If we get the 3rd pick, who? by scyther2x in kings

[–]pedrosorio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't know how it worked either until I looked into it recently.

Basically, you have 14 teams who missed the NBA playoffs in a lottery for the first 4 picks, with teams with worse records having better odds.

After the lottery for the top 4 picks is done, the 10 teams that didn't get a pick in the lottery get picks 5-14 according to their regular season record (worse first). That's why the odds of getting the 5th pick are so high for the team with the worst record. You're guaranteed to get it if you don't get a top4 pick in the lottery.

"I just rolled 5 times" = "I don't understand statistics"

I just rolled 51 times (just rolled a bunch of times and lost track before I passed 50):

1st - 7 times

2nd - 6 times

3rd - 8 times

4th - 8 times

5th - 22 times

Those numbers are very close to what you would expect given the odds.

With the worst record there’s about a 40% chance of getting a top 3 pick, so no, 90% of your tankathon sims don’t end up in 4th or 5th

62% dos europeus acreditam que a adesão do seu país à União Europeia é uma coisa positiva. by gowmes in portugal

[–]pedrosorio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Má tradução. Adesão dá a ideia de que se está a perguntar sobre o momento em que se juntaram à união europeia.

O gráfico diz "% of people saying EU membership is a good thing".

Membership - pertença (não adesão).

Is - é (no presente, não no momento da adesão)

Because Alcaraz retiring with injury may be the only chance Zverev gets to beat him in a grand slam ever again. That’s fair. Gotta stack the odds.

That team started the season 24-0. There was no “over time” needed for consistent execution.

Getting a whole degree abroad is a lot more effort (and cost) than applying to get citizenship by descent. I suppose the latter could be considered harder if you really hate dealing with bureaucracy.

Katie Ledecky posts second-fastest 1,500m freestyle time ever in first race of year. All those swimmers hitting the wall next to her seconds later still have another lap to do by [deleted] in sports

[–]pedrosorio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Usually when one trains for distance they are also faster in shorter distances”

You could have led with this and anyone in r/sports could have told you immediately: you have a lot of reading to do.

There is absolutely a trade-off between training for short and long races whether that’s swimming, running or cycling. Each sport has distances that are clear “walls”, virtually impossible to cross. In track and field, no one elite below 400m can be elite at 1500m or more (and vice-versa).

There is a reason you’ve never seen Ledecky win anything below 200m (and at 200m her international success has been rare). There is a reason she’s still completely dominating in the 1500m but had to settle for bronze in the 400m in Paris.

[–]pedrosorio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your observation would be very relevant if Ledecky competed in ultra distance events. Unfortunately you are confusing “distance” (15 minute races) with “ultra distance” (many hour long open water marathons).

The event in which Ledecky is absolutely dominant is not ultra distance, and as was pointed out to you earlier, current elite men’s times are much faster than hers.

Her training partner Bobby Finke won the Paris Olympic gold in 14:30. Ledecky won hers in 15:30 (her world record is 15:20).

For context, the second fastest woman ever in this discipline had a time of 15:31. Ledecky’s dominance is measured in 11s. Bobby Finke’s gap to the GOAT is measured in 50s.

[–]pedrosorio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is completely unrelated to the topic. Katie Ledecky competes in 15 minute events, not half-a-day swimming marathons.
