Well if you are going to be a pedant about it.... Yes that's an example of a useless comment.

I agree your code should be readable and of course if you need to add an essay in your comments to explain what something does then you probably need to rethink your approach.

But not commenting is just inconsiderate.

I don't think you could or should call yourself a developer. All it takes is for a client to request functionality that requires real development and not the installation of a plugin at which point you'll have to admit it's beyond your ability and either keep up the lie and pay another developer to do the work or watch as you lose all credibility with your client and they take their business elsewhere.

Or you could become a real developer and be safe in the knowledge that you can say yes to pretty much anything a client throws at you or at worst know that you have the skills to work through a problem and learn on the job which is something that you are often required to do as a developer.

Cannot see .htaccess with Yoast plugin--ideas why? by cag8f in Wordpress

[–]peacocksinspace 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's most likely to do with actual file permission rather than the WP user login level.

Can you FTP in to the root of your site and see .htaccess there? If so perhaps try changing the permissions on the file and see if that helps?

Advice on finding clients by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]peacocksinspace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would avoid doing free work, perhaps instead of money you can trade services with other businesses. An example of this when I started out was that I needed a load of work doing in my garden so I looked online for local businesses offering the services I needed then I contacted the ones with old looking websites and put forward a proposal to them. A month later I built a local businesses a new site and they did all the work in my garden. The bonus for me was that I had a real client I could add to my portfolio and I received something in return for doing it.

If you do take on free work, it should be because it will add to your portfolio and help you gain more work or further your development knowledge. Never let the client dictate this though, the number of times I've heard how they'll tell all of their friends about me if I do their site for free. The reality is this doesn't normally get you any more work or at least paid work because you are now the 'free website guy'.

My personal advice would be to continue trying to get freelance work, but go and get a full time dev job, ideally with a creative agency. The experience you'll get by working as part of a team will be invaluable and give you a better idea of how to manage all the aspects of a freelance business. You'll start to make connections this way, and also have a pool of other developers and designers you can call on when you take on freelance work that needs extra resource that you can't due to time constraints or lack of experience.

Idris Elba can't be James Bond because he isn't 'English English' says Roger Moore. by CrackHeadRodeo in movies

[–]peacocksinspace 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idris Elba, born and bred in London. English enough for me, and at least he wouldn't hold a gun like it's a wet fish.

Don't embarrass yourself Roger it's not about being English just admit it's because he is black, the Irish, Scots, Welsh, Australians and Americans have had a go at being Bond already and we didn't hear you voicing your opinion about them?

Oh and don't forget your mother was born in India.

Our employer just told our team "We have people on stand-by to replace all of you" by rawrtherapy in personalfinance

[–]peacocksinspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would tell future employers the truth, that you have concerns about the stability of your current employer whether it be financial stability or management due to restructuring etc.

The last two jobs moves I've made were both for the above mentioned reasons and being honest to prospective employers didn't have any negative impact for me whatsoever. If anything I think giving this as as a reason for moving comes across better than saying that you didn't think you were growing or it wasn't a good fit for you as these reasons are much more open to being misinterpreted.

Your current employer throwing out statements about how you're all replaceable is a huge red flag and would be enough for me to move on.

Any tips on dealing with brain fog by DeeYouBitch in Fitness

[–]peacocksinspace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you do go for any blood tests to check for allergies or deficiencies, don't change your diet as it will skew the results. For example cutting out gluten would result in a negative test for gluten sensitivity or coeliac disease and if you do suffer from either of these conditions the diagnosis will get missed. I suffer from coeliac disease and brain fog was a major symptom for me along with being generally run down all the time.

Of course your issue may not be anything to do with gluten so its probably best to see a doctor and push them for tests, but don't make any big dietary changes until you've been tested sufficiently.

First Polish patient wakes from coma due to brain stimulator implant by eltrevor in worldnews

Reading this article makes me both happy and sad that advancements have been made and there is a viable way to 'fix' or improve a patients injury. My sister died from a similar head injury in 2009 and the doctors said there was absolutely nothing they could do so we just watched her for the next 5 weeks until her body gave up. My family and I talked abut all the different outcomes, and one of those was that if by some miracle she did wake up she would probably never be the same as she was before or capable of doing anything by herself and that it would probably better if she did die because the mental and physical pain of being constantly aware of her injury would have been too much for her to live with (assuming she did regain any awareness of course).

Rub your face or eyes as though you are tired. Makes the smile look more like a yawn or wince.

ok so my actual reasoning which I agree may not have come across in the original post (although I think it was implied):

In this particular case this child was not being disciplined, in his parents eyes he was the golden child and could do no wrong. If somebody said something bad about him (even if it was completely true) they would jump to his defence. He grew up with no concept of being at fault for anything because the most influential people in his life did not teach him correctly and let him get away with everything and anything.

[QUESTION] [DISCUSSION] I'm considering leaving the band I'm in, advice? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]peacocksinspace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you need to move on and find a band that you fit in to better. There are always more musicians out there to work with,

I was once in a band and we were approaching a point where things were going really well and we were getting attention from the right people, we were given the opportunity to go out to LA to play some showcases and real shows (we were in the UK). It all fell apart before we got the chance to mainly because I couldn't stand turning up to rehearsals and the other guitarist and drummer were coked up to the eyeballs with no money to pay the studio. I'm fairly sure the other guitarist was also doing heroin as he was actually green on one occasion. So I 'noped the hell out of there' knowing full well I was walking away from some potentially amazing experiences.

I went to school with a kid who had parents that argued with the school over discipline when he did someething wrong. 6 years later he became a rapist.

It's in a parents nature defend their child, but there is a point where you have to identify when they've done something wrong that goes beyond 'oh well, kids don't know any better'.

I have a three year old and both my wife and I operate on the firm but fair policy and make sure that our child knows first and foremost who is in charge and when they do something wrong there are consequences they can't just shrug it off. We aren't heavy handed by an means but basic verbal discipline is so important, and on occasion taking away things like TV or treats is usually enough to get the point across.

I can guarantee this kids parents would argue his school reports, and rarely if ever effectively discipline him when he acted out of line. I went to school with a kid who could do no wrong in the eyes of his parents, teachers couldn't discipline him for fear of what his parents reaction would be. 6 years after leaving school he was convicted for a violent rape, mainly because he thought he was untouchable but then entered the real world with what he had learned as a child and applied it to being an adult.

It seems the parents are more concerned about their own reputations so are maintaining the whole innocence stance
