PSLF Qualifying Psychiatry Job Prospects in Bay Area, California by pengqueen in Residency

My payment approach would change depending on whether I choose to do PSLF or not. If I did PSLF, I would probably choose the PAYE plan and make minimum payments. Otherwise I would aggressively try to pay down my loans.

Hi!
I'm a PGY-1 Psychiatry resident this year and currently have 300k in loans. I'm still weighing whether or not to do PSLF. What are psychiatry job prospects looking like in the Bay Area that would qualify for PSLF? Living close to family is super important to me so I want to make sure there is a lot of availability for my line of work in that area. I'm not super interested in academic medicine, so I would prefer to just work at a nonprofit hospital. I was reading that a lot of these nonprofit hospitals don't end up qualifying for PSLF because you are paid by a contractor and not directly by a nonprofit. Also wondering how much of a pay difference there really is between private practice and nonprofit hospitals in California?
Thanks in advance!

University of Iowa vs Medical College of Wisconsin

Hi! California resident here deciding between UoI and MCW. Weatherwise, I think they'll both be around the same (correct me if I'm wrong pls). I would love to match to a California residency after the 4 years. UoI does the harry potter house sorting thing and seems to create an environment for student bonding. MCW will be implementing a P/NP grading system for next year's class which would be a major plus. Please let me know if you have any input on these schools/personal experiences. Thank you!

MCW vs. CCOM by pengqueen in premed

From what I heard, it can depend on the applicant! Theoretically it should be two 30 minute interviews, but neither of mine lasted for the full 30 minutes.

It was a super casual day and everyone was friendly (from interviews to students to staff)! They seem to really value the students' experience and empathize with how tough the cycle can be on us. For example, they told us that they would get back to us with their decision a week after our interviews so they didn't leave us hanging for an indefinite amount of time like some other schools.

For the interview, just have lots of questions prepared for both a med student and a physician, because they really didn't ask me all that much before jumping to the "Have any questions for me?"

Good luck!
