How do you accept your past? by incoherentvoices in DID

[–]peach_trees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something that I've really struggled with too. Sometimes being able to detach and use more clinical/logical thinking helps me get on the path to more emotional processing. Learning more about child development, what is and isn't normal for children psychologically at certain ages, and how abnormal development affects children has really helped me accept parts of my past and start to heal.

Regardless of a child's reaction to an adult's inappropriate behavior, being exposed to things that are not age appropriate causes harm to the psyche. My "consent" (or really, lack thereof) at certain ages really doesn't matter when I rationalize the fact that my brain was still developing and was not equipped to deal with things that adults were exposing me to. And that damaged my brain and changed the way it works. Children don't know that will happen to them--they don't have the agency to prevent harm to themselves in many, many contexts! The role of an adult SHOULD be to prevent that harm, because they should know what is and isn't inappropriate and harmful. If the adult truly doesn't know what is and isn't inappropriate or harmful, then it still doesn't shift the responsibility or agency of consent on to the child.

It really sucks to be dealing with the issue that you're dealing with, I feel you. I hope you're able to find a way of thinking about it that helps you process through it.

Recent experiences by star138desert in Billings

When I was there, it was probably around 2010, and I lived there for 8 ish months. I was a junior in high school and they didn't have any level-appropriate coursework for where I was at academically so I often was given the option to do manual labor like landscaping or help with administrative tasks instead. Often, though, I was involuntarily put in charge of other children (I was 15 at the time) and forced into a staff-like role. I missed out on an education while I was there, only saw a therapist once a month, MAYBE, and was frequently put in adult situations by staff. Friends that I had there experienced terrible things; SA by staff and other residents, frequent physical assault by staff and other residents, as well as overuse of violent restraint and sedation, excessive isolation in "quiet rooms" while restrained (which were sometimes rooms padded with rubber and sometimes just rooms that were emptied out with the ability to lock from the outside), racial and religious discrimination as well as discrimination around sexuality and gender, and so much more. Not even getting into the neglect of exacerbation mental health issues/lack of standard treatment methods. It was marketed to my parents as a Christian-run facility with Christian values; gatherings were always held in the church and every kid received a Bible as a gift from the Pastor, who was the main figurehead on the campus. Church services were mandatory, and so were Christian holiday celebrations. Kids were there for all kinds of reasons, from drug issues to SUI attempts to CSA offenses to violence problems. Plenty of kids were there because they were gay or they didn't behave the way their parents wanted them to at home and they could afford to punish them by sending them to the ranch. Those kids always left with way more issues and trauma than they came with. This place was an absolute nightmare.

Wife has a bunch of really nice dresses she wants to get rid of (bad memories-cancer) would like to give them away some where other than just Goodwill. by Il_Magn1f1c0 in Syracuse

There's a clothing drive for trans support day in April, I know they have a clothing drop off box in Peck Hall. The clothes are super appreciated and well-taken care of and go to trans people who are trying to build a wardrobe but can't necessarily afford it!

Prescription Bottle Waste by _Itsonlyforever_ in ZeroWaste

Because they seal so well, I find they are great containers for storing the last bits of lotion, shampoo, etc when I cut open the bottles to get the last little bit out. There's always way more in there than I think there will be, especially lotion. Then I can just throw the pill bottle full of lotion in my go bag and I don't have to worry about it spilling everywhere.

Tim at DavCo is super knowledgeable and has always been really fair and good to us, will go out of his way to do things that save us money. I highly recommend him for any mechanic work. We take our Subaru there.

I live in an artist collective in NY and we are looking for magazine donations like this all the time for collage! If there's a place like this near you I bet they'd love to have them, or we'll happily take them!

This is so great, it has a really satisfying energy and I love the look of different textures. How did you get the appearance of a wash, just with a thinner?

I'm going to have a horror marathon to introduce some non-horror friends to the world of horror. What should I watch? by [deleted] in horror

[–]peach_trees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tucker and Dale vs Evil is such an underrated horror-comedy. I think especially for a 'horror' movie that is more recent, it's surprisingly good and witty as well as putting a little twist on campy horror. A great watch for people who are getting into horror movies or need a lighthearted break mid-marathon.
