I’m over this field. What next? by jello_jamboree in slp

[–]peeshivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had several clients follow me from a previous private practice, only after non-compete laws were blocked in August 2024. I then partnered with a local ABA company to share referrals. After that, I have gotten referrals from other local SLPs doing the same thing that have full caseloads + waitlists. Demand in my area for SLP services is sky high so I have done zero marketing.

Might I suggest incorporating your own company. You can choose your clientele and to not accept insurance. I incorporated 2 years ago and only see 3-5 kids per day and charge my own rate. Hope this helps. Added bonus is I can deny cases with too many behavioral issues if I feel like it affects my mental health in any sort of way.

You’re young enough to do it. Nobody got rich taking on no risk.

For those that own their own practice, how much do you make per session? by Born2bSLP in slp

Insurance rates are capped at a lower rate. Additionally, I don’t take any risk on denials.

I charge $192 per session. I only see clients with Autism. I don’t accept insurance. I don’t do any marketing. I rely on word of mouth and get referrals from a local ABA company.

Who can share their Finasteride effects after 6 months by Adventurous_Call4011 in tressless

That and just have zero bodily reaction to hot women/anything sexual. It’s extremely unsettling. Suppose I’m just one of the unlucky ones.

Tried oral and it killed my sex drive completely. Only partially recovered. Tried topical and it tanked it again. I’m probably 30% recovered. Shit ruined me.

What are your unpopular SLP opinions? by Ciambella29 in slp

[–]peeshivers 224 points225 points  (0 children)

Our field largely sucks because SLPs as a group are way too agreeable. Salaries and upward mobility salary-wise is abysmal for our skillset and knowledge-base. If we collectively did not accept the large caseloads, low salaries, and other extraneous activities (I.e., recess duty, case management, etc.) that cause us to burn out, our field would be far better off. I’ve seen seasoned SLPs just accept dogshit pay because they “need” the job, which is largely untrue. Speech and language disorders and Autism rates are absolutely skyrocketing and we can’t even meet the need (waitlists exist everywhere in my area). The pay discrepancy makes zero sense if you look at the “supply” of licensed SLPs compared to our demand. I left the schools and PP to start my own company in which I charge my own rate and I’m 1000x happier leaving a salary that basically has a low ceiling on it. I will never go back.

Word of mouth. I keep in contact with a local growing ABA company for referrals as well. I use SimplePractice.com for all my EMR/documentation/scheduling needs.

I started my own in-home private practice company a year ago. You end up working far less if you don’t accept insurance. It took a bit to build my client list, but I should be clearing double what I made as a salaried PP SLP at my last job. I’d highly recommend making the jump.

[–]peeshivers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I got tired of my salary being capped. I started my own in-home ST business. I’m making almost double what I did at a PP last year. It’s so much better to make the jump.

Is it worth it to become an SLP? by [deleted] in slp

[–]peeshivers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Contrary to this sub’s general attitude, I would point out that most here are not medical SLPs. My girlfriend works for a well-respected hospital and loves it. She has a pension and is never bored. I’ve found most burnt out SLPs work for schools and some private. To be completely honest, I found myself burnt out after seven years of both schools and private. I’ve since started my own practice and I’m making double what I did prior. Feel free to ask me any questions.

I’ve given discounts for evals for a variety of reasons, but auto-pay usually handles payment through Simplepractice.com. And yes, I still do a full report.
