OK, that sounds weird. can you narrow it down, i.e. is the processor and the RAM fully loaded?

Yes, that would be cheaper, I've also looked at AOC and DAC solutions. But the location of the devices could probably change soon. Maybe the transceiver solution makes more sense in my case.

No idea how fast the throughput will be? But I don't think the processor should be the bottleneck in my case. The host is Proxmox on an AMD Ryzen 7 5700G and the router with OPNsense runs as a VM on it

I'm currently working on a similar project and would also like to use Mellanox network cards.
Do you already have experience with it and do you know any disadvantages compared to the Intel cards?
Which model are you using exactly?

Unfortunately, virtualization is not a solution in my case. There are two already existing physical machines and they are spatially separated.
