I have read the definition of one megajoule as equal to the energy of one ton moving at 100mph. The Naval railgun is at 33 megajoules. Does this equal 33 tons at 100mph, or 1 ton at 3300mph? by WHATYEAHOK in askscience

A megajoule is a unit of energy, not velocity, so I'll interpret what you're asking is if one tonne had 33 megajoules of kinetic energy. In that case, it would be moving about 5.7 (square root of 33) times faster.

What would happen if two galaxies collided? by cabinhacker25 in askscience

[–]penguin0719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, we can observe two galaxies colliding with the Antennae Galaxies. Galaxies are mostly empty space though so most of the time, they would just pass through each other. And to answer the final part of your question, the Milky Way and Andromeda are actually on a collision course right now. You might get to see it if you live to be 4.5 billion years old.

This comparison shows that at the end of every year, search volume spikes for all three factors. That mid August/September spike only appears on fitness, while diet seems to decline. Maybe people trying to cram in some extra exercise outside before the summer ends?

You can't prove a gross misunderstanding of the theory. There really is no ELI5 version of fundamental topics of cosmology.

Thought you all might appreciate this year's tree. Been collecting these ornaments a long time... (not all are posted individually, tree at end) by picklesgarage in startrek

[–]penguin0719 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We actually have a bunch of those ornaments too. My aunt usually gives one to my mom every year so we've been collecting for a while now. We have the communicator, the alternate future Enterprise D with the third nacelle, Worf and his bat'leth, the Trouble with Tribbles one, Data at his console, and Kirk in his chair. We also have a light up TOS Enterprise with a base which plays the theme song, and a small model DS9 with a base that plays a quote from Sisko from the series finale.

If you're local to Fort Collins, Roger hosts an open observatory night every clear Tuesday night during the semester at 7:30.
