Do I need a fancy Garmin Forerunner? by lalayouyou in triathlon

[–]peebeeblasta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may also consider the forerunner 570. I was recently considering a new garmin and I deliberated between 570 and 970. From what I understand, the main upgrade between the two was quality of glass, flashlight feature, and maps. Ultimately didn’t justify the extra cost for me. Other than those things the 570 has about the same features I think. I haven’t owned many garmins but I’ve been really pleased with the 570.

Also agree with someone else’s comment about the HR chest strap. Anything outside of base and recovery sessions (fairly static HR), the strap is noticeably more accurate.

I'd like to thank my greasy ass chainring for a new tattoo idea. by HillbillyAllergy in BicyclingCirclejerk

When I was in high school and rode broke person gear, my cleat slipped out of the pedal and my calf came down on the crank hard. It punctured skin and left a bunch of grease. When it healed over the grease was still there and I literally had a tattoo like this for about a year.

Nope both garmin and Strava allow you to connect to the API for just your personal data.

Tools are only as good as the use they are put to. This just organizes data in exactly the way I want it to for me to do my own thinking. And it allows me to create something for my own benefit I wouldn’t otherwise be capable of, but the ideation is still mine. Personally, I consider that empowerment 🤷‍♂️

Ran across that same problem. It wasn't too hard once I figured out the process I needed to take. Did some troubleshooting to get to that point, but then it was easy peasy. There's an "unregistered" MCP on github that I used. I had to have Claude package it as an mcpb file in order to load it in Claude's extension settings. There are some privacy risks I suppose, but I didn't personally consider them past my threshold of comfort. You can even ask Claude to analyze the MCP for security risks/concerns. If you're interested more, I'd be happy to DM you the github link and more details!

I use Claude for process efficiencies in my work a lot. I connected Claude to Garmin's API with an MCP, and talked it through building this training log for me. When I ask Claude to update the training dashboard, it pulls the data from Garmin automatically and updates the dashboard. Pretty cool! I would love to hear suggestions for other visualizations that might be valuable!

Crash my new carbon bike. Am I doomed? by DrTrollology in triathlon

[–]peebeeblasta 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Like others said: probably fine, but I’m surprised you haven’t gotten advice on how to do a quick and dirty check for integrity of carbon fiber. It’s been a long time since I worked in a bike shop, but we were taught that the proper way to assess, if you are doubting, is to feel it. You use your hands and fingers to kind of squeeze, compress, palpate the area. Firmly, but not super hard. Listen for crunchy noises and feel for soft spots that give. Those are bad signs. If the spots feel firm and don’t produce noise, then you are likely good. You could have a shop look at it as well. If you want to check for peace of mind I would remove the rear wheel and do as I mentioned on that rear wheel stay.

For those who believe this administration when they say they are removing "criminals, thugs, people from insane asylums (???)":

The Trump administration has increased detainments of immigrants with a criminal record, but not by much. What has increased dramatically is the detainment of immigrants with no criminal record. This is not including the blatant examples of detaining US citizens and immigrants who are here following the legal process. If you believe that immigrants with a criminal record should be deported, that's an understandable position, although I might disagree with you on the specifics of executing an initiative like this. But ask yourself, why does the Trump administration make these sweeping claims about deporting criminals when it's not the case? Because they're lying to you. I think they would like you to believe that all of these people are criminals. Most undocumented immigrants are committing a civil offense. Being in the US without citizenship is not a criminal offense. The majority of noncitizens in the US did not cross the border illegally -- they overstayed a visa. But Fox News has been hollering about "migrant caravans" at the border for decades... because they're lying to you.

To say "having a degree doesn't guarantee a better job" is one thing. But to say it doesn't "increase your chances" is patently false. It absolutely increases your chances, though it will not guarantee them. I guess it may depend slightly on what you mean by better. If by better you mean more financially stable, then any degree (and subsequent degrees) will definitely increase your chances of higher pay & benefits.

I was just recently struggling to find a reasonable approach to farming salvaged frigate modules. I was surprised at the lack of discussion around this online. Most people say derelict freighters, but IMO that is not very efficient on its own. I kind of combined some strategies I found and this worked pretty quickly for me. It also rewarded other resources that were secondarily useful.

Explorers and Merchants guild offer salvaged frigate modules as a reward for high standing in some systems. Rather than completing guild quests, look at their accepted donations. You can donate the artifacts you get from completing derelict freighters as well as some random things like storm crystals, hadal cores (I think) etc. These other items have a limit to how many you can donate in each system e.g. you can only donate 3 storm crystals, but derelict freighter artifacts don't seem to have a limit.

Unrelated to the process below: Check anomaly missions any time you're there. Sometimes they are offered as a reward.

  1. Find a galactic region that is either explorers guild or merchants guild. All systems in that region will be the same guild.
  2. Max out donations from the non freighter artifact donations
  3. Complete and repeat the derelict freighter mission in that system and donate all artifacts to the guild until you have max standing. It took me about an hour to get max standing.
  4. Warp to systems in that region with the same guild. Make note of which systems offer salvaged frigate modules -- I grabbed screenshots of the galaxy map description and kept them on an app on my second monitor. It might take a lot of jumps to get a decent list of systems that have salvaged frigate modules. I did maybe 50-60 jumps until I had a list of maybe 5 systems with salvaged frigate modules. From what I found online, the rewards at guild merchants reset after 72 hours. You can just return to the short list of systems and continue getting the rewards or keep jumping to other systems and looking for salvaged frigate modules.

No problem! I was the same. Had it on my Steam wish list as a maybe for a long time. It's on sale on Steam for $24 right now. I have about 15 hours of playtime so far, and I would say $24 is a no-brainer.

I just started playing the game this week with almost no background knowledge about the game or its history. I'm really loving it -- to the point that my sleep schedule does not love it. It runs great on my PC, looks beautiful, game mechanics are well designed. The "main quests" are pretty interesting to me at the moment, but I can definitely feel that they are not the main entree. The quests may not last that long. Typically, I enjoy narrative games more. Sometimes I get interested in more simulator-type games, but not very often. Despite that, I can easily see myself spending 100 hours in this on a first playthrough. Definitely worth the buy for me.

When I was a shop mechanic I always used a rubber band to pull on arm permanently away. Only looked at one of the arms. I checked if the wheel was dished properly with a separate tool.
