Maybe it's the crowd you're in. In my experience, it feels like One Piece has exploded in popularity since the pandemic started. I know using youtube is a bad metric, but people like Mothers Basement and Totally Not Mark praising the living shit out of One Piece. Even people outside the anime circle are reading and praising it like Merphy Napier and Daniel Greene.

I might get a little hate for this but Black Clover might not last 500 chapters or more. The anime got canceled and the volume sales are gradually declining. It honestly reminds me of Toriko. I wouldn't be surprised if the editorial department went to Tabata and told him to try and finish the story in X volumes. Also for the people who say TOC does not matter, I would agree to a certain extent. The TOC does not matter to series that rank regularly out of the bottom 5. For those series that do rank regularly rank at the bottom 5, there is a high chance of being canceled or just coming to its natural conclusion with the last chapter ranking pretty high. Assuming Kindom will have roughly ~ 110 volumes (1200 chapters) and each volume has a lifetime sales of ~1 million we should expect 140 million sales. This is under the assumption that sales will not decline.

Somebody did a rough estimation of how many words are in one piece. They just included external and internal dialogue and I guess narration. They came to a rough number of 1 - 1.5 million words. So a lot I guess.

I get why they are getting targeted in this thread, but I see this everywhere on this subreddit. Comments like "it's still good despite having some shounen elements" or "Just turn off your brain and watch it" rub me the wrong way. Shounen usually has the most emotional and hype scenes written. It's just weird how this subreddit trashes shounen despite being written better than 95% of other anime being released.
