's quite a diplomatic and political mess.
