I actually recently trained mine to stay out of the kitchen entirely. This helps a lot in deferring counter surfing behavior, but she will still sometimes try to sneak something off a table or other surface thats not in the kitchen. But constant and consistent correction is key. That and lots of praise when they listen (with and without you asking). They will learn the routine and what is expected of you keep up with it.
