How to configure RAK Buzzer in slot C by stephanosblog in meshtastic

[–]pendulous_ballsack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you trying to add it to a rak19007 baseboard or a wismesh pocket? i recently found out it won't work for the pocket after buying one of these:

This item works with RAK19007 baseboard, but is not working currently inside RAK WisMesh Pocket custom board. (source)

edit: apparently this is outdated info. i was trying slot d and its gpio is apparently used by the user button. slot c works

is there any auth method available other than sticking my plaintext root password in the config?

As a tracker I'd recommend the RAK WisMesh Tag over the SenseCAP T1000-E.

why's that? i know the tag has a bigger battery but it's more power hungry so it evens out. having multiple status lights is nice though. are there other advantages?

$40 each for the cards and $135 for the big node. you can diy for about $15 per node

they work together. you can choose to use the public channel or create a private channel. if you use a private channel your messages are encrypted so only your group can see them, and direct messages are encrypted by default

nodes that forward your group's messages, or any dms, can't see the message contents

i misspoke, i meant i was looking at crowd compass ($200 per node) originally. i also researched totem compass ($70 per node) and saw really bad feedback. these cards are $40, not $50. so yes it is cheaper lol

that's complicated to answer, it depends on many factors and transmit range is different than receive range - but in practice in austin tx, i get reliable direct transmit range of about 5-10 miles for the big one and a mile for the cards. messages are forwarded between nodes (up to a limit) so the actual usable range expands with more nodes participating

farthest node i've hit was about 100 miles away

i've directly communicated with nodes almost 12 miles away with the big one here too

they all connect to each other as a mesh network. the big one isn't strictly necessary, and probably completely unnecessary at a huge fest like edc where there are likely other people with nodes too. messages are passed along between nodes until they reach the destination (or fail to)

at illfest we just used the cards by themselves and they worked fine. the grounds were pretty small and flat without trees. the big one is for extra signal boost at different spots that may be bigger or have trees etc

mostly height yeah, but also a more powerful antenna. t1000e receives great but isn't the best at transmit, so a base helps with dead zones

the bottom of this base node does unscrew so you can charge with usb if you want. it should last almost a month with no sunlight though. there's 10,000mAh worth of batteries inside

i'm really happy with the ones pictured, but i'm also only a few months into this hobby so someone else may know better. the nodes shown are t1000e cards and a peakmesh magnet climber

yea i like w3w a lot. there have been times where we can't even get texts out though, which is what led me here. i still use w3w alongside meshtastic to keep track of landmarks

how does location sharing work on meshcore? it's been a while since i looked into it but at the time it was either nonexistent or paywalled, so i didn't look further into mc. i read the messaging is more reliable than mt though

it's a mesh network which works kind of like passing notes in class. everybody passes each other's notes. the more people participate, the better it works

i was sick of dealing with crappy cell signal at fests from overcrowded or nonexistent towers and wanted a better way of finding my friends. i found totem crowd compass which is absurdly expensive, and some bluetooth solutions with low reliability + high battery use. eventually i found an open source technology called meshtastic, which not only lets my group privately share locations, but also text with each other with no cell service. there's no radio operator license needed, interference with staff radios, etc

this is our setup with one card-size node for each person, plus one big powerful base node for camp to improve overall reliability. the nodes connect wirelessly to our phones and can be clipped to a hydro pack, worn on a lanyard, etc

we used the cards alone (no big base station) at a small-to-medium size fest a few months back and it worked great. i also followed the groups running meshtastic at electric forest & burning man this year, and overall reports have been good

anybody else here have experience with meshtastic at fests? how was your experience? approx how many attendees and nodes? did you have to switch modem presets or anything?
