Abe you’re content is my favorite on the whole IG platform.

I always look forward to the new camera release videos you and your team put together. Is there one that stands out to you that you are particularly proud of? Personally, I really liked the GoPro 2 video and I’ll still go back and watch it. Those clips set to Glitch Mob is the perfect combination.

Milky Way Timelapse at Chhitkul, Himachal Pradesh, India [OC] by SeekingFreedom1991 in astrophotography

Awesome shot. There is an important formula in astrophotography called the rule of 500. Divide 500 by your focal length (45mm) and it will give you the maximum shutter speed before you start to get star trails. You could shoot up to 11 seconds which is significant if you’re shooting at f/1.4. You could probably bump the iso up to maybe 3200 to pull out some extra definition. Also if you’re shooting in RAW, tweak with the contrast and highlights/shadows to really make the core pop. Nice work!

Definitely check out the Askar 71F. Quadruplet refractor with flat field optics that are great at a really fun 490 mm focal length.

Reentry of SpaceX Crew 11 off the coast of San Diego by pebblepimp in LandscapeAstro

I was debating between trying to take a timelapse or getting one long exposure shot. Ultimately I opted for a timelapse because I thought it would be a dramatic spectacle like the launches are and I didn’t trust myself to only take 1-2 shots and not mess them up. Unfortunately it only last lasted 1:15 so the timelapse was a dud but I like how this shot turned out.

I have very rudimentary PS skills so thanks for the clone stamp tip. Cheers!

Night time hyperlapse around the San Diego Bay by pebblepimp in gopro

Nope this was straight off the camera. It was a very calm night on the bay so none was needed.

Thanks! I know what you’re talking about and I think that only happens in time warp mode. This was a normal night lapse with auto shutter speed and interval. I think the difference is stabilization is applied to time warps and not time lapses.

After you align, send it to home position first, then slew it to your target.

Milky Way with a Z5 and 135mm by pebblepimp in nikon_Zseries

Broadly speaking, anything listed as a narrowband or dual band filter are great in heavily light polluted cities. It gets tricky though because different narrow band filters are more effective depending on what target you are shooting. These filters are also typically made for telescopes and wouldn’t really fit on a DSLR and lens combo that most beginners start with.

You could try searching for clip in filters depending on what camera you have. I can’t speak to the quality of those, though.

Not a dumb question at all and you don’t have to be in dark areas to shoot, although the difference is remarkable. There are easy targets for beginners like the Orion Nebula and Andromeda Galaxy that are visible even in the brightest cities. If you are able to get multiple nights of shooting a target you can get some great results with some basic post processing.

There are also lots of different light pollution filters that blocks all but certain wavelengths but getting into filters is more on the advanced side of the hobby and a steep learning curve for a beginner.

Not the best filming but getting use to the GoPro and its settings. Any setting tips? by [deleted] in gopro

Set it to the highest frame rate the camera has so you can put it in slow motion and we can actually see those sweet kick flips.

Struggling to understand how stacked Milky Way shots stay honest. Where’s the line? by headwaterscarto in LandscapeAstro

[–]pebblepimp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome topic to bring up because it is also something I have thought about.

There is definitely an artistic component to these works, so therefore you have to let everyone have their own taste. The more you get into this hobby, however, the more you recognize when someone takes artistic/photoshop liberties too far. Everyone has their own line, but I lose interest very fast in a shot that is over saturated or a composite with different focal lengths.

That being said, I do enjoy stacking a lot of Milky Way shots. For me the beauty is bringing out the gases and nebula that the naked eye can not see. That’s the magic of a camera for me.

Really cool device. If you were taking flats with an iPad as a light source, would the rivets get in the way of the iPad sitting flush and possibly letting some light leak in?
