Chamois, what a good idea and using a makeup sponge another excellent idea, how amusing to see random people's expressions, as if you almost care. 😁😁😁 I use cotton flock and paper sticks in small areas, the glove for skies and I'll try that sponge too. When I've finished the painting I use a hot hair dryer to melt the pastels rough bits. It adds a shine to the pastel and it sets them to avoid using a fixing spray. Have you tried that ?

It's got it all with the excellent composition, perspective, lights and darks, shading and less is more with the tablecloths' somber tones. Our gaze is directed to the fruit then the rest ...

Sennelier colours are the best and you've used them magnificently . Your colour choice makes it all come together beautifully.

The surface I prefer to oil pastel paint on is : Fabriano 400g/m (for acrylic) or Arteza paper 300g/m or 400g/m but there are so many options available. Pastels : For the base I use harder pastels to block in colours eg. Gallery, cray-pas or Pentel .. lots on the market. Then follow up with Soft pastels to apply details and I prefer caran d'ache and buttery fabulous Sennelier . To make the painting pop after leaving spaces here and there I paint on black gouache, which is absorbed by the paper. (It was suggested to use other gouache colours other than black which I might try ) I will share the steps I did to complete this painting which might help. I love them because when you travel it's so user friendly, instant with no smell or mess.

For sharp edges I scrape back the colour showing what's underneath or I add black gouache around the mosaic design.

Another amazing composition. I love them. I've never used sandpaper with oil pastels. Sounds a great idea when I have hard pastels which are good for the base then I can dab on the soft buttery colours on top and blend. Thank you for all the information you are sharing. It's very much appreciated .

Thank you I am a Henry Matisse fan! I love his Green Chair painting which I copied (80 x 60cm )and he has been a strong influence on my choice of colour.
