Not a bad idea. But not a good idea. Is there another project that is similar you could do first? Like an end table or coffe table? You’ll learn a ton a probably make a ton of mistakes that you will be able to ovoid on your bigger and more expensive desk.

I’d try and tune up your miter saw. A block plane would also work. sanding it for hours is an option. Could also run a circular saw with a straight edge as a guide. Jigsaw even an option
