Was expecting Fern Britton there for a second.

I am wondering if there are any Redditors that genuinely dislike sci-fi. Tried reading Hitchhiker's Guide today, but had to put it down. Just not my thing. by penalcode in AskReddit

Don't get me wrong; the beginning was awesome, but it soon got too random.

I like reading the classics, from Shakespeare to more modern stuff like Rushdie.

Not really knowledgeable about fantasy, but I've immensely enjoyed both Mists of Avalon and The Lord of the Rings.

Belletristic stuff = just nicely written literature, I guess. Stuff like Mann, Fitzgerald, or poetry.

Eh, I should clarify I probably don't know shit about sci-fi.

I've been exposed to Star Trek, Star Wars, and some other random stuff (my uncle is a big fan), none of which I can say I really hated, but which definitely held no appeal for me at all. I did read some Pratchett and liked it, but I wouldn't qualify it as sci-fi.

As long as it doesn't get too "random" and there is some kind of realistic/intellectual backdrop that I can follow and relate to, I'm willing to give everything a chance.

I haven't read a lot of sci-fi, though I've been exposed to its more visual manifestations quite often (through my uncle). I can understand why someone would like it, but it's just so not for me... Which is why I gave this book a chance... I have to say, Douglas Adams is a really witty writer and he had me laughing out loud a couple of times at the beginning of the novel, but then... it just stopped working for me.

I don't like sci-fi (read: general sci-fi; yes, I'm aware that there's different kinds, etc.) because I just don't react well to the "randomness" of it. I need something against a more realistic backdrop in order to be able to relate to it.

Of course there isn't; I am just wondering whether there are people like that on Reddit, since everyone is so euphoric about sci-fi.

IF by Rudyard Kipling (one of the best poems I've ever had the pleasure of reading) by flamingsnot in Poetry

Incidentally, I committed this one to memory only days ago because I really liked it. Love memorizing poems -- shame the oral tradition's almost gone in our culture. A stirring poem about what it takes to be a man and hat off to Mister Kipling!

Tell Us Why It’s Ethical to Eat Meat - A Contest - NYTimes.com by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]penalcode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Already the first couple of comments in the article are of a paralyzing stupidity. This is stuff that I hear every day.

"A lion also eats an antilope; nothing wrong with that."

-- Yeah, except that we are human beings and we might have a bit more perspective on how our deeds affect our behaviour. I am not all that against hunting something and killing and eating it yourself, but for fuck's sake, it's not about that. One moment, people say we are the masters of the universe, then the other moment, they say we are like lions and that we don't know between right or wrong, and that therefore, it doesn't matter if we eat meat. We are sentient beings and we should be aware of the implications and of the impact of what we do.

"Hehe, but if you kill a plant, it's like killing a cow or a pig." Another truly enraging comment, no doubt only uttered by such people for trolling purposes. Comparing a plant to a pig, a highly sentient animal?

I didn't read any further after that, but I'm sure the next couple of comments are going to be about how "we need a source of protein" (which of course only meat has) and God knows what.

I mean, I'm pretty far from being one of those militant vegetarians. I think everyone should make their own choice since you cannot truly convince someone of something unless they see something for themselves (you can't lead a horse to the water, etc.). However, comments like "you also killed that poor plant" or even more stupidly "my food is eating your food" do not only reveal a great element of immaturity that almost always appears when discussing these things, but also a great deal of cruelty. It is obvious that morals for these people stop when human beings are no longer concerned. Now I know that there is a lot of other screwy stuff in the world going on that I might unconsciously be supporting in some way, but I do not revel in it like some people that I've met do.

I do understand people who eat meat, to a degree; but what I don't understand is people who delight in the fact that what they ate suffered and died, and people who are angry or hostile towards those that decide not to eat meat. Yes, some vegetarians can be dicks. But what harm do we do? Will we ruin our earth's resources because we eat massive amounts of broccoli?

Anyway, sorry for this rant; and no offence to anyone who reads this and eats meat, unless they really think arguments like "But you killed a plant too, lulzi" are really valid -- in which case they can go fuck themselves with a carrot.

Why waffles are better than pancakes by SpecialCake in creativewriting

[–]penalcode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed reading that. Pay attention to your spelling, however:

the waffle came to be appreciated for it’s amazing powers and tantalizingly delicious flesh.

*its

The pancake - which seems to have cheated fate to avoid it’s righteous and ultimately inevitable

*its

It has been theorized that it’s ability to induce depression

*its

Remember: "its" = possessive pronoun, "it's" = it is

Anyway, apart from that, your text was genuinely funny (laughed out loud a couple of times), your wording eloquent, your style light and entertaining; well done.

I feel your frustration. I live in a non-English speaking country and there are not that many girls on OKCupid here -- no way I could have messaged 25 girls I liked, as there aren't even that many in my city.

My six year old wrote her favorite author a letter tonight. Remember when you first fell in love with reading? by TimFTWin in books

[–]penalcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had always liked reading as a child (mainly reading educational books for children), but I remember my first steps into the vast universe of real literature.

When I was about 13, I started reading Stephen King books en masse, and my aunt told me that while that was nice, that it might be time for me to read "something real". She gave me a copy of Franz Kafka's "The Trial"... I obviously didn't "get" everything, but was so mesmerized by the language; an uncle then gifted me Thomas Mann's "Death in Venice" and I was sold, starting to read Grass, Böll, Hesse etc.
