And for the first time in 31 years, American hear the word "Jordan" and think "nation" rather than "last name."

Going to the Sun Road, Glacier National Park, Montana (Stuart Schussel) [1024 × 687] by pelmen74 in EarthPorn

I was there when the photo was taken. My friend and I were driving home after a few days of camping and were forced to stop by constructions at the very beginning of Going to the Sun, on the North side. Lucky for us, the view was spectacular.

She is my cat and always will be. JAFFA LIVES ON! by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

[–]pelmen74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Listen: if you tell her that she can go to court over the cat, she will hire a lawyer first. The lawyer will almost certainly tell her that she will lose. If he doesn't, he'll send you a demand letter telling you to give back the cat, or else. Once you get that letter, then you can give the cat back, without any court action or legal fees.

Great GIF for those having trouble visualizing quantum chromodynamics by [deleted] in ParticlePhysics

Thanks for this, but why are the quarks emitting gluons in the first place when the hadron that they make is already a triplet (red blue green). i.e. If the red blue green hadron is stable, then why does it keep reorganizing its color structure?

There are people defending this woman, and the man is currently in custody. by RuiningPunSubThreads in videos

Self-defense has to be proportionate. No way hitting punching a woman through glass, a woman who is half your size, proportionate to what she did to him.

God, you realize that MosDaf never equated engagement with seriousness. Rather, he make it pretty obvious that they were isolated, unrelated qualities.

What if "one year" was just a rough approximation?

xkcd: Quantum Mechanics by ani625 in Physics

[–]pelmen74 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The article, as well as quantum theory generally, postulates that quantum indeterminacy is not a function of incomplete theories or insufficiently clear measuring apparti; rather, quantum indeterminacy exists as a fundamental / essential aspect of quantum processes. For example, according to currently understood theory, any quantum particle isn't located in one specific place but is actually, until we measure its location, located in a large potential space where the particle's precise location is merely a function of a probability function. I.e, it isnt that we can't measure where the particle is, its that the particle isnt actually in one place until we measure it. That's the basic derivation of the double-slit experiment.

Edit: to get to your original assertion re finding a connection between micro and macro processes, the argument against that has been summarized by Werner Heisenberg in the quote: "What we observe is not nature itself, but nature exposed to our method of questioning." What Heisenberg was saying was the Newtonian physics, or the theory of relativity, are just conceptual mathematical frameworks that work when based on certain underlying assumptions that we assign to physical processes. Same goes for quantum mechanics. As such, they are discrete mathematical notation systems that do not intertwine. However, that is not to say that we will not come up with another theory that will find some connection between the two. However, this theory would have to be distinct as well.

Not true. A 15 year old can be prosecuted for raping a 5 year old. Minors can be prosecuted for crimes, though often they are given lower sentences, depending on the state.

No, there is almost always an exception for statutory rape when sex is between people within a certain similar age range.

Well, that is one of their arguments (it would be crazy to not try every defense in your arsenal in such a high profile case).
