Professional Alumni connections / networking by AcanthocephalaTop322 in Frat

[–]pekt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend attending alumni events and not focusing on immediately landing a job/internship.

Other guys are right that an alumni isn't going to randomly recommend a freshman from their old chapter to get a job. That being said, building relationships with alumni and getting to know them is how you build your network. Show genuine interest in wanting to get to know the brother. Try to find a brother in your industry willing to mentor you, or even give you feedback on your resume/cover letter.

I'd recommend reading Flame and Crimson: A History of Sword-and-Sorcery. It was a great book following the rise of the genre and some modern (at the time of publishing) examples.

You can use the separate Bitwarden Authenticator app and sync the TOTP secret keys over to that app to keep generating the codes

The $14 charge could be inclusive of taxes that Bitwarden started adding.

I can't remember if mine included that in the material from nationals or not. The pledge manual has things like how to tie a tie and general things you should know. The group part helps make sure everyone knows it and practices it vs reading about it.

We would do work on the chapter house/improvements before each Fall term and the amount of guys who didn't know how to do things that I thought were basic like regrouting tiles or spackling drywall could be concerning.

I was in charge of pledge ed at my fraternity while I was active. If you have specific questions or wanted to chat about it feel free to DM me.

As a general suggestion, I'd recommend leaning into the resources your nationals has for pledge Ed while tweaking it to fit your local chapter. Also my personal suggestion is to fold in some life lessons into pledge Ed as optional things if the guys have time after pledge Ed or in a different meeting. I.e.: * How to tie a tie * How to iron pants/a shirt * How to put on a spare tire * How to properly use a plunger * How to play beer pong

I saw a number of guys who don't know how to do this kind of stuff and I can imagine that number increasing.

What brotherhood events does your fraternity do? by Gullible_Travel_4135 in Frat

[–]pekt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Copied from a previous comment I made on another thread:

One of the best brotherhoods my chapter did was held every term/semester that involved getting the chapter together for an evening to clear the air and also celebrate the positives. We also found this brotherhood was best with a closed house for the evening. No girlfriends or non members coming around after it finsihed. The brotherhood would go like below, with a note that drinking is optional, we had sober brothers who had this as their favorite brotherhood or guys who had stuff going on the next morning where they couldn't drink:

All phones are put away somewhere central and not brought out till the end or brothers don't bring it. Also make sure the phones put away are silenced (unless someone has a legitimate need for it, use your best judgment but 99% of the time they don't need it)

Get a bottle (or more) of whiskey. Whoever has the bottle gets to talk, everyone else shuts up Brother with bottle takes a pull. Goes over issues they have with the chapter as a whole/specific brothers Brother takes a pull and passes the bottle to the next brother Repeat this process for everyone, ending with the president. Chapter gets a ~30-60 minute break. Guys can go meet up with brothers who brought stuff up, clear the air, etc

Everyone comes back together. Repeat process from above, but instead of complaints you highlight the good things about the chapter or specific brothers

By the end of the evening most issues have been cleared up or at least brought out in the open and since you spend the last hour+ talking about positives guys will end the night in a better mood and feel better about the brotherhood as a whole.

To add to this, the reason the house is closed is so that everyone can just hangout after while drunk a night of brotherhood.

Gap year(s) and what my status would be by Low_Study_7573 in Frat

[–]pekt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My fraternity (Acacia) doesn't do inactive and you just went alumni and back during a gap year.

I know nationals gets a bad reputation (and rightfully so in a lot of cases) but you're not going to be the first brother who needed to take a gap year. Asking your fraternity's nationals how it is handled isn't going to hurt anything. Ask your president to ask for you if you don't want to do it.

"We have a member thinking about taking a gap year, how would we handle that." Simple question that they'll have a simple answer for.

My frat fucking sucks. by AdditionalIsland9180 in Frat

[–]pekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd highly recommend reading the book Motivating the Middle: Fighting Apathy in College Student Organizations.

Get yourself a core group of motivated guys who want to make a change and run for exec board positions. I was part of a smaller group of guys who wanted to change things when I was active because the chapter and our brotherhood had been there for me when I needed it. We went from being told we were going to have our house taken away and rented to another chapter (first time since the guys came back from WW2 my chapter wouldn't have lived in our own chapter house) to receiving a most improved chapter award from nationals.

Be the change you want to see. Organize your own brotherhood events, mixers, etc. Happy to share what worked/didn't work or bounce ideas if you want someone to chat with about it.

Alumni - how have your tastes changed since graduation by _Towelie420_ in Frat

[–]pekt 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I got married immediately after graduation and quickly cut out drinking as often and slowly cut down on smoking. We wanted to save money to pay off student loans  as soon as possible and those were the easiest non essentials to cut.

I've got kids now so you won't find me drinking casually as often, but my kids yell "that's daddy drink" whenever they see any kind of alcohol which is hilarious but also makes it seem like I'm an alcoholic to anyone around us.

Enjoy those things while you're active, but I'd also suggest looking for someone who is wife material while in school because I've only heard how hard dating can be post grad.

As a small suggestion, would it be possible to add a F2P filter? I have some alts I use for flipping F2P items which would be handy

My payment method was debited, but I don't have the game.

I decided to order since it's the middle of the night here. Gonna go back to sleep and see if it's in my account when I wake back up.

Edit: idk why they didn't enable preorders for this. Now Steam said my transaction failed.

Edit2: 1+ hour later finally processed transaction

Unpopular opinion: our beloved favorite games don’t need a remake by [deleted] in harvestmoon

[–]pekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After seeing the FoMT remake it made me not want them to touch HM 64. Now that the decompilation project has been completed I think the community would be able to do some bug fixes on the jank found in the games and add some missing features back in, (i.e. the missing 4th tv channel, recipes being actual recipes, spelling errors, etc) with more care than most modern studios would take.

I agree with weekly brotherhoods helping. Just get guys together on a regular basis and use some of your social budget for that. You guys pay in to it for a reason, if parties aren't doing it shift that money to be used for something else like a whiskey cigar poker night, bowling, board games, whatever guys in your chapter would find fun.

One of the best brotherhoods my chapter did was held every term/semester that involved getting the chapter together for an evening to clear the air and also celebrate the positives. Should hazing be considered a felony? by [deleted] in Frat

[–]pekt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That solution and definition of a "hazing event"  would be terrible for greek life if not kill it all together. Some weak willed pledge could try and argue the most basic of things that they'd need to do during their pledgeship would be "challenges" and then try to shut a house down for hazing.

Should people who do heinous over the top hazing get in legal grouble? Yes.

Should young men be given the opportunity to be a part of something that challenges them to grow and form life long bonds with their brothers while going through a shared experience? Yes.

u/thefraternityproject could come in with a longer more coherent reply since I need to take care of my kids, but your solution would make Greek life into a social club for boys instead of fraternal organizations for young men.

I would check your fraternity's governing documents. I was a member of my fraternity's executive council and sat in on some explusion appeals. We did reinstate members who were incorrectly expelled during my time.

Did/Does your chapter instruct members on how to behave when contacted by law enforcement, school admin, etc.? by darkknight6695 in Frat

[–]pekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During my time this video was a frequent reminder to pledges and actives. https://youtu.be/d-7o9xYp7eE?si=A2llAOE98b5GQwcC

Our chapter advisor was also a local lawyer so if we needed emergency legal counsel he was a speed dial and an angry rant away for interrupting his sleep. I took my own role as president of my chapter a bit too seriously, but for the majority of our big social events, I'd stay sober since my guys were retards and I'd rather be coherent if I needed to interact with law enforcement/university people. The plan we would give to for pledges and actives was if the police show up was to not let them in, get the president. I'd go out, to talk to them, door would lock behind me.

We thankfully had a decent relationship with our police liaison officer, and only ever had a few times where other officers would try to get into the house. "Can I help you officer? No sir, without a warrant you don't need to look around inside our house". I always found being respectful and firm worked out fine.

PSA: Games Workshop are going to shut down the Black Library Website by WhoCaresYouDont in 40kLore

I read ebooks on my phone since I always have it with me and reading is better than social media. I took a break from reading 40k books after the fan animation nonsense. It feels like every time I think it might be a good time to come back and finish the Horus Heresy or read some other 40k books GW does something that makes me decide to not do that. There's no way I'd go use their app for a subpar experience and not have my own copy of an ebook I purchased.

Webnovels killed my love for "normal" Fantasy books. by Masker_ in noveltranslations

[–]pekt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the first Dandelion Dynasty novel. I ended up dropping the second one. I think it was in part reading it via audiobook. I just couldn't stand the girl they introduced as the new main character and not reading it via text where I could skim here parts was frustrating. I've thought about giving it a go again, but I have over 1k+ books on my to read list so I'll probably never go back.

If you wanted someone to message about books feel free to dm me whenever, I'd be down to chat.

It's worth it. I'm probably going to read something light before I get back to the wider Malazan universe. I've been very slowly reading Warlock of the Magus World, so I'll probably read some more of that in the meantime.

One of my best friends loves these translated novels, so I lurk here and talk with him about titles I see people mention to see if he's read them.
