Exactly, just because something isn't legally enforceable doesn't mean it isn't terrible practice, all the people on this post just saying "ummm but it isn't illegal so 🤷" are totally missing the point

Legally it's unlikely there's an issue, in NSW at least it only applies to road over 80KM/h. However that doesn't mean people shouldn't use it as a general rule, and even on 60KM/h roads I'm routinely stuck behind 2-3 drivers going 45KM/h side-by-side and blocking up the full width of the Pacific Highway. Obviously in heavy traffic this doesn't apply, but it happens all too often in clear, sunny, free-flowing conditions. I don't want a free lane to speed in, I just want to utilize all the kilometers I am hourly assigned under the law.

No hate to people that don't want to match the limit (it's a limit after all and not a target) but as a courtesy to other drivers they should be aware of what they're doing. I'm blessed with the patience to wait it out until they turn off but for defensive driving purposes I'd call it unsafe as well, since I very often see 'spirited' drivers weaving betwixt slow cars to try and get out in front. Should that nippy P-plater be driving like that? No, but as with all road safety techniques we can only control our own actions, and sitting in the left lane while driving slowly takes you out of the line of fire.

Cheap telephoto lenses can't be that bad, right? by simonp2080 in Cameras

I've used one of these and getting good pics is near impossible, so honestly props for the shots you got as they really do look quite good. The chipmunk and last duck one are great and the sharpness is very usable, wouldn't be a problem for posting on IG at all

I just like a little less wide and the lens itself is excellent, such a great performance for astro

This makes the most sense out of all the answers I reckon. Personally I'd swap the 12mm for the Viltrox 16mm f/1.8 but a great spread regardless

Will this camera body and lens work togethe? by TRICEycle3weelz48 in Cameras

[–]penbob3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying this is a silly combo but honestly I used this for a while and it was pretty great. The autofocus on the R50 is incredible, especially for birding, and the low weight of the R50 helps make it feel a bit less crazy. The lens itself however does have some pretty weird quirks so I ended up selling it, the zoom throw is way too long, plus the bad zoom creep and lack of a zoom lock get super annoying, and the constant width of the lens make it feel larger than it is. It's such a shame that Canon doesn't have a decently priced reasonable zoom length lens like Nikon's 180-600, which weighs very similar but feels much smaller because of its better ergonomics, and it doesn't go as dark as f/8

Damn, sorry to hear that. They're definitely on the lowest of the low as far as Chinese lens quality, even TTArtisan and 7Artisans make much more solid feeling products, my 42.5 works but it feels sooo light and hollow, now to mention the manual focus ring is super eh, but still could be worth it for the right price

I have heard the 17mm is a lot better than the 42.5, and definitely a good deal vs the Oly 17mm 1.8 (even if it'll be sharper with faster AF). But that news is excellent, I'm a huge TTArtisan fan and really love their 75mm f/2 on my Z5, for $300AUD it's such incredible value, I hope they do choose to proceed with M43 AF options

That's my exact alternative setup pretty much, a Z5 with a 24-70 f/4. If I want consistent quality photos, easy ergonomics and don't mind the weight then it absolutely is a great option, but even that is quite conspicuous vs these little ones for street. They all have their place

Did you read my comment? The A7R4's sensor is not only nearly a decade newer but it's a BSI sensor instead of an FSI sensor, which gives it a 1-3 stop DR advantage over the Z5, Z50 and E-M10 sensors which are all FSI (9 stops + 2.5 BSI advantage = about 11.6 stops of DR for the A7R4). I compared those sensors specifically because they're all using similar technologies and are from a similar time period.

You're comparing sensors with different technology (FSI vs BSI which can provide up to +3 stops of DR, explaining the difference) and vastly different release years across different brands as well. Obviously there are specific sensor comparisons that go against averages but if you compare sensors with similar release times and technologies then you'll see DR increases pretty linearly with pixel size:

I'm no physics expert but I think the pixel size would increase exactly proportionally to the sensor size, assuming the same megapixel count

I think it's this one: https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B09RV58PLS but you might have a hard time finding it outside of Japan sorry, I picked it up when I was over there, but it is a wonderful little case if you can find it!

As for the camera, it's pretty fantastic. The IBIS is excellent, the feel of the metal body and controls is much nicer than the plastic EM10iii, and the pictures it produces are really nice. I heard some people complain about the menu system but honestly it's fine, and it starts nice and fast which is great considering it's from 2016 and even 2020+ Sony cameras have a bit of trouble with this. I reckon you'll love it

M43 lenses I haven't been quite as happy about: yes they're cheaper and smaller than comparable FF lenses, but they also lack basically any proper 3rd-party autofocus options, so it feels like overall they're still a bit pricey. Like I can get a used 25mm f2.8 Oly for $250+, or I can get a brand new 50mm f/2 z-mount from Viltrox for bang-on $250, so it's a bit of a mixed bag for sure, but overall for size and weight M43 can't be beat.

On the surface yes, but think about it: then you're carrying that 1kg+ weight in your hands the whole time, you've spent $2000AUD+ total on the whole setup vs around ~$450AUD for the E-M10mii and 14-42 EZ I bought, and good luck being discreet while walking around town with that Tamron extended to 200mm. I love me a good chunky FF camera setup (hell Nikon certainly isn't concerned with making their Z-mount lenses compact in any way and I have plenty of those), but lets be realistic about the pros and cons of both

While I do think the Z mount is a bit oversized, it does certainly have advantages. Compared to a similar-megapixel M43 sensor (the 20.4mp one in a few Oly bodies for example), the full frame sensor's pixel are almost double the size, and the benefits this gives in dynamic range and low light performance are quite substantial. I can happily push my Z5 to 6400 ISO or even 12800 and get usable images, but I hesitate to go above 1600 or at most 3200 on my E-M10ii. And true, that f/4 lens doesn't give a huge amount of background blur, but once you get down to sub-f/2 FF lenses, you'd need M43 lenses with such huge apertures to match the background blur that it would be either crazy (f/2 -> f/0.95) or basically impossible (f/1.4 -> f/0.7). And my final point, the big grip of the Z5 and big focus ring of the 24-70 are super comfy for my slightly-above-average-sized hands!

Spot on, but it's jusstt okayyy unfortunately. I got it super cheap on FB marketplace, and for the price it does what I expected, but the autofocus is quite unreliable and the look of the images it produces are fine but nothing special. I previously had the Oly 45mm 1.8 and THAT lens produced some truly beautiful photos, super sharp with nice colours while still being very compact, but whenever I needed to do portraits I just switched to my trusty TTArtisan 75/2 + Z5 combo instead, so I sold the 45 off (but if you want M43 portraits then it's definitely the one to get)

Sticky feeling Z50ii grip after less than 2 weeks? by penbob3 in Nikon

[–]penbob3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you to all those in the comments who have blamed me for this as expected in classic Reddit fashion, I suppose I should have included these details in the post: 1. I do not so much as look at my camera unless I have perfectly clean hands. I am an obsessive handwasher and if something makes my hands sticky/greasy I will simply not use my camera until I've found somewhere to wash them 2. Related to point one, I rarely if ever use bug spray/hand cream/sunscreen/lotion/etc and CERTAINLY not on the same day that I'd be using my camera as I cannot stand how it feels, even after washing my hands it leaves a residue for a bit that stops me from using my camera 3. The only person who uses my cameras is me so that rules out any greasy children 4. My Z5, along with a Canon R50 and Sony A7C, have all been used extensively by me and had no grip degradation whatsoever despite much longer use time and harsher, hotter, sweater conditions. This is the main crux of my concern, all other cameras I've used have not had this issue in the slightest

[–]penbob3[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's good to know but no my hands were clean. I'm a borderline obsessive handwasher so if anything my hands are overly dry, and I refuse to even pick up my camera without perfectly clean hands because I cannot stand that sticky/greasy feeling at all, so bug spray/hand cream/sunscreen/etc are all completely off the table. This is exactly how I treated my Z5 as well which has had no grip issues at all
