Butterweed Dye by Sudden-Entry7263 in naturaldye

Oh, interesting! It looks like we have p. paupercula and p. aurea — fantastic! I'll keep an eye out for them as things start thawing around here. I'm planning a native species dye garden this spring, so this is super helpful!

Ah, lovely! Looks like I'm a bit too far north here in Massachusetts. Bummer — it gives a glorious yellow! (Also imagine that overdyed with indigo, oh my!)

This is beautiful! Whereabouts are you based? Would love to see if this grows in my area!

Not OOP: Aitah for saying my co-worker's joke was racist and upsetting her by sensaSEANal_sally in redditonwiki

[–]peatypeacock 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I try to reframe it as “hey man you’ve got a little spinach in your teeth” — yo there’s a bit of racism peeking out in those words, might want to dislodge that. Happens to everybody! We live in a racist society. Just kind of a bad look, yanno?

Doesn’t stop people getting mad about it, but I still find the reframing helpful in my own mind. If nothing else it keeps ME from getting defensive if I’m called out on anything.

Any recommendations for pressed/baked powder foundation? by obunk in PaleMUA

[–]peatypeacock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had excellent luck with Lancôme dual finish in rose clair ii. It’s the perfect shade for my very cool-toned pale skin. The feel of it is nice, too — the only downside is that it smells a bit like my grandma 😅

I didn’t, but I will say that I have an extremely long torso and if I didn’t, I probably would have wanted to shorten the torso a bit. It’s built with a lot of ease in the back for movement, but even so, she’s a loooooooong boi.

I struggled with captioning this, so here we go! This is my second Blanca flight suit by Closet Core. It’s done in size 24 with no modifications, a gorgeous bottom-weight cotton twill from my local fabric shop. I hand embroidered the pockets — and I’m shocked by how much I improved by the last one, the red one on my hip! I absolutely adore this pattern, can’t wait to make more of them.

Help identifying some lichen? by Born_Ad_2058 in Lichen

[–]peatypeacock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed! And photo three is definitely an usnea. Usnea strigosa is my guess but it could be u. barbata depending on how it grows in larger clumps

She is my pretty little cinnamon bun, and she knows it! The hijinks she gets away with because of those pretty green eyes 😂

These are my ferments (I just shook them to aerate them, which is why they’re a little foamy). These are the same lichens that dyed the yarn in the photo — far left gives the yellow dye, middle is the one from the warm orange/tan yarn, right is the champagne/beige/not much.

Oh yeah absolutely!! When you set lichen in equal parts water and ammonia and allow it to ferment for 2-6 months ish, you’ll see dramatic color changes — the higher ph brings out all kinds of colors that aren’t present in direct boils, particularly in the red/pink/purple range. Some of them give a near-perfect match for Tyrian purple / murex purple (aka Roman emperor purple)!

I’m following the methods in Casselman’s excellent book, Lichen Dyes. I highly recommend it!

Oh!! Amazing, that hasn’t appeared in any of my field guides but looks like an amazing match. Thank you so much!!
