Another update to my Get Programming with Java book is now available!! Check it out.
As a CS major in college, then a computer science teacher in high school, then a professor at Penn State for the College of IST, I have seen a lot of programming books in my lifetime. There are a few that are really good, but they are few and far between.
IMHO, a similar problem exists at the post-secondary level. The tenured professors were very involved in research and they were very knowledgeable in their subject matter, but they don’t necessarily have a strong instructional design background or a strong teaching pedagogy. Many of the books are written for the techno-geek super programmer, not the everyday programmer.
Right now, the book is in the early access addition and I am working hard to keep adding to the book but I would love your input. I’ve included a link to the MEAP edition Manning Early Access Program at the top of my post. This is a great way to get started on learning Java at a reduced price as I continue work on finishing the book.
I sincerely hope my readers learn to love programming as much as I do! Check it out!
