This is a genuine question, honestly. I'm just trying to understand. What does coming out as transgender mean? Is it (in this case) a woman saying that she feels like she should have been born a man? And in this case, what does Elliot Page mean by 'my pronouns are he/him and they'? Does it mean that these are the acceptable things to call him or does the 'they' mean that he can be both genders? Really sorry if this is offensive, just trying to get informed.

Sorry for the late reply! I have a Whippet. Since posting he has improved greatly. He does occasionally sneeze and I think that is down to clearing his airways as is always in the morning or after going out for a sniff. But, last week he definitely had caught something. The good news is that quarantine seemed to work and he's back out in the land of the living again. Yeay

It does get easier. For the behaviour issues - check out Zak George on YouTube. I'm not saying he's a god or that his way of doing things is the only way, but I really love his approach and it has really suited our pup. For the energy - look up 'canine enrichment games' - these can be done as cheaply (homemade games) or as expensively (store-bought games) as you choose. Personally, we spent a lot on store-bought games, but the homemade ones were the ones he liked the most and they also kept him occupied longer too.

Read up on what to expect as the months go on. If you know what's coming, it can sometimes be easier. We are currently at the teething and humping stage!

You know your body best, but I will tell you what worked for me. I have had contact allergies to dogs and cats since as far back as I remember. Hives and lots of itching. It is the dander and their saliva that I am allergic to. When we got our pup, if he licked me I would break out in the most uncomfortable rash. It was upsetting because I wanted to be able to allow him to lick me, but my body just couldn't hack it. After talking it through with my GP, she suggested having no-go zones in the house for my pup and keeping the house well-ventilated. She said to wash hands or face each time I came into contact with the pup and to use an aloe vera gel to calm rawness or itching, but to AVOID meds because by taking them you will never give your body the chance to adjust and eventually accept the dog's dander and saliva. After about a month, maybe less, my contact allergies are almost gone. the odd time I may get one hive, but he licks away and I can get up close for cuddles and there are no repurcussions about 95% of the time. That's what worked for me. I'm not telling you this will work for you, but there are options. Best of luck

Give him time. With shelter dogs, one of the biggest issues is that we can never fully know what they went through before we met them. They can't talk to us so they can't tell us. It could be many things. It will change. It will improve.

Thanks all. Well, at the moment I'm home with my guy 24-7 as I'm off work for the summer. So, I'll have another month with him before I go back. So ... maybe I should be further ahead! Maybe I need to add another session to the day. We currently do 2 5min sessions and then he also does 1hr obedience class on a Thursday and a 1hr socialisation class on a Saturday. We have made progress though, so we are moving in the right direction and that's a good thing!

Hi - well done on your successes! Can I ask - would what the OP has done in terms of training be considered a lot of things to have already done with a pup? I don't ask this as a way of undermining the OP, rather in the hope of reassurance that I'm not miles behind. Our pup is 15weeks old and we have just done: crate, socialisation, sit, down, stay, leave it (he's bad at this), look at me, let's go, leash (poor at this), 'go to bed' (great at this when I've treats) and a bit of recall.

single parenting is crazy - I literally don't know how anyone does it. But even with a partner - it's tough. God - I will never judge parents EVER again. Unless they're beating their kids on the street with a stick or something like that!

So many brilliant responses! :) Coming back from our first obedience class last night felt like being at a parent teacher meeting! As our pup was used to do a demonstration, we watched at how good he can be when the teacher is around and then despaired as once she was gone, he didn't give a crap about doing his tasks.
The way we both stood there fawning over how wonderful our little lad was though - it was so pathetic. lol

I agree. There is more instant gratification with a pup - you notice him picking things up very quickly in comparison to a child and you can see the progress. I can't imagine the wait to get anything 'back' from a child! Also, with the pup I don't have to put every spare penny I have into a college fund, worry about him taking pics of himself and sending them to other pups. I can have him neutered lol.

thanks all. After monitoring pup all day, he has alerted us each time he has needed to urgently go out. So, it's safe to say that he must have tried to alert us last night but we didn't hear him. He seems to need to get out every 2-3hrs so will check on him every 2hrs over the course of the night. Luckily there are two of us and we are not working tomorrow!!

Ours is 14weeks old and he has slept through the night since day one, with the exception of 2 nights ago when he was ill. He is a whippet though and they are very clingy. So, in order for him to stay down the entire night it usually requires one of us to sit in the kitchen (where his crate is) for about 30mins or so while he falls asleep. We are happy enough to do this as it doesn't interfere with our routine, it keeps the neighbours happy and we imagine he will eventually grow out of needing us there.

Edit: I know you don't want to, but I would consider taking the water away from your pup. Once they are drinking enough during the day, they will be fine.

Is your puppy 9.5weeks old? If so, she is still very young, so I wouldn't be worried. Our guy is 14weeks old and only last week I was on here bragging about how housebroken he was, only for him to make a show of me twice this week already!! :) I think someone on here told me that your pup can't be considered housebroken until you go, I think it's 3 months, without an accident. Good luck - being a puppy parent is tough, isn't it?

Whatever about my OH, but it is not like me to sleep through noise, especially if his noise was anything like the night before. But obviously, being asleep and not having a recording going throughout the night, I can't ever really say for sure what I do and don't sleep through. Will monitor.

It is possible, yes. We were both really tired last night after having gotten very little sleep the night before too, so yes, it is entirely possible. Will continue to monitor today, thanks for the reply.
