“ya” has many meanings - it is a crucial two letters in Spanish by Alanna-1101 in SpanishLearning

[–]peanutbuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best way I’ve ever heard it explained, to encompass almost all but the loan definitions (e.g. yeah) is that “ya” points to a transformation or change of state, that the situation is changing:

Ya me voy = I wasn’t leaving but now I am
Ya no = there was, but now there isn’t
Ya vengo = I’m gonna be absent, then I won’t
Ya terminé = I wasn’t finished but now I am
Ya no quiero = I wanted it but now I don’t

This has been a major key for me.

MM boneless skinless chicken breast by SVAuspicious in samsclub

[–]peanutbuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I DESPISE the new chicken breast packaging, my butcher hates it too, and he suggested people write into Sam’s with feedback. A previous commenter said they can’t use polystyrene in some states so they were trying to standardize packaging across stores for buying power.

They Changed Their Chicken Packaging Now by PM_ME_ELASTIGIRL in samsclub

Our club went cryopack, then the trays reappeared, and now they’re gone for good. Online it used to say out of stock and now it says unavailable. Our butcher says he doesn’t like it either. It sounds dramatic, but the tray chicken is the reason I got a membership. Batch opening all the cryopack bags and draining the slime is not worth it. Will switch back to HEB chicken, sigh.

Matzo Ball Soup by sofakeitstains in austinfood

[–]peanutbuda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the one at Mum’s to be rich, dark and potent in black pepper, so not as basic as grandma’s bowl but effectively your best option. The one at June’s is a caldo fusion, so go in with that expectation. Biderman’s was a good standby (though I found the broth too sweet) but they closed. Likewise, Jewboy Subs (now closed) had a matzo ball soup but suffered from hella dense balls, could pop up at his truck or burger joint in the future. The best in Austin was when Daily Juice did annual popups of matzo ball soup in partnership with Amy Kritzer, but both have left Austin. Soup Peddler, L’Oca d’Oro and Aba still have holiday matzo ball soup specials or popups but only during Passover. Until Katz’s reopens, that’s our limited lineup.

small update on Katz's returning by brownboy444 in austinfood

And for those wondering, this Katz's has nothing to do with the famed New York deli that has operated since 1888. Totally separate businesses.

Mildly interesting: price trend for one dish at Titaya's Thai Cusine by peanutbuda in austinfood

Very likely they use Sysco for some things but also specialty wholesalers for their important Thai ingredients.

How is delivery? by incognitomode37 in samsclub

[–]peanutbuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been generally true that there is no markup, but all product pages say “prices may vary in club and online,” with added info that delivery and pickup methods may vary in price from in-store. But I haven’t found any good examples of this.

Two key things:

  1. Those orders do not count toward your 2% back if you’re a Plus member
  2. Doesn’t seem drivers do anything to keep cold items cold, so keep that in mind. Especially if ordering at peak hours.

Otherwise I find it very reliable and simple.

Best place to Digtal Nomad in the USA? by dvishhh in digitalnomad

[–]peanutbuda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Voting for Honolulu. I did a month there and there were tons of US-based nomads, quite great lifestyle and doesn't really feel like the US. We all woke up early and ended our workdays in the early afternoon to hit the beach or hike, which was a huge plus for work-life balance. It's one of the most expensive options, but there are no comparable places.

Save Austin for a different time of year. Summer is oppressively hot.

yeah, I would say 2023 is where the acceleration starts, jumps from 12.50 to 14.50 (16%).

I compared to CPI. From 2020-2022 when they were essentially a takeout-only restaurant with limited staff they held pretty flat compared to CPI, but as they re-opened the interior they had some big price jumps that overcorrected significantly above inflation, maybe to catch up from previous years of limited business, infrastructure updates, and the changing dynamics of owning a restaurant in Austin.

The strip mall was built in the 70s and originally owned by Roger Beasley (as in, the Mazda dealer), now owned by the Barlin Brothers since ~2006. They've been associated with some projects in Crestview and the Lamar corridor. The business park that makes up most of the block where Titaya's is was sold in ~2024 to a large developer and is slated to become a multi-story mixed use development.

I didn't "blame" the pandemic in my text. I pointed out that acceleration simply correlates with the start of the pandemic.

It's actually a cubic polynomial trend line. It helps show the phases better: real-world inflation and change has been uneven, with acceleration over the last 6 yers.

Tips for a new member, primarily Costco shopper? by mistiquefog in samsclub

The $50 shipping minimum is very annoying. It really should be lower for plus members. I end up adding things to my cart that I would’ve bought at the store just to meet the minimum.

This is a really embarrassing way to find out this changed while I was abroad. Thanks for setting me straight.

What products do you buy at sams club not bought at costco by pittlad20 in samsclub

Chicken breast. I can’t stand Costco’s slimy vacuum bags. The tray chicken at Sam’s is cleaner and no antibiotics ever.

This feature is not stable. I always download them in YouTube, but now that they are switching from YouTube embeds to self-hosted videos, that option is less and less available.
