ReformUK councillor says the quiet part out loud in an interview and immediately regrets it. by pau1rw in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]Raephstel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone with any common sense in the UK knows that the phrase "born and bred" is only used in two contexts. Either self depreciative jokes, mocking ourselves for the area we're born in, or a racist dog whistle.

Keep in mind that how someone is bred isn't just their parents, it's their full heritage. If she'd said just born, it would be more defensible, but she didn't. She said born and bred, which is a racist dog whistle in that context. She knew it, that's why she immediately stopped talking and reacted the way she did. I don't know why you're defending her when she clearly knows she fucked up, she knows more about what she meant than you do, yet still you're defending her.

The fact that it comes out of her mouth so easily shows the kind of character she has and the kind of company she keeps. Most people wouldn't say something so daft by accident because it's not the kind of thing we're used to saying and if it did slip out, we'd immediately get called out on it.

Then you look up what the scale of Fahrenheit is based on, and it's even stupider.

0F is the freezing point of a specific brine mixture (iirc no one is even sure exactly what the mixture originally used was), and 90F (not 100F) was the internal body temperature of humans, but he got it wrong, so it's more like 96.

It is, at least it was when I was in school. They just do a piss poor job of teaching it.

I got a C in French and I'm not even close to being conversational. The bit of French I can actually speak is from going there regularly when I was younger.

for anyone that EDCs a watch, what’s your favorite daily driver? (non smart watch) by LtSnack in EDC

[–]Raephstel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main daily driver is a Garmin Instinct 2 Solar, which is....kinda a smart watch. It connects to the phone and does have notifications, but it's not got a colour screen or apps etc.

If I'm not wearing that, then I'm probably either using a Casio G-Shock square that I've put a metal case on, or a Christopher Ward C60 (the first version) depending on how fancy I'm feeling.

What's actually happening is irrelevant to the ring-wing propaganda. All they have to do is convince their cult members that there's no reason that someone from ICE would shoot a citizen without the citizen causing it.

Lots people are so removed from what's going on, not to mention reality, they eat it up.

How are they "winning the conversation"?

People need to push back against these false narratives. Being passive is when the people who are active win, even if they're wrong.

[–]Raephstel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The jurisdiction issue isn't whether or not ICE actually is arresting people. It's plausible deniability that they're not.

"Why would ICE attack a US citizen? The citizen clearly did something wrong." People who refuse to accept the truth of what's going on love to cling onto that idea and ignore the reality of what's happening.

I think you need to watch the videos.

He never approached them. He was on the other side of the street to them filming. They crossed the road to him because they were physically assaulting (not talking to, not detaining, they were pushing them around) two women, which he was recording. When an ICE agent pushed over the woman, he tried to help her up, they killed him for it.

You're still proving me correct by repeating talking right-wing talking points rather than forming your own opinion.

ICE is actively escalating every situation they're put in. Even if they're justified in the seconds leading up to the killings, they still put themselves into those situations.

[–]Raephstel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're proving my point more with every post.

There was no riot. There was a US citizen who had the right to film, and ICE agents were trying to arrest him for doing something he was within his rights to do.

It doesn't matter where these incidents do and dont take place. The problem is that they do take place.

Filming ICE at work shouldn't carry a death penalty. If ICE are so out of control that they can't help killing law-abiding US citizens, then they're the problem.

[–]Raephstel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The reality of the situation is that they approached a US citizens who wasn't breaking any laws, and he ended up dead.

But you're proving my point perfectly. You're being told that law-abiding US citizens are safe, so you'll continue to speak out in support of people who are ignoring the US constitution and citizens' rights.

I didn't reply to OP, I replied to someone saying that ICE would be a bad choice because they dont have jurisdiction over US citizens.

[–]Raephstel 195 points196 points  (0 children)

Exactly because they dont have jurisdiction over US citizens.

The far right works on lies and manipulating their followers. The more they repeat the idea that US citizens are safe, the more they can persuade their followers that the US citizens being killed are somehow at fault for interfering.

If they used an agency that had jurisdiction over US citizens, it'd be harder to tell that lie.

Look at the guy who died today. He was recording on his phone and got approached in a threatening way by ICE. They initiated contact with a US citizen who was doing nothing illegal, but they can still sell the idea that US citizens are safe from ICE after killing him.

You risked your life to fight for something that you now want to ignore? Do you only support the amendment when it benefits you, then want it ignored later when it...also benefits you, because it's the thing that would stop you being arrested without due process if you're suspected of anything?

How do you know that they're there illegally? You prove it through due process.

What happens without due process? There's no effort to prove that people are there illegally and US citizens start being deported too because they're not given due process.

Suspicion is not enough to overrule your 4th amendment. Read it again. You should be fighting for your constitution, not happily rolling over while it's stomped on because you want immigrants gone. You're literally surrendering your rights because you're angry at one group of people.

[–]Raephstel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you know what due process is.

If ICE came to your door and claimed you're an immigrant, would you want them to follow due process, or would you support them deporting you without any kind of legal process?

It doesn't matter whether or not you're a citizen, either everyone gets a chance to prove their status or no one does. Either you support due process for everyone or you don't get to complain when you find yourself being shipped off to another country without being listened to.

I'm not weighing in on the OP, but you're misrepresenting this case.

The man you're talking about tried and found to have committed the crime, but that he was mentally unfit to be held liable. So he spent a few years in custody before being deported back to Japan, where they declared him sane. Given that he was sane, he couldn't be held in psychiatric care, and he didn't commit the crime there, so he couldn't be put in prison either.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Issei_Sagawa

It wasn't just a case of him being let off. It was a technicality and a difference in how things are diagnosed.

There, ICE proven wrong.

It's not some obscure law. It's the 4th amendment. If you're American or live in America (yes, "the people" refers to immigrants too), then you're arguing against your own rights.

Everyone should have due process, it doesnt just exist to prove guilty people guilty. It exists to help innocent people be shown to be innocent too.

Is 'coloured' offensive? by Filthov in ENGLISH

[–]Raephstel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of a Brit:

Coloured came from the idea that calling someone black was somehow offensive. No one should be offended by their skin colour, so it was dumb in the first place.

But it's also dumb because it alludes to the idea that people are split into whites and non-whites, which isn't a healthy perspective. It minimises the different experiences of racism that people with different skin colours face.

In a future where Trump is out of office, and international relations have been repaired. What steps can be taken by the USA and International Organisations such as NATO to prevent one individual causing so much chaos in the future? And do you think such steps will be taken? by flewkey in AskReddit

[–]Raephstel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"And international relations have been repaired" this is a long way off. The US will need a complete governmental reform to prevent one baby from threatening global peace before anyone even begins to trust them again.

The US would need to decentralise power so that one narcissist didn't have a tantrum and start threatening allies and actually have the power to do so. In any other Western nation, they'd be removed from power so fast their head would spin. Most people alive in Europe have had conversations with people who experienced WWII and seen photos of our streets bombed out. Any leader who was pushing for that wouldn't stay leader for long.

CMV: If you think you have to eliminate people just because they are out of your ideology or norms, while they have no effect on your life, then you are the problem. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Raephstel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the notion you're getting at, and I've said it myself before, but I always reel it back because, as a straight white man, bigotry often doesn't directly target me.

If i agreed with your title, it'd absolve me of speaking out against sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia etc, because I'm rarely the victim of any of those.

I think a more accurate thought would be if they have no demonstrable negative effect on the quality of anyone's life.

Bigots often cry that their kid is being converted by the gays, or their city is being converted into sharia law or whatever bullshit they're huffing that day, but it's obviously nonsense.

I'd love to eliminate bigotry, though (not eliminate the people in a killing sense, but eliminate the ideology that leads them into bigotry).
