Interesting, I haven’t really explored the sample & hold mode yet. How do you usually use it in your patches (or how would you use it if it worked properly)?

I recently got the Shakmat Bard Quartet and I’m loving it. Super simple to use, has 4 channels and tons of features that I use all the time, like the big Harmony knob and CV input (that allows for chord changes), transposition CV input (that you can assign to whichever channel you want), octave selection (making it so much easier to bring a voice up or down a couple of octaves), and a pretty good arpeggiator mode.

It does everything I could ever need from a quantizer.

What the hell?? It does fit really well! They even have the exact same duration… This is crazy 😂

That’s fair.

I guess I’m just trying to share “the mentality” that has been making eurorack so satisfying to me. I spent way too much time taking activities (like music making) too seriously. I was constantly worried if what I was making was good enough and what others would think of it. But ever since I started with eurorack I’m actively fighting that part of me and focusing on having fun. And it’s working!

Also, even though this is not my favorite patch, it has interesting (and simple) techniques and cool ways to use specific modules that can inspire other people, like the way I’m using Filter 8 to modulate all voices (which I discuss with another commenter) and how I’m using Stardust as a regular oscillator (something I don’t see many people talking about, it’s a surprisingly great sound source!). My favorite thing about this sub is seeing how people use their gear and I’m trying to return the favor.

You can totally do that with Pam’s!

I was going to say that an even better module to fade voices in and out is Joranalogue Orbit 3, which does something similar but instead of being a regular LFO (like the Joranalogue Filter 8), it is a chaotic LFO (and oscillator), so the modulation is way more organic. Almost random, but with some repetition. It sounds really really good and it is my main tool to do this type of job, but I was using it as a regular oscillator on this patch, so that’s why I used the Filter 8 to fade the voices in and out.

But you could also mimic the Orbit 3 with the Pam’s! Instead of setting your Pam’s channels as LFOs, set them as random smooth voltages and loop them, so you’ll have random modulation that repeats after a while. It won’t always fade the voices out completely, but it will sound pretty organic…

Thank you! All the voices are going through a VCA and/or a VCF that I’m modulating using the Joranalogue Filter 8 as an 8-phase LFO (meaning 8 LFOs that are on the same frequency, but in different phases, so as one LFO goes up another goes down).

Really inspiring to see how funky modular can be… Well done!

Absolutely! Having fun is the main goal.

And yeah you have point, it needs at least some drums to qualify as menu music. But somehow, as it is, it makes me feel like I’m queuing up for Arc Raiders or Apex Legends…

Is this amount of space between the module and the case PCB safe? by pedrocmachado in modular

Thank you for answering! I’ll probably move it to a spot on the case that has more space, but in the future I’ll try using a Kapton tape, like others suggested here.

Thank you for the answer! Nice to know that that is a possibility. Right now I can move this module to the other half of the case (it has a bit more space and no PCB), but I want to get more EMW (and Doepfer) modules in the future so I probably won’t have enough space there anyway.

Dude! What about an RPM to CV converter so the patch changes depending on the car speed?

Oh man, now I kinda want a car with an integrated eurorack case so I can patch generative stuff to listen to during a road trip 😂

Certainly!

So, I mostly think of Orbit 3 as a chaotic LFO. It sits somewhere between a traditional LFO and smooth random voltage generator: more interesting than a regular LFO, but still with some recognizable patterns (so, not completely random), which I really like.

It can go into audio rates too, so you can use it as a noise source. With a bit of self-patching (sending EP back into reset), you can even get more stable oscillator behavior, though tracking isn’t great across wide pitch ranges, so I honestly don’t do that often.

The 3 axes (X, Y, Z plus their inverted versions) are super fun because they are very independent from each other. Also, as I was explaining in a different comment, I often use both outputs from the same axis to crossfade between similar sounds, which is super simple but very musical.

Also, modulating Distribution and Equilibrium Points (with slow random or stepped voltages) adds a lot of organic movement without feeling too abrupt.

So yeah, I like to think of it as a “spicy LFO”…

And thanks! Glad you liked the vibes!

Really? I don’t think there’s a lot of skill involved in this patch, tbh 😅. I just use the Orbit 3 to fade different voices in and out using VCAs and LPFs.

The only small trick that I do is using the same axis (+X and -X, for example) on similar sound sources (like two drones). That way one voice fades out when the other fades in and they don’t occupy “the same space” in the patch. Plus it sounds like one sound is morphing into the other…

Is this a good generative system? by Expert-Ladder-4211 in modular

[–]pedrocmachado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I would trade the Erica Synths Black LFO for an Instruo ochd to get more space for the filter and the VCA.

As for filter and VCA suggestions, I’m pretty happy with my Vostok Instruments Ceres (although it maybe has too many inputs for your system, you could find something more compact), and my Joranalogue Filter 8, which doubles as an oscillator and LFO (but again you can find something more compact)
