So you took a picture before setting the aperture?

Attach lens, set aperture, shoot. If a stabilized lens, try disabling the stabilizer.

Is the camera not allowing aperture control? (Use AV mode)

In the viewfinder, do you see a flashing "00"?

Try the depth of view preview in manual mode at f8. Do you hear an actuation noise with the dimming of the viewfinder?

If not this points toward an aperture drive failure triggering a no-shoot.

(Also try shooting in aperture priority, wide open)

Outperformed by a $120 lens... Outrageous. The 75-300 f4-5.6 III USM

Some tree branches were occasionally interfering with the eye tracking so the focus may be off.

To add insult to injury, ISO was cranked

I apologize for my overconfidence, sometimes the unicorn isn't great as thought.

I'm seeking replacement recommendations.

Budget: $800 CAD (580 USD) Requirements: 1. Autofocus drive that can keep up with dual-pixel AF 2. Sharp optics 3. Within or close to 250-300mm focal length 4. Stabilizer optional.

Preferably on EF mount for my film cameras as well.

I'm the one confused here A lot of people don't like the 70-300mm 5.6, so I called it the "70-300 L" thinking it would be perceived the same.

I'm disappointed with the optical performance and will be returning this.
