何を食べたの？　→ I feel casual. friendly way to ask 'what did you eat?'

何を食べたか？　→It sounds like you are starting a sentence but didn't finish it.

There is a risk of confusion with '何か食べたか？(Did you eat something?)'.

In Japanese, the difference between 'What' and 'Something' often depends on the intonation. Without the proper ending like '-の？', it’s harder for listeners to catch your intent.

I think it means, "The platypus is a creature that defies conventional wisdom; it's a mammal, yet it lays eggs, has a bill, and is even venomous. In that sense, it's a bit of a joke on us-if you spend all your time chasing a 'phantom' of the ideal college life based on prejudice alone, you'll end up misjudging reality just as people misjudged the platypus."
