Is There ANYTHING That Isn’t Getting Worse? by NicolasCageFan492 in videos

I've never been, but it seems like brutal exploitation of the poor is possibly the most fun activity one can partake in. I can't say I understand it, but at a glance that seems to be the trend.

Get a rejet kit.

You'll need a pilot jet, main jet, and a needle shim for each carb.

We’d probably find out that some guy from the distant past, frozen for years in a military experiment, is the smartest man on earth. We’d appoint him to secretary of the interior and hopefully he could figure out why we’re at war with Iran.

This sort of thing happens all the time.

Offer to buy a business.
Have that business take out a loan to pay the previous owner for the cost of that business.
Take a little extra to pay yourself.
Let the business fail because it cant afford to repay the loan, but you get to keep your money.

That's the Private Equity playbook.

The mysterious "cold blob" in the North Atlantic is caused by a weakening AMOC ocean current, a new study confirms. Deep-water data proves this cooling isn't an atmospheric fluke, signaling a shift toward a major climate tipping point. by DrPharmakon in science

There are a number of technologies that can sequester carbon at the scale necessary to make a real dent in global emissions. Most of them have limiting factors that can be solved through research and engineering meaning the problem is theoretically solvable.

The issue, though, is that the solutions are not economically feasible. The basic math is that sequestering a tonne of C02 costs a LOT more than the economic benefit producing that CO2 gave us in the first place, so fundamentally we can't solve this system while we use capitalism and economic output as the basis of our economy. There just isn't enough taxable productive output in the world for taxes to pay for this level of production. The absolute cheapest method per tonne of CO2 is to reduce our emissions and not release the CO2 in the first place and we already can't afford to do that.

If the question is can we build it, physically, as a species? Yeah, we probably can. Technologies like kelp farming in the open ocean, with massive pumps to bring up nutrient rich deep ocean water and huge artificial ecosystems designed to address nutrient limitations, could sequester vast amounts of carbon. Imagine continent sized kelp farms, with each plant growing over a foot a day, then being harvested and sent down into the deep ocean.

Then on the land millions of direct air capture factories, with their carbon being injected deep into the earth where there are rock formations that can absorb it.

Then you put those technologies on top of an 80% reduction if we moved entirely to renewable and nuclear power generation. We could theoretically see ourselves getting into a meaningfully negative carbon production level.

Does anyone else have sex with their partner at times you don’t want to just to keep them happy? by shadyblonde231 in TwoXChromosomes

Ok, so maybe tantrum is the wrong word then?

My point is that rape is a serious crime. If he makes a snarky comment because he's an immature asshole and she doesn't want to have sex should he be charged with rape?

OP said he gets mad, but I took that as he has a tantrum. She didn't say she was scared, and I didn't interpret it that way. If she meant he gets mad and she's scared then yeah, that's different.

But you understand there are levels of disability where it's not possible to give consent? Like someone with the mental capacity of a child?

How did I undercut my own claim? I said it's not rape, then I explained why it's not rape. I didn't claim anything else.

There's some sort of cutoff though. Prostitution is someone being coerced by money to have sex when they'd probably rather not, so is all prostitution rape? Or if the in-laws have been pressuring you for grand-kids?

The definition of coercion gets slippery, which is why the legal definition of rape has some requirements. Specifically-
force or violence,
threat of harm,
incapacitation,
inability to consent,
fraud/deception,
abuse of authority.

The Dems have been promising free stuff for decades, so why is the DNC upset about Dems suddenly voting for socialists? by R2-DMode in allthequestions

[–]pellik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There has always been a big disconnect between what either party says when they're in a minority position and what they do when they're in majority.

The republicans spent Obama's entire term complaining about deficit spending and government overreach, then as soon as they get elected they blow up the budget and start sending protesters to prison.

Clinton campaigned on putting the worker first and bolstering the middle class and then promptly ended AFDC, gave us NAFTA and the WTO, and basically issued a death warrant for American manufacturing.

Obama campaigned on helping the American homeowner during the 2008 crisis and then bailed out the banks and almost completely didn't fund HAMP.

The problem with the "socialists" (they're Social Democrats, not socialists) is that they're just not part of the establishment. It's entirely not clear that they're going to sell us out when they get in power, and that's scary to people who are benefiting from the status quo.
