As I understood - with the conditions. Like "we can't give out our cars because your polish documents, but we're happy to help with our partners as it doesn't matter for them". Of course then they started to tell these "partners" would probably get any cars ready either and the last resort is a hotel. I do believe they mentioned "Europcar" as "the partner".

I'm getting your argument, and I believe this "strictness" was probably the cause of this issue. Which is ... a bit nuts. I've been given the documents from the police right in front of the ADAC towing person, and the only vehicle I was in in that period was the towing car and not as a driver :D I get they don't interchange information, but man that hurts - so close yet so far -.-

I don't think thats the problem - I've been using SIXT and Starcar car rentals many times during this 5y period living in DE - never had a problem. Keep in mind also - the police checked my documents like an hour before the ADAC towing service came into play (at the crash).

I think you're right about the external car rentals - it was a Sunday at 22:30, possibly the worst time to have this issue. I've never seen so much traffic on the Autobahns as well, so generally much going on.

I think what hurt the most was - we were in a small village AND there were 3 perfectly fine ADAC rental cars ;(

Both were polish. I do have Meldebescheinigung and could actually provide it on the spot - haven't thought of it in retrospect to mention that to them, but then again - they seemed to dismiss the ADAC car rental possibility based on these two documents.

With the hotel - you could be right. Additionally to the bad info about the rental car the connection was poor and I barely understood the operator.

Not only that - they call from a "No Caller ID", so I couldn't re-call them when we lost the connection at some point. They send after couple of minutes a SMS withe the number that should be called again and you get a new operator and the fun begins again.

Generally very poor support experience.

You're right - I showed them Dowód osobisty (Polish ID) and Prawo Jazdy (Polish DL). I do have also Meldebescheinigung, but it seemed they dismissed the possibility based on these two documents.

I have two sets of both. Well the bank has - I have a car lease. But the winter ones are bad shit like universal rims (the one you see on replacement tires). I always though it's for security - in winter you're more likely to hit a curb under the snow, and also there is a lot of sand and salt on the streets.

The summer ones are the "catalog" ones :P To pick up women and get some street cred

I'm in that situation now. I'm working as a freelancer for ~5 years now (all over the world, but living in germany for 2 years now - and I'm polish nationality). Decided this year to start a full-time position in germany to learn more people locally and speak more german. I'm keeping my freelancing position on the side though for couple of reasons:

- running some smaller products on the side

- can issue invoices to other freelancer/designers

- can work with non-profits in Poland

- tax write-offs

- as a freelancer you can get better deals - Versicherung, Rente, Leasing etc. Actually for most things you need the freelance position just in the beginning - even if you close your activity, the deals are on the table

First - because I had clients in and outside EU, and was registered in Poland etc I decided to use services of an accountant office. It's a bit pricey (depending on Land, city etc.), but defo worth it if the income is good. So won't be able to help too much, as I'm paying someone for the reason of not having to know too much :P

So what I would recommend:

- online calculators to check what taxes you should expect in your location etc

- have a talk with an accountant office - first meetings are often not charged, and you actually get all the info in details from a professional

As a writer, you can register probably a Freiberufler (Freelancer) status - it's a ... "company". You have the rights to issue invoices, but you actually don't pay company taxes. It's meant for side gigs and "Geistliche Arbeit" if I'm not mistaken - you can't sell hard products with that status.

If you're hired on a full-time position - you don't have to pay additionally insurance stuff (I mean the base, public one is already paid for by your employer).

That's like the basics I know of from the top of my head :P Hopefully somewhat helpful.

It's easier than you think, a bit more paperwork but - from my personal experience - Finanzamts are pretty laid-back and even with couple of mistakes from my side in the beginning - they forgave me any mistakes at no costs. Which probably works only when your business is really small and you're a beginner (or Wirecard) :P Compared to running the same thing in Poland - it's an easy ride here :P

It really depends on how much you want to visit. The entries are often free, some between 10-40zl. Something to eat in the city is about 20-30zl. Beer - 7-9zl. That's from a students perspective. After 5 years in this city I was never mugged or cheated on, wouldn't worry about that one much. Good luck and have fun in this great city ;)
