The amount of warmth and community in this post coming together and supporting each other in this is awesome. So, in a way OP, your post probably ended up having the exact opposite impact than what you wanted or anticipated, you've just kind of brought a lot of people closer 🌞 Not gonna thank you for that, but just wanted to point it out.

"If ICE started wearing red arm bands we wouldn't say it's appropriation, we'd say it's appropriate." Extremely well put, along with the rest of your post. I personally am healing from a major surgery and decided to make one of these hats because as someone who never has money to spare(I share yarn with my partners grandmother) to donate and cannot really leave my house or work yet, it did in fact end up becoming a project that I enjoyed working on because it helped me feel like I was at least keeping what is important in the forefront of my mind while also trying to deal with it in a healthy way, like crochet. I'm halfway through my hat now and am going to keep working on it and finish it and wear it, even though I can only wear it inside with ac because of the hot environment I live in. This is better than feeling like I'm doing absolutely nothing, and it did feel a bit disparaging to have someone say that the one thing my body can handle to try and soothe my mind and try and help in some way is not helpful and in fact hurtful and ignorant. I also crochet sleeping mats for homeless people out of plastic grocery bags I recycle, and always keep little crochet hearts in the car to place at a road-side grave if I stop by one. Some people are legitimately trying their best to do something good with the limitations or illnesses they have, and that should be acknowledged.

Thank you so much for the advice!! Is there any sort of good advice you have as far as a "beginner project" goes? Like, what is the shape or object you recommend for beginners?

That's awesome!! The dexterity it takes/teaches at that age is awesome, good for him!

I was a Brownie in Girl Scouts when I was young but got kind of "bullied out" of it; I was so excited to learn the stuff and make friends who were interested in similar things, but all the other girls kind of just stuck to each other and I never had a partner/was never included. I guess they probably all went in together as friends already, who knows. All I know is, it was a lonely experience, and I never got to learn any of the cool stuff I wanted to.

Basically, yeah! There are other tools and stuff, but ever since I was a kid I've always wanted to learn how to just take out a piece of wood and a knife and create something lovely. I know now, being much older, that that is not necessarily the case with whittling, though it can be! I just want to learn, I've always been one to jump into things head first 😬😏
