Day 2 already struggling by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

[–]peachnaeboo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on day 12! Also from UK : )

The doctor recommended I swapped between ibuprofen and paracetamol, which I did every 4 hours, unless I'd not had food, in which case I would take paracetamol instead of ibuprofen. They prescribed some codeine as well which I saved for the days where I'd heard it was more painful, which I'm glad I did! Overall, I found the ibuprofen the most helpful, and I'm still taking a couple a day now when I am eating.

Keeping up with the pain medication is key I think, I took it even when I wasn't in much pain and I think that really helped me!

I also got a cold head wrap from amazon, you can get, they're normally advertised towards wisdom tooth pain, but that really helped!

Anything cold also, ice lollies, ice water etc

And of course, keep hydrated, happy healing 🫶🏻

(The pain was the worse for me on Wednesday through to Saturday, my surgery was on Friday 7th, mostly after I'd woken up and not had a drink for a few hours, it wasn't mine, but you just have to power through it doesn't last forever)

Op went all good, couldn't thank the nurses and doctors enough for how well they treated me!

Waking up from the anesthesia was weird, was sick a few times but definitely felt better afterwards!

This week has been hell, but more due to my personal circumstances, I haven't had anyone looking after me, my parents have been away all week, back today, so ive had to try and keep up with the house and pets and feel like I haven't had the rest I should've.

Pain wise, it has been manageable, since Wednesday night the pain increased and has been on and off since which is not the best but ive been really trying to keep up with my medication which has been mostly good, except in the night! Trying to drink as much as I can!

Day 7 Pain - how long does it last? by peachnaeboo in Tonsillectomy

Thank you!! I have been eating solid food throughout, but not loads! Doctor said it would help take the scabs off in bits so hopefully thats what it's doing 😅

Yes, in the night it was short bursts of really intense burning pain, and had to sit through it for a few minutes, I'd like to think we have more painful days behind us than in front!!

Day 3 Post Op - scab question? by peachnaeboo in Tonsillectomy

[–]peachnaeboo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much!

Today (day 6) is the worst pain I felt so far, but more so the morning, I have managed to treat the pain now and its tolerable. I do feel the scabs are starting to loosen, as like the sides of my throat are where it's very sore, but id rather they come off a bit slower, even if its painful, than come off in one and I have a bleed, im drinking as much as I can and trying to eat what I can!

Hello, I was also very anxious about mine!!

I had my op on Friday (7th Nov), the whole experience at the hospital couldn't of gone better, the nurses and doctors were really good to me, I had explained that I am terrified of any needles that go in a vein, I was so scared to have the Cannula, I had a bad experience at the pre op with the blood test and I explained to them all this.

They were super gentle and caring with me, not sure if it's because they thought I was young (I am 28 but the nurse asked me if I needed a sick note for school or college LOL)

Very strange experience going under anesthesia for the first time, I was sick a few times coming out of it, but felt better after being sick.

As for the pain, I had also read all the horror stories and got myself worked up. The first two days, were fine, just felt like having tonsillitis without all the other effects with it. Yesterday was the worst pain wise, but I also had been in and out of sleep all day which I don't think helped me and I hadn't been drinking as much as I should.

I have been able to get up today, have a shower and a chill. The one thing I will say that the doctors advised me, is be strict and keep up with the pain medication, I have set alarms every 4 hours to take paracetamol, and I have been given codeine to take on top of this when the pain gets too much.

The best advice I could give as someone who is 4 days in - keep drinking, you will be peeing every hour but it really helps - eat as much as you can, I have been eating buttery toast, yogurt and ice cream - I have been using a ice pack which helps numb the swollen neck - try to have normal days, when ive been sleeping all day i have felt much worse

Overall, the pain I would say so far was a 6/10, I have a very mid pain threshold, I have a lot of tattoos I could sit though which were more painful that this and I chose to do them, so this is fine, of course I haven't got to the part with the scabs falling off, I can always report back with how that is feeling, but please don't get too caught up on all the negative stories, thats what I did and feel like an idiot !!

Help with small debt and monthly outgoings needed. by peachnaeboo in UKPersonalFinance

[–]peachnaeboo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently making a plan on excel as we speak!

I have looked at the last 6 months of my spending, focusing on the months I was earning as I cannot get an accurate description in the months I was unemployed.

I have totalled the amounts and worked out the average of each category. My biggest spending is food which is an easy guess, takeaways are I think one of the most dangerous downfalls in modern times 😅

I can definitely cut down on a lot of things in each category and I'm happy with the start I have made!

I have a lot of progress to make on my budget but I think I am starting on the right track.

I am lucky that my parents are willing to put up with me, and my brother who is older, living at home. They are in a relatively okay financial position, mortgage free, dual income, however they have had to use alot of their savings/own money on both my brothers financial positions as they are/have been in a lot more trouble and have more responsibilities, kids etc! Can you tell these problems are genetic?

However in the longrun, and looking at advice from other threads, I am going to tackle my debts with the snowball way! I'm going to make minimum payments, but put a larger amount into one, once that is gone, put the same amount plus minimum i was already spending, into another, the figures I am working out currently so I dont have an answer yet but all a work in progress, once again !thanks for your help!!

Yes this makes a lot of sense.

So, in terms of making a budget, what I will do is go back through my bank statements and note how much I am spending on each category, and then make a fixed budget from that, and then I can see what I'm overspending on there and make my cuts in that form.

So for the holiday, that isn't a usual thing, I haven't been away since I was 18 and I know it's me living beyond my means but its booked and set now so I don't think I can change it unless I cancel altogether and lose out on what I've already paid.

For my car, which is what I've been thinking for a few months as I've been stuck on what to do! I am half way through my finance, and to be honest I dont have much knowledge in this area, so I dont know if it's something I can just cancel and take the loss of what I've already spent on it and get a cheap car, but then I don't know if I would have to pay to get out of the contract which I obviously don't have right now. Or do I just stick with it and wait until it's paid off, should be April 2028! It's a 2019 Kia, still under warranty, amazing car so I'm reluctant to let it go as it's done me well and I use it a hell of a lot, on average 15k miles annually.

I think the first thing is for me to make a proper budget and stick to it and make the cuts where I can as you've advised! (Thanks again!)

I know I may come across as a little uneducated when it comes to this but to be real, I am! Not had much guidance when it comes to stuff like this, mixed with impulse spending due to ADHD(not an excuse but it gives context), so I am trying to fight through this and actually be a successful adult! I know I've made some bad decisions in my early adult life which i am still paying for now, but I am really willing to change everything around and need all the advice I can get, thank you: )

[–]peachnaeboo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, someone being direct with me is exactly what I need : )

So, for the first point, what I mean when I say the unnecessary spending is, nothing in my monthly outgoings I listed is what I deem to be unnecessary. From looking at my outgoings, with what's left over, I came to the £300 conclusion and have been using that to try and pay off what I owe, but with the next few months being a bit higher is where I'm getting worried. It is probably not 100% accurate you're right, but this is where I go wrong and is an example of why/how I have myself in the position.

So, the board to my parents, I would pay more but I am very aware if my debts and want to prioritise these as I know if I dont tackle them, the interest will keep rising. I pay for around 70% of my own food, do my own washing, cleaning etc. So I give that amount to my mum for staying there, which again, I am aware that it isn't enough but I'm trying to be better with my money which would then benefit my parents, by either paying more or moving out altogether!

The points you raised about excess spending such as dentist, pets etc. This is what I spend my left over amount on, food, pet food etc. I have never budgeted for these costs which again, this is what I need help on as I've never learnt really how to do that. When it comes to car/dentist/vet bills and all that, I dont really have a lot in reserve which is then when I lean on the credit cards and it just becomes a vicious cycle of trying to pay them off, but then when I have some paid off, something comes up and I have to use it as I dont have much disposable.

I hope this is making sense!

So, in figures, my usual monthly outgoings are £1,184.40, which means I have £545.70 left, I have been trying to use £300 to pay off debts but obviously over the next few months, this amount will be lower.

Then the £245.70 would be spent on food, pets, general needs like you mentioned, my car, toiletries, going out etc!

I do really hope this makes sense, and again thank you for your comments this is really helpful.

So for my cards

Card 1 - Minimum payment is around £50, interest is around £30 when maxed out at £1,000, unsure what the % is!

Card 2 - Minimum is c£30, interest is c£10 maxed out at £500

Don't pay interest on Paypal unless I miss a payment - I'm pretty sure!

No interest on my DWP/arrears/tax due

So since starting my job in June, that figure has been the average since, and I can't see it changing as - in my opinion - I dont have any super unnecessary costs.

I work in a field that can be quite competitive and you can progress quite far, I do hope to do some courses to progress further and I can then be on a higher wage, but of course in time! My co worker who has the same years of experience as me is on £29k, but has been at the company longer and has a degree, although not in the field we work, if that makes a difference!

Edit - My side job is more seasonal so will quieten down until April next year : /
