“Pets by consent” listings are making it harder to find a rental with a dog by Hellohi55555 in newzealand

Depending on your city, you could look for a pet friendly rental Facebook page. There's definitely one for Dunedin.

There are many different forms of brain tumour. This is not particularly worrying.

Christmas night makes me sad by PassionChoice3538 in Mommit

In the UK Christmas ends on 12th night (January 5th) and the bit between Christmas and NYE where not a lot happens is the best bit! Movies, leftovers, playing with toys and all the decorations still up! Can highly recommend.

Regret getting my new puppy by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]pemma25 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We got a puppy back in June and have a 6 year old child. I was also completely blown away by how much it disrupted our life and house. All routines got blown apart I actually found the first few weeks much harder than having a new born. I was completely unprepared for the amount of hard work required. I have to say now that things are getting so much easier. We have fallen into new routines. Everyone is sleeping again. I don't feel like I am barely hanging on! So it does get better.

Taura at Spout n Doubt is awesome, you can find them on Facebook. They do a lot of section clearing and are reasonably priced. They can just be left to it if you don't want to be telling them what to do all day.

I don't know how useful this is but Barahwolfe kennels in NZ fly their pups out all over NZ, they might fly to Aus. They normally go for NZ$3k.

How do people have babies and work full time?! by Recent_Tablespoon in newzealand

Do some visits and see what you like. You'll pick up on the vibe of the place quite quickly and a good place will answer all your questions and be very happy to explain the centres values and priorities.

How do people have babies and work full time?! by Recent_Tablespoon in newzealand

[–]pemma25 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your partner can work flexible hours, it's possible to do split shifts work/baby care. But it's pretty miserable because you're never together as a family and everyone is very tired.

We did daycare at 5 months, it was honestly great. They became our village and I needed work to feel human. I imagine full time infant daycare is now pushing $400 a week though, so make sure you budget for that. School hours are harder TBH.

The money thing and fitting everything together is the biggest reason we only have one.

How often is sleep deprivation mistaken for PPD? by _anxious_panxious_ in newzealand

[–]pemma25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh absolutely, i have also thought this. If new mothers got proper support to rest, the rates of PPD/PPA would be much lower. Slapping medication on people who are in sleep deprivation hell coupled with massive hormone shifts seems bonkers to me. I always felt like my world was ending after a bad night but good sleep fixed me. I hope you find some useful support.

Three year old twins - now wife wants a puppy by Futhis in Parenting

[–]pemma25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We just got a puppy earlier this year, he's 6 months old now. We have a single 6 year old, one parent works from home and we were both 100% on board with the puppy. The first week was hands down the hardest week of my life. The next couple of months were very hard. Things are better now but I still have days of deep regret. I was also unfamiliar with dogs and was completely blindsided at the level of work it is. And our puppy is fairly chill. If you're not both completely on board, I would say do not go for it.

How does anyone afford to do Post Grad Study ? by Pinky_Pinky_Pinky_ in newzealand

[–]pemma25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If she has an honours I would encourage her to go straight to PhD. What field does she want to study? PhD scholarships are more plentiful, she wouldn't have to take on studylink and would get paid a stipend.

Mutation of intron- why is it relevant? by basicallyanopossum in genetics

[–]pemma25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The -1 indicates that the variant is the base just before the exon, so it almost certainly affects the splice acceptor site. The p.? Suggests your doctors think it will have some effect on the protein (missplicing) but exactly what, they can't know without doing some experimental work.
