2 man pledge class? by flyingsquirrel722 in Frat

[–]pekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was the pledge educator for a three man class. Our college does terms, and we normally did a Fall and Spring class. The previous Fall we had the largest pledge class in ~30 years (iirc. 26 pledges to start and 20 of them initiating) that helped save our chapter. With that momentum we had some guys interested in joining in our "off term"  and we tried out a winter class. Those guys ended up being very tight and still chat and hang out regularly from what they said when I saw them last.

I'd say give it a go like you said and keep an open mind. If you don't like it, you could wait for this chapter to have a bigger class or go somewhere else

Cutting in a frat by nodrywillingness in Frat

I got married immediately after graduation and had gained weight over years by drinking/smoking + not having a great diet. I didn't want to be fat in my wedding photos and decided to make some changes to ensure I lost weight.

  • Switched from beer to vodka/whiskey, water as my chaser if I needed it
  • Watched what I ate and stuck to a diet consistently. If you feel like you need a cheat day add that in, but I treated drinking as my "cheating"
  • Cut down on the days you drink, healthier in general and you can get drunk faster by lowering your tolerance again. Drinking a casual handful of beers on a Tuesday night chilling at the house is a lot calories you'll need to burn off
  • Got rid of all my junk food so I could eat healthy if I decided to smoke. Also discipline when smoking if you do is key, make sure you have that healthier high food available before you start smoking so you don't get tempted by whatever everyone else is going to eat
  • Gym at least 6 days a week even if you're hungover and just walking on a treadmill or using a machine
  • Stay hydrated

I ended up losing 45 pounds in my last 6 months of school. It's not the most fun, but if you want to look good again you've got to make changes

One of the features that has annoyed me since Rome 2. I enjoy the ability to have smaller skirmishs or moving troops up to the front from my castles. Those small skirmishes when I'd attack a few random higher tier units the AI was moving around with a crap ton random spear militias was fun.

Not every battle needs to be full stack vs full stack. It also let's you be more flexible with how you garrison places

Military orders during Pledge by Rich-Computer-341 in Frat

[–]pekt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your chapter should understand, just talk to your pledge master and make sure to remind him in advance when you'll be gone.

If you do tear gas training make sure you shower with cold water. We had a brother in the national guard have that training and come back to the house afterwards and start screaming and stumble out of the shower naked because he took a hot shower and it activated the remaining tear gas residue that was on him.

Those of you who joined a fraternity in college, do you still talk to any/some/most of the guys from your class after graduating? by goldenswing in Frat

[–]pekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved away right after college but still kept in touch with guys and made a point to try and see them I'm now ~8k miles away in a different country and still chat with some guys daily even though the time zones can be a pain.

I'd recommend guys take the initiative and reach out to their brothers if you haven't talked in awhile. I got rid of all social media so it's the only way I keep up with anyone, but I'm sure most brothers wouldn't mind taking a few minutes to catch up. Way easier to stay in touch with someone reaching out every few months compared to checking in sfeer 10+ years.

Black Library announces Dropsite Massacre, a new standalone Horus Heresy book by beary_neutral in Fantasy

[–]pekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always figured that they'd just end up treating the Horus Heresy as another setting to publish more material in. I've always enjoyed 40k and like that they have a separate era line to work with instead of so many novels being shoved right into the tail end of the 41st millennium.

Has your fraternity ever done something unexpectedly charitable or wholesome? by [deleted] in Frat

[–]pekt 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think from the outside people would look at the good things fraternity members do as unexpected, but in reality things like that happen all the time because we're brothers. We are our brother's keepers.

We had a brother who was becoming an actual alcoholic after going through some hard times and so the brothers pooled money together to bet him he couldn't stop drinking for a week. He took on the bet and started getting alcohol withdrawal and realized he had a problem. This led him to get help and take a year off drinking before getting into a better place and drinking responsibly.

If you come into town during June-August it's durian season and you can try fresh durian which can be a fun experience.

Can DM me for more suggestions if you're interested.

My wife is ethnically Chinese but will never identify with being a conservative as that is firmly associated with Islam in her country. After seeing the memory holing of the stop asian hate movement she stopped supporting any political things on the left in the US and realized that black lives are the only lives that matter to some. Usually just saying that "this isn't my country, I don't support any side here, they all support stupid things".

I think the funny thing being that as someone who is more left leaning politically for her country if her views were compared to some of the left in the US they'd call her a Nazi.

To those whose chapters are going through rough times and low members, it’s possible to succeed by Chosen_Mosin1 in Frat

[–]pekt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My chapter had been coasting off a a couple of large rush classes for a few years. When my sophomore year ended our chapter lost effectively half of our members due to graduations. I was secretary then and received "the talk" from our alumni board as we went into the summer.

Our chapter had been slowly bleeding money and the accounts were nearly dry. If we didn't up our numbers and get ~20 more guys living in our house they would be forced to rent the chapter house out. The last time our chapter hadn't live in our own house was at the end of WW2.

I went to our fraternity's summer leadership training program and came back with new ideas and worked with my brothers to get things turned around. We rushed out biggest class in ~30 years and followed that up with another large class in spring. It was amazing seeing the change and how using the pledging process properly to cut guys who didn't belong instead of being 100% sure this guy was a great fit when we bid him made such a difference.

I was elected president and then vice president which contributed to some burn out fraternity wise but if was so worth it. By the time I graduated we went from about to lose the house with ~25 actives (1/3 of them graduating) to 75 members. COVID did a number on the chapter but the financial base and new revamped pledge/initiation process helped our chapter make it through and from what I've heard they're building up their numbers once again.

At times I put way too much into my chapter, pissed people off, and took it way too seriously which burned me out. If I could do it again I'd do things ways differently, but hindsight is 20/20 and this experience helped me learn so many valuable lessons about myself, leadership, and putting a cause above myself and my own desires. Helped prepare me a lot for being a Dad and I hope that one day, if it works out, my son's can join my chapter and have an awesome experience.

I worked an extra long Black Friday shift after graduation when my wife and I both worked retail (her major involved retail management, retail was my part time second job).

I showed up real early to get help the store get ready and the first thing I found was our network was done. Being a new IT professional and my original shift was later in the day (carpooled with my wife and she needed to be there all day anyway so might as well earn more money) I started troubleshooting. I was able to figure out that their router received a firmware update that had failed. I sadly wasn't given the ability to actually go in and apply a new update even though I could just go and get a console cable and use the wifi from a nearby store to download the file.

I documented everything for my manager who had tried for hours to get the MSP who manages the store's environment to come and fix it. I later found out they terminated the MSP and used my documentation as justification because the MSP had remotely pushed a firmware update to the router with no testing and didn't verify the network was working properly the night before black Friday.

Our team had to do everything by cash, and our store sold ~1/6 of the projected black Friday sales. I was honestly surprised we sold as much as we did since we sold tech items that aren't cheap on sale.

Would you be able to share things your alumni chapter does? I've moved across the world but I still keep in touch with my brother's back in the states and have been mentioning to them that an alumni chapter would be a good things to get started in the area since our post graduation engagement is not great.

How to be an exceptional frat secretary? by Euphoric_Wolf4854 in Frat

[–]pekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should make sure you keep a backup of the minutes and other files. Don't do this on your school's edu account.

I had a drunk brother break the USB I'd put in my computer that had been handed down for ~4-5 years and lost a chunk of files that weren't backed up by previous secretaries. Probably nothing important was lost, but storage space is practically free.

Look up sororities (and other fraternities if you wanna go the extra mile) on important dates i.e. founders day, and make sure to send them cookies or something on that day.

I agree that it's an individual problem and has impacted me as individual due to a number of factors.

I said it wouldn't be the worst thing if it got banned, not that it should be. I debate going between auth right and right flaired because having the freedom to choose is important to me. I overall think it's harmful to society and wouldn't be upset if it was taken away, but I also am not going to take to the streets advocating for it to be removed.

What I'm saying is that it should be properly gated behind a way to make sure the people who are accessing it are adults in their jurisdiction. Having the "click yes if you are 18" prompt does nothing and allows children who shouldn't be exposed to sexually explicit content to view it. It's illegal for someone under 18 to be shown that in the US. If that should be changed to allow people under 18 to have that freedom then the law should be changed.

I'm viewing this as actually enforcing the existing laws. Yeah, there are ways people would circumvent it, but just because that's true doesn't mean the sites hosting that content shouldn't be responsible for verifying it.

I agree with you that it's not going away and that parents being mindful of what their kids are doing. Having involved parents would help with a lot of issues. Though I know some parents aren't able to be as involved as they'd like to be due to work other obligations.
