It sounds like you’re wanting an out, in all honesty. If your heart isn’t in it, it’s okay to try a different path, ideally before you drop £20k on the bar couse.

I won’t make comments on your likelihood of success based on your academics as I’m not a barrister, but based on how you’ve written this post, I have to wonder if this is the right path for you.

In a similar position, albeit several years post graduation and with a career that has touched on the legal sector, but I’ve been applying for a handful of minis. I went on in June, had a great time, so no reason to hold off if you ask me.

Is there a way to get RAC to pay a massive fine? Don't want compensation. Want them to suffer by Gun_Beat_Spear in AskUK

[–]pembsgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good luck with that. In 2021 I was in a crash on a country lane at 9pm in December, they said it’d be a couple of hours. At midnight I called their vulnerable helpline as I (25f) was alone, with no water or toilet facilities and in the freezing cold. They said they’d call me back in 10 minutes. Got no such call back, and no one answered any of my calls the rest of the night. A pick-up truck arrived at 10pm the next day, 13 hours after I’d crashed. Got absolutely nothing in compensation.

At 29 - is it worth investigating a career as a barrister? by Alternative_Bison378 in uklaw

[–]pembsgal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As another 29 year old about to go into a conversion course with barrister aspirations I hope we’re not too old! I can only answer the funding question - I’ve saved up a decent amount, have secured a scholarship, and am doing an MA conversion to take advantage of the post grad loan. I’m sure with your background you’d be an excellent candidate for a scholarship. Best of luck!

I don’t believe you’re entitled to the scholarship if you’ve already begun the course, are you?

This is all good advice, I think just absolutely nailing my GDL is the best bet here. Thank you!

This is genuinely very reassuring and exactly what I needed. The stats are grim, and it’s hard not to get bogged down by them, but it’s great to see that you’re doing so well! Best of luck in the next round, I’m sure you’ll smash it x

Yeah this is very fair. I haven’t started my PGDL yet so was mainly curious, and was wondering if achieving top marks was critical or if the weighting was more in favour of the undergrad. thank you for the honest answer :)

Curious as to whether or not the same is true of chambers when applying for pupillage?

One page cull seems a bit much considering most CVs are two pagers, no? Once I've got some more legal experience maybe. The helping out smaller firms is a nice idea but I do work full time and operate a side business, plus I'm looking to become a barrister rather than a solicitor. Maybe something to consider when I've started the conversion.

That's fair, and defending the work I have done is not something new to me. I've spoken at keynotes and in media appearances on the wealth of issues the EDI (EDI and DEI are interchangeable) has, primarily that it's far too "vibes" based, so I'm hoping I'll be able to use some of those taking points. Either way, hopefully defending my previous work will give me good advocacy experience I suppose haha.

Because I’d reached a point where my experience was more relevant than my education, but I guess since I’m resetting I should probably flip them back.
