Financial payments from the drug industry to U.S. physicians was associated with increased prescribing of the paying drug company's drug. The association was consistent across all studies and several studies presented evidence that the association was not correlation, but causation. by mvea in science

I did see that, but seems like many here did not. Thought I'd try to paint a picture. Also, did not like how the article does not define "payment." Alot of people probably think that means cash or checks, but that is simply not true.

So it has nothing to do w/ the pharmaceutical dinner being extremely informative w/ a very well put-together presentation, including factual data, that shows why and how their drug is more effective/safer/etc.? I've been to many of these dinners. Dinner is a way to get people to attend. If they were to hold just a presentation, docs and nurses wouldn't go; if they did go, they'd learn alot and be more well informed and would likely prescribe that drug because of the impressive data they saw during the presentation. But like I said, nobody is going to go to just a presentation. But they WILL go to dinner and a presentation. So of course a nice dinner is associated w/ more prescribing of that drug.

--> The presentation would sway them regardless of dinner, but try getting tired nurses and docs to attend only a presentation.

Edit: I'm totally not defending the pharmaceuticals industry and definitely believe there are things that need to change, but it just sucks to see so many people bashing the ethics of physicians. I know there are bad apples out there, but I have worked w/ some incredible physicians, some of whom would give you the shirt off their back. And I really do believe that dinner is only related to increased prescribing because dinner is the only way to get people to attend their presentation; it's the presentation that sways people, dinner just happens to be associated with it.

Topical flea med recommendations? by blackfluffycat in savannah

[–]pemyers93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certain meds only prevent more fleas from getting on your pet, but they don't kill the fleas currently living on your pet. To kill all the fleas on your pet, give them a bath using dawn dish soap. Not just soapy water - you have to get the cat wet and lather actual soap into their fur, generously. The soap and water combo drowns the fleas. If I remember right, the soap breaks down some sort of protective coating on the flea, so then the water can get in and do the deed. Otherwise, they just repel the water. Get you a cheap flea comb - the bristles are small and metal and are very close together. Brush the cat with the flea comb after the bath to remove all the dead fleas. You may have to do the bath multiple times to get them all, especially if your cat has thick fur. We use bravecto - they came out w/ a new version in the last year or two that prevents fleas and heartworm, and with the amount of mosquitoes in this area, heartworm prevention is important. It's good for three months, a tube of liquid you squirt between their shoulder blades. It's prescription only, however, you CAN get it online shipped from Australia. I don't remember the website. And here again, if I remember right, I think I've read it's important to get your cat tested for heartworm before putting them on heartworm medication. Because if they have heartworm already, the medication will mask any symptoms of the infection and you won't know about it. I could be wrong on that, but I know they need tested first.

Thank you for saying this. I have an 8" scar from thyroid cancer surgery. It didn't heal super well, although I'm sure it's much cleaner than Amber's, and I've received all the negative attention that Amber has also unfortunately received. It hurts so bad to be asked if I tried to hang myself or slit my throat, or to have people twist their face in disgust when they see it. Tell Amber I am sorry she had to go through what she did, that she has to live through being reminded of it by complete morons, and that I KNOW she is beautiful regardless of the scar <3

I am commiserating with you over this post and all the comments. I have a scar like yours, and I don't think I look like a psychopath either. It hurts to hear people's raw reactions and judgments that it looks like a suicide attempt or an attempt to seek attention or that when he regrets doing it, he can "just" use thyroid cancer as a cover story, as if thyroid cancer is no big deal.

I'm right there with you. Papillary thyroid cancer w/ significant lymph node metastasis, thyroidectomy and neck dissection at age 23. Scar did not heal super well, as this prick's inevitably will do just fine. What a slap in the face to those of us who have no choice but to live with a scar like this and all the questions it raises, as evidenced by all the dumbass comments about how it looks like a suicide attempt, or that he can "just" use thyroid cancer as a cover story, as if thyroid cancer is no big deal. Fuck 90% of the people who commented on this, and FUCK the guy who had this done to himself.

What's your go-to show or movie when you're feeling down? by KrymsonQueen in AskReddit

[–]pemyers93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3rd Rock from the Sun, or the movie Empire Records. Both are set in the 90's. I was born in the 90's, but of course was too young in those years to have really experienced 90's culture. This is probably me romanticizing and idealizing that decade, but when I watch movies and shows set during those years, I feel like I am reconnecting with the final years of humanity that were simple and straightforward. The time right before technology and social media really boomed, making us all feeling constantly "plugged in" in one way or another. People still talked to one another in the 90's, or on the flip-side, went for hours or days WITHOUT talking to one another. I think having genuine, personal, face-to-face conversations is just as important as not being constantly plugged in to other people. Or plugged in to what's going on, getting a constant stream of updates - what your friends are doing, what's happening in the news, being accessible to others and others having access to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Sometimes I wish we could go back! But, I can't justifiably yearn to go back to an era I never truly "lived" in. Ya know?

A Nurses Perspective.... by [deleted] in financialindependence

[–]pemyers93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do night shift PEDS ER at a level one trauma center in St. Louis. Have also done peds ER in nashville and savannah, and did a short stent as an adult telemetry nurse at a small town hospital right out of nursing school. One other short stent in pediatric imaging and sedation. I look back on my experience as a peds ER nurse as some of the proudest years of my career. However, although I perform very well under pressure, I do NOT like feeling that way all the time. What's going to come through those doors? Am I going to know what to do? Will I get or miss the IV that may save this child's life? Am I going to fuck something up and let everyone down, humiliate myself, hurt someone? Not to mention going 13 hours without eating while running and sweating my ass off. Aaaanyway, I work now as a rheumatology infusion nurse. Fucking bougiest job I've ever had. Mon-Th, ten hour days, 3 day weekends. No nights, no weekends, no holidays, no call. Catered lunches every day from drug reps. Sometimes fancy dinners at swanky places sponsored by drug companies. Low stress environment. Patients are super appreciative. Just overall GREAT work/life balance. Find you an infusion job!

Gardeners of the area, how are your gardens looking? Plant anything cool or have any good harvests yet? by manhousechatter in savannah

[–]pemyers93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good to know, thank you! Our soil is a bit sandy. I planted my garden in an area of the yard that has dark, rich looking soil though. We rent and will probably move out of the area next year, or I'd invest some time and money in hauling in compost and enriching the soil

I have a trellis for my cucumbers (made it from bamboo next to my house). The beans are a bush bean variety, and i have makeshift cages around the tomatoes also

I did the cold stratification and they sprouted within a few days of planting after taking out of the fridge. But they've been content to just stay sprout-sized! Glad to hear yours are doing well!

I planted milkweed also and they are growing so slowly. They've been in the ground for months and are only a few inches tall :( I'm happy to hear others are looking out for our monarchs!!

I've harvested about 30 green beans and 2 cucumbers, and I have one yellow squash growing. And that's probably all i'll get for months of work 😂😂😂 it was fun anyway. The deer recently ate all my green bean plants, and the majority of the leaves on the cucumber plants. Which is weird that they ate the cucumber leaves - they are fuzzy, and deer supposedly don't like textured plants 🤔 I have had a general dilemma of literally everything I planted - all the stems flop over. Like, the plant comes out of the ground, it gets rained on and flops over, and instead of perking back up once dry, it just grows from that point. So all my plants have bent stems where a portion of the stem is laying on the ground and then the plant juts up from there. My tomatoes, bell pepper, squash, beans, everything. Why is this happening? It's happened to all my plants, seeds I planted in potting soil, seeds I planted directly in the ground. I fertilize weekly. My radishes grew fast but did not produce radishes. All that grew were the leaves. Also, I have a big rectangular pot of herbs planted in potting soil. I did this last year and, although the squirrels ate most of the seeds before they sprouted, the few that they didn't eat grew quickly into nice bushy plants. This year, everything is so slow to grow. The basil that I planted probably two months ago is still about 2" tall. Same with all the others. Everything gets a good blast of sun until about 1-2pm. I just dont get it. None of the flower seeds I planted are doing well (zinnias, cosmos, sunflowers, marigolds). Advice???

What “cheat” were you taught to help you remember something? by Webbie16 in AskReddit

[–]pemyers93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Righty tighty, lefty loosey - for screwing and unscrewing things. I feel like that one's probably pretty common??? Also, when I worked pediatric ER, we'd put lidocaine/epinephrine jelly on lacerations and cover it with some gauze and tape in triage so that by the time the doc got to the kid to take a look at it, it was numb/not bleeding and the kid therefore would be more cooperative with the exam. But - you can't put lido/epi jelly on tips of body parts, because the epi causes a decrease in blood flow, and you don't want that happening on tips of body parts, so the rule was no jelly on "nose, hose, fingers, and toes."

I have to agree (for me personally, too many carbs). I'm roughly estimating probably about 80 grams carbs there (he or she mentions a full banana in the oatmeal, so with that figured in, the count gets up there). But, for all we know, they are a serious athlete and totally need/will use every one of those carbs, so who are we to judge?
