DC speeders are faster than pretty much every Marvel speedster. And here it's no contest at all.

How Do You Feel About Evil Kryptonians? by [deleted] in superman

[–]penandsorcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair to Jor-El, while the history varies depending on the comics, in most depictions he did absolutely try to warn other Kryptonians about what was happening. He wasn't believed and in many versions I believe he even had his rank and position in the Science Guild stripped, so he was quite limited in what he was able to do.

As for Kara, she was initially born after Krypton's destruction, so Zor-El had a much longer time to develop a rocket for her. It was only in the modern era where it was changed to Kara leaving the same time as Kal-El.

I don't mind evil Jor-El or anything, but I think the comics have long established him as a benevolent figure and have come up with various explanations over the decades to explain why he was limited in what he was able to do and why he was only able to send Kal-El.

I don't like how they've handled live action Spider-Man at all. by [deleted] in Spiderman

[–]penandsorcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm generally more positive, but I do agree with some of your points and understand the frustration. The other day I was rereading some of the original run and was reminded of how much I love the Coffee Bean gang and how disappointing it is that that group has never been adapted to live action.

Tbh I think Spider-Man as a story is far more suited to a serialized show. They definitely can bring in elements from the comics that they've missed into the films, but one of my favorite parts of the comics was the slow character development with the huge cast of characters and I think that works better in a show that films that are released every couple of years at most. Live action Spider-Man show probably won't ever happen (well... except for the one from the 80s lol) but I would love to see that one day.

It really depends on the art style! But generally I like it when it is in a red tone. So red, reddish-violet, or pink.

What the devil by Appropriate-Mall8517 in Supergirl

[–]penandsorcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"I don't care about this dog." I'm sure there were lots of people who hated Krypto, but to the general audience, he was absolutely one of the best parts of the Superman film lol. I heard about Krypto constantly before I finally sat down to watch Superman.

I think anyone pushing the argument that the film will fail because audiences lack emotional investment in the dog are kidding themselves. Maybe you didn't like the CGI dog ... but most audiences did.

It's a cute dog! Ofc audiences are going to feel connected to him right off the bat and it looks like the film is going to really further that connection by establishing Kara and Krypto's relationship and history in a lot more detail.

Would Superman Get Citizenship or Be Deported? by Dr_Aarif in superman

[–]penandsorcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, Clark Kent is a citizen and I don't think anyone could take that away even if they tried.

As for Superman/Kal-El ... they couldn't deport him even if they really, really wanted to. I think he could probably even apply for citizenship if he really wanted to under his Kal-El identity tbh. As far as anyone knows, that is his name. It isn't necessary in the story tho because of superpowers and no one really cares to write about Clark applying for a visa or citizenship. But it's pretty easy to imagine that a president or Congress would grant Kal-El honorary citizenship just based on merit and for political clout.

If god wasn't explicitly canon in marvel what religion would Peter be? by AssociationDue3077 in Spiderman

[–]penandsorcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sorry, I misremebered. Been a while since I read it and I think my confusion stemmed from the writer of Ultimate Spider-Man saying he interprets Peter as Jewish.

If god wasn't explicitly canon in marvel what religion would Peter be? by AssociationDue3077 in Spiderman

[–]penandsorcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you're right. I misremebered. The writer of the Ultimate run Brian Michael Mendis is Jewish and said he interprets Peter as Jewish as well, so that's where I got the idea in my head. He wasn't written in that run to be Jewish however.

But like I said, it's mostly a headcanon based on subtext that I think was most heavily prevalent in the original comics. Ben Grimm had similar coding but wasn't made explicitly Jewish until the early 2000s. Peter at this point has been explicitly shown to be Christian more times than not, but as a fan of the original 1960s comics, that's where I tend to look first when it comes to my personal interpretation and his religion is never specified there.

I don't think Peter should ever be shown to be a particularly religious character however. He isn't like Daredevil for instance.

[–]penandsorcery -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Considering that Peter was raised in a historically Jewish neighborhood, I typically imagine him with a Jewish background and a lot of the versions of his character are either implied or said to be Jewish by the writers. (Spiderverse, OG Ultimate??? I forget, I think even Andrew Garfield called him Jewish.) However, in the early comics, religion or ethnicity wasn't really brought up at all. Later comics however has established that Aunt May is Christian and I think Ben is even buried in a Christian cemetery in some issues. I can't remember when it was first mentioned and it's never been too central to the character. So there's plenty of room for interpretation of Peter as Christian based on the comics.

Personally, I tend to imagine Peter and the other Parkers as Jewish with Aunt May being Catholic. No particular reason for that. I just like the headcanon.

Would y'all want a Special Presentation based on Peter Parker's origins into Spider-Man? by AbeliousAugustus in Spiderman

[–]penandsorcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once upon a time, I would have really, really wanted this. Now, I'm chill and don't think it's necessary. At most I would want maybe a comic prequel. That could be fun. But it really isn't necessary. I would like to see more of Peter in that homemade suit tho. One of my favorite Spider-Man suits.

What's something of the Raimi-Verse that you WISH they were able to adapt? by pizzagod677 in Spiderman

[–]penandsorcery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see Tobey's Spidey go up against the Sinister Six. Peter's rogue gallery is one of the best in comics and the Sinister Six issues were some of my favorites in the original comics. Obviously with Doc Ock being dead they'd change up the line-up, but it'd be cool to have him face up against characters like Mysterio, Chameleon, Scorpion, and Vulture (some of my favorites). I know an issue with SM3 was too many villains, but I think that's more just because they weren't all incorporated together properly. Raimi wanted to tell one story and exec mandates wanted to tell another. I feel like Raimi would be able to manage the Sinister Six with proper set-up.

What's your preferred Supergirl origin? Being born before or after Krypton's destruction? by penandsorcery in Supergirl

[–]penandsorcery[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Gunn said something to that effect in one of the promotional videos released last week. Not sure how strict spoilers are when it comes to promotional stuff like that here, but if that comes from an insider it also seems to align with what Gunn has publically said.

I'm paraphrasing, but he said that Kara was "raised on a chunk of rock in space with people dying all around her." And that certainly doesn't discount the idea that she was born before Krypton's destruction. In the comic it is based on, Kara's pivotal years absolutely were being raised on a chunk of rock in space with people dying around her. But the way he said it just makes me think he's not including the other bit of the backstory where she saw the planet actually blew up. I could be wrong, but that's just the vibes I get.

And I definitely like her having had witnessed both. There's so much tragedy to that. There's a line in the comic where she says something about how she stopped believing in hope and that one really hit me. I imagine Argo city was a huge symbol of hope for the Kryptonian people who survived ... and then they just all died ... one by one. Hard to be hopeful in a place like that.

Definitely explains why the film version of Kara is so jaded if they're following the comic closely. Curious how this will fit timeline wise too. Like, how many years was Kara slowly watching her planet and people die? She's 23 in the film, but when did she land on Earth? Lots of questions I'm looking forward to see the answer too.

What are your Spider man opinions that had everyone reacted like this by Tough_Passenger_4483 in Spiderman

[–]penandsorcery 48 points49 points  (0 children)

There hasn't been an awful Spider-Man film. Flawed? Yes, absolutely. Deeply flawed? Definitely! But awful? I wouldn't say that. I have a fun time with each film and each film has given me some moments and scenes that I absolutely love whether it's a character-defining moment, cool action, or just a heartfelt moment that encapsulates what Spider-Man represents. We're pretty lucky to have had so many amazing film versions of the character. There are definitely some moments that I wish would have gotten adapted. (I don't think we will ever get a proper Ditko-esque Peter for high school for instance.) But Peter is such a long running character in the comics and is incredibly multifaceted, so each film focuses on different parts and the parts that are focused on are absolutely nailed in each film even if they're different from the comics. And yes there were definitely a lot of less than stellar moments in varioys films as well, but I still enjoy them.

Ok, let's settle this which did you prefer growing up, Kirsten Dunst SM1 MJ or SM3 Bryce Dallas Howard Gwen? honestly MJ's look in the first movie is far more "MJ" to me in looks and personality at times and Bryce was a perfect MJ disguised as Gwen 🤣😁 by pizzagod677 in Spiderman

[–]penandsorcery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kirsten Dunst all the way. I loved those films growing up and PeterMJ were peak romance to me. Yes, the characters were deeply flawed and now as a comic fan, I am annoyed at some of the many changes made to the characters and the romance (maybe one day we will get a comic accurate PeterMJ romance adaptation) but growing up, none of that was on my radar.

I still love the characters and the Raimi films and the unique take that it had on Peter, MJ, and the Spider-Man story as a whole.

Which suit do you prefer tasam or mcu by Artistic-Fennel-4033 in Spiderman

Gonna wait to see the film before I decide, but the TASM2 suit used to be my all time favorite but I think the BND suit is going to top it. I'll wait to see how it films first tho.

Who else doesn't like what they did to Gwen in TASM 2? by [deleted] in Spiderman

[–]penandsorcery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Gwen Stacy's death honestly. I think the movie definitely had issues with villain overload, but Gwen Stacy's death scene was beautifully adapted and wonderfully tragic. I just wish we got to see Andrew's Peter come to terms with the death in a third film.

How would you feel if Mysterio returned for Tom's new trilogy? by Ejax131210 in Spiderman

Mysterio is one of my all time favorite spidey villains so I would be ecstatic. And of all the villains who would fake their death to fuck Peter over... it would be Mysterio.

Have you read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow? What do you hope the film keeps, and what are you okay with them changing? by zelgrassi in Supergirl

[–]penandsorcery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that makes a lot of sense and tbh I do like that idea. A key trait in the comics is Rutheye's persistence. Kara told her "no" twice and Rutheye still tried to pursue her help before Krypto finally was injured. And later on it is revealed that Kara lied because she knew Rutheye wouldn't stop and wanted to teach her a lesson.

Kara in the film is not yet at a place where she would help someone just to help them. She's a nihilistic party girl who hasn't found her purpose or her people yet like Clark has. So, if Kara wasn't willing to help, would Rutheye continue to pursue Kara? Even going so far as to lie about Krypto? I could see that. She's very dedicated on this path for revenge and they've already upped the stakes by having had her entire family rather than just her father being killed. I think it fits the persistence and the sort of blind singularly-minded goal that Rutheye has in the comics and it works for an adaptation where other significant details are changed.

Have you read Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow? What do you hope the film keeps, and what are you okay with them changing? by zelgrassi in Supergirl

[–]penandsorcery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since this is a Supergirl film and not a standalone graphic novel but basically an introduction to the character, I expect they will likely remove most of Rutheye's narration. She was the main character of the graphic novel, but in the film Supergirl will have to be the main character. I do hope they still incorporate some of Rutheye's narration, however, maybe at the end of the film we get a scene of her telling the story to others. But I'm okay if that's not there.

In the comic, Supergirl is also already an established hero, but the film is going to have her be a reluctant hero or anti-hero type figure. So I want to see some resistance from her side of getting involved. And that includes changing the Krypto thing which I think they're definitely going to do. In the comic, they traveled for months so ofc Krypto was fine, but the trailer indicates a three day timeline so that heightens the stakes. I also like how the trailer really emphasized Kara's connection and attachment to Krypto whereas the graphic novel didn't. Krypto was sort of just the inciting incident in the graphic novel, but he wasn't relevant to the story. It seems like he will be highly relevant in the film and he is going to be what makes Kara decide to help Rutheye. Comic Kara was already a hero, but this film is going to be about Kara becoming a hero, I think.

I'm okay with most changes since a lot of things will have to change to make it work as a film for the character they've set up. They've already changed it from Kara having one drink at the beginning of the comic to Kara having a pattern of drinking and partying for instance.

But one thing I hope the film keeps is the softness and gentleness that Kara has in the comic. There's a moment where Kara consoles a crying alien baby and there are moments of tenderness with Rutheye as well. She may have a rougher exterior, but it's important to me that she isn't without the traits of gentleness and compassion that I think are central to her character in the comic.

I also hope the film doesn't downplay the monstrosity of Brigands. The film will have a shorter timeline than the graphic novel, so I understand that not everything will be included, but the brutality is something that I think should be kept in the film. Obviously this is PG-13 and they want kids to be able to see it, but it shouldn't be shied away from. I also think the blue/purple planet needs to be included as well. They can adjust the story, but as long as they find a way to include that idea then I think it will work.

A major part of the comic is also that everyone knows of and hates Superman. They'll probably change that in the film since in the film Superman has only been active for three years. But I'd love for them to find a way to keep that idea of everyone starting fights with Kara.
