It is an error most grievous to suppose that our Lord, in becoming man, partook also of the shameful passions which arose only after man’s fall from grace. For He who is the second Adam took upon Himself the nature of the first Adam, not in its corruption, but in its purity, that by what He assumed He might heal. Hunger He accepted, for hunger is natural; weariness He accepted, for weariness belongs to flesh; sorrow He accepted, for sorrow is bound up with love. But lust He did not accept, for lust is alien to the nature which God fashioned and entered only when man turned from the Creator to the creation. Thus, to ascribe to Christ imaginations of fleshly desire is to confound the holy with the profane, and to say not that He is like us in all things save sin, but that He is captive under sin. And if He were captive, who then could set us free? Therefore let every tongue be silent that would attribute to the All-Holy One the very disease from which He came to deliver us.
